I would recommend visiting this place for the atmosphere above all. The staff (Linsel and Megan) were very friendly, witty, and helpful. I found the customers (namely Jason and Derek) were just as friendly to converse with while sitting at the bar. I tried a couple of beers produced at Tugboat, although they offer brews from other great establishments as well. The Hop Red was tasty but was rather thin in body. Some other of their own beers on tap were the Hop Gold, amber, porter, and Chernobyl Stout. Beware: check for business hours as this place is generally only open during evenings. 06/13/09

This place has a really cool vibe. almost like a dark and dank basement or old mans reading room.
It is not so clean but the feel is just great.
The barkeeper was great and gave me a taste of several beers. Their Chernobyl Stout was tasty and 14% alcohol. The Golden Hop Ale was a crisp hoppy beer with an almost homebrewed flavor. It was very good.
I tasted the brown, amber and T-bolt also. Each of these beers were noticeably infected so I left after the second pint. I did not eat but the food I saw actually looked good.
Nice place but somewhat hit or miss on the beers.

Great little place right around the corner from The Benson. They have very strong flavored beers here. Always willing to let you try a taste before ordering. I really enjoyed the over hopped IPA, it was very much to my liking.

Tugboat is an experience not to be missed in Portland. A down to earth place which encompasses the essence of the Northwest. The bartender Sean selected a great beer for me based on what I told him about my taste. On my second visit there I met the owner Terry and his friends and we conversed on so many different topics. Its a small place where you dont get lost in the crowds but you dont feel crowded either. 5 min walk from Pioneer Sq MAX stop. Terry

How can I give a place with so-so beer a good overall? Well, I'm willing to give it another chance because I think it would be a really cool place to hang out, I love the space, the clientele, and the bartenders. But I also love beer, and there was a major problem here. Maybe the beer was infected, but I really think it was the pint glasses. They had an aroma that was, ah, shall I say, "funky?" It spoiled whatever the beer may have tasted like. Seriously, I almost didn't finish my pint because I was worried I might catch something. The only thing I could figure was that the dishwasher wasn't working right, was low on sanitizer, or something. So I'm going with good because, looking at the other reviews, something must have been wrong that night. I'll try again and report back, and it is definitely worth checking to form your own opinion. Be warned though--cigarette smoke can be an issue here, which also is hard on the beer palate.

First father/daughter barkeep combo Ive ever had the pleasure of being served by.
Went to 13 brewpubs/breweries in one week 4/29-5/6, so I cannot write too much for each one, but "Beervanna" is the appropriate name for Portland. Every BP, beerbar we went to was top notch and friendly with great to awesome beers and service with few exception- the ones filled with smoke. But overall, compared to east coast, Portland is THE place for real beer lovers to spend at least a week. And we only did 2 McMenamins. Fly to Portland, grab an offcial beer map, hop on public transit (every BP was on a bus/tram/train line or a short walk) and have a beer blast!

Tugboat,located in a street that seems like an afterthought (or an alley) is a very small (3 barrel capacity) brewpub offering a half-dozen house beers (I tasted their Pale Ale, ESB and Porter) and a good selection of guest taps, including Frankenheim Alt. In addition, they offer a decent tex-mex menu, the food looked to be freshly made on premises. A popular, friendly place for locals and visitors, Tugboat is one of those comfortable places that are without any semblance of pretention; only very cheap beer and food (Cash Only.)

Not the best, not the worst. I'd say the place is okay. I like the surroundings and the atmosphere. They have good bands playing and it's a romantic place but the beer just isn't outstanding.

A very unusual brewpub, but a nice place to spend a quiet evening listening to Jazz, or playing scrabble!! Nice beer though when I was in half the pumps were down. Good service and palatable food.

Very cool joint downtown. Live jazz all the time at night. Very tasty IPA and stouts. Wild selection of historic books to look at all around. Big windows to the alley like street outside. Very hip bartender in charge serving up a few samples of simple Mexican food and such if you get hungry. Yea, keep this one on the crawl route and it'll be a success.

These fascinating folks who own/operate this oasis most likely don't want this type of praise, as us beer geeks can be rather a shallow bunch, but wow... talk about the American dream. While many of us paw our score cards and pencils, they are engrossed in doing what most of us geeks would give out left arm to do. A real micr0-brewery, family ran, with live original jazz music 5 nights a week?! And dogs are allowed?!!! Unreal. No televisions here, only the important things in life. Conversation, art, friendliness, great ale, vegetarian food, banter, laughter... and did I mention hoppy hoppy beer? Sorry to get so excited. It's just a great great find. They don't advertise, so the folks you meet here are not the lemmings that show up at some of the other places. Hope they start a place here in Austin. Hope somebody like John and Mehgan opens up a place here in Austin.

I wish I could have stayed here longer. All the books and the great beer. I should have started my pub crawl that day at Tugboat--rather than eneded it. The IPA was all I had and it was good. If I can ever get back to Portland I will defianly spend more time here.

Difficult to find, but the Chernobyl Stout was worth the effort. A funky place, not anything like your ordinary yuppy brewpub.

the tap selection was pretty good with some of their own as well as a few guest taps. the owner was very nice and let us sample a bit before ordering. only drawback of the place was the food portions were small and and they don't take plastic. kind of a hole in the wall place but i woould definatly go back.

Excellent Atmosphere, came here after getting off an Amtrak train, very friendly service small and excellent quotes in the bathroom. Rye Ale was incredible adding it to my top ten list. My only complaint was the smokiness, seems like everyone was smoking in there, how can people taste what they're drinking while sucking smoke across their tongues?? I guess they put up with enough non-smoking establishments, they need a good one of their own everyonce in awhile, but it think it'd be easier and cheaper to just inject themselves with nicotine and not bother with all that tobacco and the such. Anyhow I'll still come back.

I came across this place quite by accident, two years ago while visiting my sister in Portland Or. All I can say is WOWzerz. Nothing like it. Not too many white sneaker and polo shirt types frequent here (thank god). Live music, dogs, ale galore, in the most unique setting I've ever seen. Hay I'm from Idaho though, so take that into consideration.

Still angry about the treatment I was subjected to at the Tugboat. I was a little drunk and probably a little mouthy, but that was no reason for two regulars to take my beer and physically escort me out. They stretched my shirt and threatened me. They can all kiss my ass.
