Visited River City BC this past Friday evening. Plenty of seats available at the bar, in the dining room and out on the patio which isn't a good indicator. They had seven beers on tap and a hand-pumped Brown Ale to go along with a full bar. Went thru a pint each of the Belgian White, Brown Ale and the Stout. The White is the only one I'd recommend. Their Stout was probably the weakest I've ever tasted. The food menu is a little high-end but I had a really good BBQ Chicken pizza. The bartender was friendly and informative but the barback/busboy was continually trying to refine his wine bottle flip-and-catch routine. Didn't seem to bother the floor manager but it got on my nerves real quick. If you find yourself stuck in the Downtown Plaza Mall, River City BC would be a good pit stop. When you get to the other end of the mall you can hit the Hard Rock Cafe. If great beer is on your shopping list, there are better brewpubs in the area.

I have been coming to this place over the last 10 years or so. It has become TIRED. Let me start with service: what service? It was nearly non-existent. We were seated immediately, then it took 10 minutes for waitress to get our drink orders. Beer, that was all. It took another 10 minutes for her to tell us my choice was out, I picked another, and waited nearly another 10 to get that. Added up: 30 minutes to get a beer. She finally took our food orders when we got the beer. Never asked if we wanted another. RiverCity lost a chance to sell more beer as we could have easily drank our first by the time the food arrived, IF we were promptly served upon our arrival. She gave us excuses about being slammed and one table taking all her time, but there were not very many people there and no large groups. Whatever. The food has started to become plain, and it has been the same for years. Time to shake it up! Overall, I won't take any out of town guests to this place and the only reason I was there was to shop nearby. Excellent location but wasted.

We had an enjoyable time at River City, the food was different than a normal brew pub, but to me that was nice for someone who doesn't want a burger in a basket with a microbrewed beer. The bartenders were extremely helpful when selecting our beers and when we sat down for dinner our server was really nice and kept checking in with us. The beers seemed to have the same taste though.

The beer and food were just fine, probably even a notch above traditional pub food. But the service was so bad I have vowed to never return to this establishment. Even if they were giving beer away I couldn't stand to be served by their servers.

The beers were excellent. The food was good but a bit pricey. The only, repeat only, thing that would keep me from coming back was the substandard service. Our server was terrible and complained that her tip wasn't big enough.

Their Oatmeal Stout is one of the smoothest stouts I've had. The menu has a good selection of pizza, salads and standard pub fare. Unfortunately the jambalaya was soooo hot you couldn't taste the flavors. The foods a bit pricey for Sacramento, but the portions are big enough for leftovers.

Love it! As Sacramento residents we have enjoyed RCB on a weekly basis. Now that we are in Half Moon Bay it's always on our list of places to go when visiting Sacramento. Wish we had one in our town!

Most of the beers were undistinguished but the Belgian Abbey ale was outstanding and the Stout was quite good. We had a very friendly and attentive waiter even though we were there over a busy lunch hour.

I tried a sampler to get a feel for the beers. IMHO...none of the beers stood out. They are kind of bland. The best of the lot was the stout which was a decent offering.

Weird menu changes during day/afternoon/evening. Outside tables sometimes have no service. Waitpersons are often too busy (or inexperienced) to do a decent job. Menu print too small/condensed for easy reading.
Still, not too bad.

Food is very much NOT pub grub, and slightly on the high side. Beers are generally very good, although selection can vary from season to season. Vienna is a very good and Hefe is outstanding, when they have it.

This is a nice location, in an upscale downtown retail plaza. Food was great and bartender Ryan was knowledgable of the local beer scene. Varieties included kolsch, hefeweizen, pils, pale and porter. The kolsch was good; light and crisp and true to style. The pale ale was in the British style and had a good amber color, a hop bite but without the aroma and smoothness of the style. Pils was good. This part of California has some very good brewpubs. River City is certainly in the top third.

THe food is too yuppie to be enjoyable. The bar staff think they are doing you a favour. I heard one snap at a customer that they dont have Heferweizen then not offer an alternative, left the guy, and me cold.
Beer selection is fair, quality is fine when you get served. I also dont like the way they use plastic glasses when they thing they have a gig in town.

Ironically, for a pub that specializes in the German style, it's only the ales that stand out in my book. Very good stout, and a tasty Pale Ale. Atmosphere is trendy, but that's not unussual considering it's in the middle of an up-scale shopping mall...//TSB

Beer is greatly improved since a couple of years ago. No longer the colored water, mall-beer we used to laugh at. If you haven't been there for awhile, give them a try.

Try the porter on the beer engine! Perfect. The hefeweizen was good and fruity, but lacked that clove bite the would've made it great. The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired, but the beer makes up for it.

Beer was a non-event. The stout was dark but flat and not very tasty, the ales basic. What can you say - a mall pub!!!

If I could combine the atmosphere of Hogshead with River City's beer, this cowboy would be right at home. Since I can't abide bad beer, however, I will put up with the upscale ambience of River City.

It is a very busy place. I found the brews excellent! Also, their service and food rate up there with their brew. They have plenty of room inside as well as open air in the middle of the mall. I look forward to going there again. They rate up there with the best of them!!

When it's summer and they have the Hefe on tap, there is simply none better! It's a true Berlinner style Hefe! Incredibly floral, rich. The food is top shelf. Location? Eh, it's a mall, oh well.

This is a great restaurant. The beers are mostly lagers, rather than the ales found in most brewpubs. Because of the downtown mall location, the ability to just hang out and drink beer is limited, so the ambience is different from many pubs. Go for the great food and a decent beer.
