I visited this brewpub on 5/3/08 and had the following brews; Gray Whale Pale Ale 5.0%, Mariners Mild 3.8%, Old Oakland Ale 8.0%, Blue Whale Amber Ale 7.0%, Luck 'O the Irish Stout 4.5%, Leviathan Imperial Stout 10.0%, Mariners Mild Cask, & Columbus IPA 7.0%. This brewpub was my first stop after picking up a rental car from the airport. We had lunch and brews on the patio. What a great first stop for a tour of the Bay Area. We visited 17 brewpubs in 5 days and this one was definitely in the top 5. It just may become a permanent stop for me after flying in to Oakland.

Late afternoon visit on a Monday and had the bar almost to myself. they have 8 beers to taste on the sampler tray, no "fuzzy yellow beers" here. All are dark in color and very flavorful. For a change I really enjoyed an Amber the Blue Whale Ale, nice hop finish, not to overpowering. The sampler of eight went for $11.00. Great old building with some beautiful stained glass in the bar. Small kitchen, so all meals are prepared with lots of T.L.C. Hey Jay from Silver Spring, MD.(previous reviewer) How did you find a brewpub in Oakland, "while walking around San Fran on vacation"

We encountered this place while walking around San Fran on vacation, and were glad we did. Comfortable, dark, and unremarkable inside. Pleasant service . We had the beer sampler with an appetizer, and all was quite good. Our visit was on a slow afternoon (October 2005). The highlight of this visit: the waitress introduced us to our first taste of Pyramid's Apricot Hefe, on tap, which we fell in love with. It has a strong apricot essence, yet was still crisp and beery. (As you can see, I'm still workin' on the correct beer lingo. At a later stop, we tried Widmer's brand, which had no discernible apricot flavor, nor did we like it as "just a beer".)

Nice establishment snuggled in between Old Oakland and the Civic Center area. They were pouring 7 of the house brews to go along with more than double that of guest beers and ciders. Had a pint each of the Elephant Seal Bitter, Blue Whale Ale and the Leviathan Imperial Stout. The Elephant Seal tasted a bit old but it grew on me. The Blue Whale was great. The Stout was,by far, the best of the trio. Ordered a turkey burger from the lengthy menu. Even though they warn you on the menu that the kitchen is small so don't expect your food to pop right out, my meal showed up quickly. Enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. Seems conducive to striking up casual coversations with fellow patrons. And if idle chit-chat isn't your thing, the place is Wi-Fi friendly.

I used to frequent this establishment back in the early 90's when they were winning awards. Unfortunately, either my palate has become more sophisticated or their beers have slipped. The only thing I was impressed by was the Russian Imperial Stout. And it was a fine thing. But it always sad when memories of past greatness are not matched by current reality. The pub is still has a great atmosphere (though parking has always been a thorn).

They had a great selection of beers, and all were quite good. Service was great as with the food. One thing to know, their kitchen is TINY, like the size of a closet, so food takes a long time and they frequently run out of things.

This brewpub is a long time survivor. The beer is first rate and there is a good selection: A couple of pale ales, and IPA (both regular & cask) a stout and a barley wine. The food is good, too. Try the crab stuffed mushrooms. The staff is quite friendly and accomodating and they clearly (a) enjoy being there, and (b) want you to enjoy your visit, too!
Although a bit hard to find, this Oakland gem is worth a visit. It is in downtown Oakland and consequently does a good 'happy hour' business, but it is quiet on weekends. There was a jazz combo playing tonight and it is a shame that there were not more folks visiting.

I must say I was a little bit disappointed by the quality of the house ales available, but I think that may be because my expectations were too high. I sampled the Gray Whale Pale ale and was hoping for something with a little more hops. However, the guest beer selection was top-shelf so I opted for the Stone Old Guardian Barleywine as a nightcap...nice choice..wow. Our server, Lauren, was full of pride, poise and a commitment to excellence so we really had a great time. I would definitely stop by next time I'm in Oakland.

I visit this place every few years and it has definitely gone downhill. The best (PCB) beer was the huge stout, which was quite tasty. I’d go here for this beer. My second favorite beer was the Blue Whale (cask), which is a nicely hopped red. They have attempted two Belgian beers, a tripple and the Grey Whale brewed with Belgian yeast. Stay away from these beers! They are truly awful and I LOVE true Belgian beers. The most disappointing thing about this bar was the food. I had a hot turkey plate which was tasteless. My wife had a crab-topped salad, which more resembled a tuna fish covered salad. If you need to eat here, order the quesadillas, they were pretty good. Aside from the PCB beers, they had a few micros that were really good. Don’t get your hopes up when you see the great beer menu, as they don’t have THOSE beers. I am still craving the AVBC tripple…

I'm not a huge amber ale fan, but once I tasted the Blue Whale Ale, it's all I have at this place. Big, with plenty of malt flavor and hop bitterness. I need to experiment more with their selection but haven't been able to pull myself away from the Blue Whale! Huge lineup of guest beers. Food is just OK. A little too "neuveau" for my taste. Others here have complained about the service, but I find it to be good. Bartender may be a little standoffish, but once you get him talking, he's a goog guy. The brewmaster was quick to answer my e-mailed questions as well. Pacific Coast gets a big thumbs-up from me.

Fine establishment in all areas except service. I watched over 20 people leave when they couldn't get food service. After asking 3 people, I finally got someone to take my order after 30 minutes. Good beer, good food, but the absolute worst service I've ever had at a pub.

Leviathan Stout stands out because it masterfully hides 10% alcohol behind a rich, sweet (but not too sweet), beautiful taste. Killer Whale Stout was also full-bodied beer with sweetness that was surprisingly non-chocolatey (odd for stouts) but I thought it worked excellently. Blue Whale is pretty good with subtle hops and a strong taste (although I guess I'm not as excited about it as everyone else who posted here). Code Blue is a nice cask conditioned ale that is a little hoppy. Old Oakland is just OK but does have an interesting celery-like taste to it. Grey Whale Ale and Leslie's Pale Ale are both too bland. The Bangers and Mashers tasted good to me but I'm no expert on English grub. Atmospherewise, this is one of my very favorite pubs: cool bar! It's 2 blocks from a BART station so no need to drive. Basically I love the stout and the atmosphere and that's why I go to this place when I can.

Brewery is situated in a more newly renovated part of the city (walking distance from China Town...ie...great restaurants), but still maintains a nice older pub feel/look. Big-ups to the for the great older wooden bar with inlaid stained glass and the 50's style neon clock. They also have an outside deck, but we stayed inside to get some serious beer tasting done:
Gray Whale*****(strange start, mellows out, then comes back to bite you), Columbus IPA***(more pungent than bitter tastes, but stil a pleasure for any hop-head), Blue Whale Amber***** (sweet and hoppy...matter of fact it tastes more like an IPA than their standard IPA???), Killer Whale Stout*** (eh...okay, but not as sweet as most stouts), Leviathon Imperial Stout**** (a great big beer...almost syrupy but oh so good).
The sampler was a little pricey ($8.25 for 6 beers)...but was well worth it as they came in larger than normal glasses (maybe 1/3 pint?). Service was less than desirable...here's a hint, if you work in a social place, you have to be SOCIAL!!! But I guess if you have great beer, you can act anyway you want to!!!

As others have noted, the beer selection is good, the Blue Whale being of particularly good flavour. The food quality is a bit erratic and - notwithstanding Weasel's opinion - not very British. The curry special was bland, shepherd's pie does NOT have melted cheese on it in Britain nor do we serve fajitas back home!!

The beer was an experience all to itself. My favorite is the Luck o' the Irish Stout. The service seems indifferent and unfriendly at times, but the beer and ambience more than make up for that. HIGHLY recommended. Not necessarily a place to bring the whole family, but a great place for adults to kick back and relax.

I love the beer at Pacific Coast and try to stop everytime I'm in the area. The IPA is awesome! However, our bartender was pretty weak and his service wasn't much better. We ordered a pizza with sausage and they brought it out with canadian bacon instead. His response was "Oh, they are out of sausage." Thanks for letting us know. I will definately go back for the beer though!

Stopped in on Sunday for a quick bite and to sample the beers. We shared a Ploughman's platter, sausage, brie, cheddar and sliced apple. Perfect accompanyment for the beer sampler. The beers were a real treat. Full bodied, flavorful and varied. Perfect brepub ambience and good service. I'd highly recommend stopping when you're in the area. I know I'll be back.

Wonderful Place To Visit!I liked every beerthey had. In order, I liked first of all, the Killer Whale Stout, the Imperial Stout, the Emerald Bay (Special), the Grey Whale Pale Ale, the Old Oakland Burton Ale, the Cask Ale and then the Strong Blue Whale Amber Ale. Wonderful place, Wonderful food. They even had a dart board we could play on for a while.

Pacific Coast is a great brewpub. I always make it a part of my visits to the Bay Area. It is very easy to get to by BART, only about two blocks from the 12th Street/Oakland City Center station. This trip I was lucky enough to get the Leviathan Imperial Stout and the Old Oakland Ale. The Old Oakland was particularly good, big and well balanced. As always, the Blue Whale was outstanding. Though I didn't try any of the guest beers this time, I appreciate that they have a number of local beers, including Bear Republic and Lagunitas available. For lunch, the French Dip was a great match with the big beers. Wish that I could get back more often.

Was at the PCBC on 5/3; in all respects, it was a rich experience in terms of both the beer and the food. Really liked the Blue Whale Pale and they featured a real hoppy brew from a brewer in Pleasanton, whose name I'm unable to recall. Strongly recommended!

Simply put, this is the finest brewpub in the Bay Area! Know where you are going, because its location is not real obvious - were it not for a very friendly Oaklandite (?) we would have been lost.
