In June, I spent a week in Davis, much of it at Sudwerk. The food was great. I recommend the sausage platter.
With only German stlye beers, I was pleased with the selection. My favorites included the Marzen, the Hefeweizen, the Pilsner, and the Maibock. The brewery also produces a few kristal versions of their beers which are very pretty, very filtered, and lacking in the flavor category.
It is fun to be able to view active fermentation in the brewery's open tuns. On a nice day it is great to sit outside on the large enclosed patio.
By far the biggest let down was the service. Servers and bartenders did not seem to grasp the fact that a group of people waiting to order costs them money. More than one time I heard from employees, 'I not ignoring you guys, I'm just very busy right now.' In the time it took to explain how busy it was our beer order could have been placed and paid for. Unless you are the ONLY customer in the place, I recommend ordering the Liter size mug due to the slow pace of service.
I look forward to tasting the Sudwerk beers on my next visit to Davis, CA.

We came in today there was two of us, around 5:00 and were completely ignored for about 15 minutes. No menu, no water, nothing. There were plenty of employee standing around talking so it was not as if they were all to busy. Really disappointed! We left and went somewhere where they were happy to get our bussiness.

Could be the best place to eat in Davis. Always busy and full of life. German-style beers go extremely well with the food.

One of the few places to get Germanesque food in the Sacramento area. I like the Marzen. Service is generally good, although no one on the wait staff could tell me where they got the copy of the Reinheitsgebot posted on the wall.

I have been going to Sudwerk for years. Mostly at the old restaurant on Exposition in Sacramento. They closed and I now have to drive to Davis when I visit. Went during my last stay and had a good time watching the Kings at the bar. Started with a Pilsner and then a Marzen with dinner. Dinner was a very tasty Brauerjagerschnitzel...although a bit tough. The bartender was attentive and friendly, even though there was a huge party in the back room. This is a comfortable, friendly place with some pretty good beer at decent prices. If you are in the area, I would recommend a stop here.

I like the atmosphere here. I remember being impressed by this place when a friend of mine who went to Davis took me here even before I was a big brewpub guy. So I guess that counts for something.

Most of the reviews here are black and white, as if Sudwerk is either "Awesome/Great" or just "So-So." It's not right to take either extreme view. One the one hand, it is very remarkable that anyobdy can make German lagers even approaching what you get in Bavaria, given how hard it would be to get exactly the same hops (like the Tettnanger hop) in the same condition over here, etc. Having lived in Heidelberg for awhile, and using it as my base station for touring numerous breweries throughout Bavaria, I am positive that that the Sudwerk would be no embarrassment to Heidelbergers if it were sitting right on the Neckar river instead of in Davis. Now, it would not be among the very best lagers when compared to Bavarian greats such as Paulaner, Eku, and Maisel, but it would definitely hold its own. You can't do much better without crossing an ocean.

The bad reviews of the beer brewed here kind of confuse me. The beers are actually very good. I am a big fan of good beers and generally know a good beer from a bad one, and they certainly don't brew a bad one. I have never been to Germany and have never had German beers (except imports--which are generally made for the American market), but the friends that I have from Germany have said the beers here are fairly good. This is in comparison to the best German beers, mind you. So, all in all, I would say this brewery is pretty good.

This brewpub, the ponly one currently serving Davis, is a disappointment. While the initial taste of the beer is generally good, beer produced here lacks body. The Marzen is pretty good and is your best bet, but I would not go out of my way for a visit.

I've been to Munich many times, and the beer at Sudwerk is awesome - for the US. It would be just good in Munich. Still, that's a $1500 plane ride saved! If you're into schnitzel, kraut and sausage, food is better than good, otherwise, just okay. Excellent fries, though.

Excellent beer and food! Good service too! we all had great meals served by a cute little waitress. I was a bit dissappointed in the beer selection and the timing was wrong so I missed the Dunkle. Maybe next time.

If there were more beer styles this place would be much better, but as it is it's definately worth a stop. The marzen is great.

After visiting Munich, it's hard for me to be fair-and-objective to any German-oriented brewpub in The States. Be that as it may, this place is still over-rated -- catering to a college clintele that really doesn't care what they drink...//TSB

Perhaps half a dozen German lagers, all done quite well -- this place wins a lot of awards on that count & some of the previous reviews are kind of hard to understand in this respect. Menu is OK -- sausage sampler is a good bet, as is anything with the warm German potato salad. Service & atmosphere vary -- this is a college town and crowds come & go by the horde. Outside beer garden is pleasant in season. Live music sometimes, but the beer is really the reason to visit.

I always get excited when I am about to go to a brewpub centered around German lagers. Usually those who attempt these beers are serious brewers who care about their craft (e.g. Baltimore Brewing Company). These guys are the exception. This was by far the worse German lager house (in the U.S.) I have ever visited . The good news for folks visiting Davis is that there are great beer bars there (one has about 100 taps of mostly N. California beers). This place is the worse.

There is no rating category for ambiance which, for this place is a shame, as it may be the best part. There is a very large outdoor beergarden which is truly civilized and delightful. Inside the copper and brass brewing system is an awesome centerpiece. It looks too good to be operational but it is. I'm told it's a pain to brew on it since the brewer has to fight with the bartenders for elbow room. There are some small open fermenters in an adjacent room with big windows. I'm not sure if they still use the open fermenters since the frat guy went for a swim in one on a dare. They didn't even know what had happened until they found his wallet at the bottom. When I went to school at Davis we were into more cerebral pursuits, like putting a cow on the roof of the Student Union. Hey, at least we didn't ruin any beer! Food wise, I had the sausage sampler, very nice. Good sauerkraut and German potato salad to go with it and three kinds of mustard to choose from. The beers were good quality, not really amazing but very much better than any macrobrew. I applaud their making lager styles, it's a little more difficult and a takes a bit longer but it's a refreshing change from all-ale brewpubs. It's a good thing this place wasn't in business when I was in school because it's a great place to play hookey! Go for it Aggie!

Good quality beers, though the selection is limited, the service mediocre, and the food weak (the turkey burger, sausage sampler, and steak fries are pretty good are your best bets). Still, there are worse ways to spend an afternoon than hanging on the patio with a liter and some friends.

I go to Sudwerk usually a few times a week and I am a huge fan of their Helles, but it varies in consistency far too much. When it's "on" it's simply incredible. Smooth, rich creamy head. The best. The food, eh, the Cajun Ribeye is good, but nothing is a standout. When the Hefe is "on" it too is great, but it varies as well.

A little worried after seeing some of the reviews below, but no problems with service on a Friday evening. Standard brews include a Pilsner, Helles, Hefeweizen and Maerzen (biggest seller). A Maibock and Stout were also available. The Stout was as good as Beamish or Murphy's draught served IN Ireland, approaching Guinness. Other diners commented favorably on all brews tried (no Hefeweizen of Maibock takers this time). Food excellent also!

Good hefeweisen and stout. Thought waitress was going to have coronary when three out of eight people in my party asked for separate checks. Food was typical pub fare with smallish size portions.

Beers are okay, stout, hefeweizen best. Thought waitress was going to have coronary when I asked for separate checks (wanted to buy beer glasses). Menu is not very imaginative, standard pub fare.
