Spent a week in Las Vegas, everything great, spent a week in LA, everything great, first night in Frisco went to Jack's Bar, Lousy, The staff could not have been less bothered, the huge lounge room was empty and only a dozen people sat at the bar, the staff were totally disinterested, discourteous and just plain pig ignorant, they don't deserve the time of day let alone my hard earned cash.

Just stepped in with my friends during the visit of Fisherman's Wharf, it was Fleet Week, so a bunch of young sailors occupied the bar.
The staff was very friendly, and with 68 beers on tap, you have the choice! As we are from Germany, we recognized "Paulander Hefeweizen", which should be written "Paulaner". Besides a pitcher of regular Coors, some tried the Hefeweizen, which was a bad idea. This one had nothing in common with a Paulaner Hefeweizen. Hard to get a real Hefeweizen in the USA!
But they had plenty of good beers, and the steaks were excellent, too. A nice interior, fantastic location, good atmosphere. Go in, you won't regret it! Prost!

If you realize you are in a tourist area and are just stopping by to have a special beer you like-its fine. For me there is a sentimental attachtment when my son and i stumbled in one afternoon years ago when he first moved to the city and told the barmaid we were thirsty and wanted something on the light side but tasty, she rec'ed El Toro Poppy Jasper Amber Ale and since then anytime i am in town i try and stop by and have a glass. Never eaten there but gotten into a few worthwhile conversations despite the tourist crowd (including me) which jams the place. Dan

Jack's is located near the Fisherman's Wharf area so there's lots of tourists. Consequently, about 6 taps cater to Budsuckers while the rest dispense decent brews.
Prices are between $4.50 and $5.50 per pint which is pretty steep. Some like Chimay are more expensive as one would expect. The place is very busy but I found staff to be helpful and polite. They made recommendations which were on the money and they seemed to know their beers. The glasses I was served weren't chilled though some of the beers were a wee bit cold. Talk to your neighbor for 15 minutes while it warms to the correct temperature. I didn't see a menu but they had oysters on the half shell for $1.25 each which were cold, fresh and delicious. They actually have 68 taps, with a sign on one side of the building listing the correct number while one on the other side lists 85. It's a typical tourist spot in atmosphere but worthy of a visit for the beers.

Sorry - submitted this review for Jack's Bar's before I realized I reviewed the wrong place. Oh well, here's what I said:
Stopped in here by accident to use the restroom while in the Fisherman's Wharf area and sure am glad I did. This place has great character, great waitstaff and great beer selection - and being in on of the most touristy-areas of the city. Each time we went to Fisherman's Wharf we were sure to stop in, even if only for one pint (it's awfully hard to have just one here).

I've been to Jack's 3-4 times on my occasional trips to SF. This place strikes me as much novelty as it is anything else.
First, they promote 85 beers on tap, but I only counted 68 (11 of which are form the Big 3 domestic companies) -- and I checked all of the taps throughout the place.
They do have a range of styles. Most of the micro/craft brews are from the west coast. So those traveling from other parts of the country have an opportunity to explore.
The imports are weak. They occasionally have some Belgians on tap (Stella & Chimay Cinq Cent seem to be regulars), but they don't offer them in their proper glass styles. And they ice/chill their glasses -- not the sign of a serious beer place.
As for the ever present Jack, I met him once. I tried to talk to him about his import selection, but he seemed indifferent, answering with grunts or short responses.
All of this leads me to question whether there is truly a love for the beer or are the myriad taps more a novelty/gimmick for the tourists?

Yes, this place has many, many taps. That's the good part. The bartenders are very unhelpful and spent more time at the end of the bar talking. No samplers, so you don't know what the beer you order will be like. Is there anything wrong with pouring a little bit of a beer to taste it first? That is not uncommon at most places. So we stuck with a California beer we are familiar with. That way, we couldn't go wrong. Great musician playing at the entrance, so that was a treat. But the visit overall was "eh."

85 beers on tap! A bit pricey at $5 a pint but it's in a tourist area. Helpful staff.

Great bar, friendly service. Stopped here while on vacation and went back several times. My wife and I met several interesting people, 86 taps to boot!

We were there a couple of months ago and met Ona, a wonderful bartender, and Jack. Jack was so nice and we enjoyed hanging out there. We played music, ate oysters and just loved it all. Can't wait to go back.

One of the very first "Mega-Tap" pubs, one should hunt this place down, for nothing other reason than to see all 100 tap-handles. As you might expect, some are not a fresh as they could be, but that's a small price to pay for such a selection...//TSB

Fantastic selection and prices aren't bad. They're starting to get in the holiday beers. Service was so-so on a recent Saturday evening.

Large micro-filled selection mostly on tap. Friendly & knowledgeable staff. Typical snacky bar food was good. Dark interior, with big comfy chairs. June 15, 1998.

Excellent selection of tap beers. Very good live music. Service was very good especially considering the number of beers customers have to choose from. Staff was very friendly.
