Fantastic place. Great for stopping in during a ride or meeting friends for a few. Very easy-going crowd...much less pretentious than at more typical San Antonio bars who can only hope to match beer selection. The reviewer who ranted about the "old lady" and the bikers would probably be at home at one of those other places. I bet the big bad bikers (or the local neighbors, college students, and other regulars) at H&D were far more friendly and accepting than the snob who wrote those disparaging remarks. Hills and Dales has been around for a long time which is a testament to how successful their business model is...and a commentary to the type of people it attracts...certainly not the "see-and-be-seen" crowd that can be found at the latest trendy flash-in-the-pan bar or nightclub that will be sold within a year or two.

Seems like a few people on here who definitely forgot to take their medications this morning! Some guy with a hang-up on "old lady"?!? Get over it, fella! Can't be talking about Lorena, the owner's wife. She knows more about beers and brewers than you ever will. A GREAT PLACE for beer lovers - a terrible place for frustrated posers. Bring a glass mug and a couple cigars and you're set for the evening! Okay, there will always be some blue collar Bud drinkers but hey, this is a democracy, and after all that just leaves more of the good stuff for us!

Yeah, I had a first date here once and LOVED it. I thought this guy must know me pretty well for him to pick H&D's as our first meeting spot. Wish I lived closer, though...

Just finished my 16th card. The place is as great as it has always been. You gotta love the complete lack of a social order there. A recent quote from the chalkboard in the men's room sums it up: "Karl Marx dreamt of a classless society. At Hills and Dale's he found it"
Great beer selection, good place to discuss it.

This bar has been around as long as I can remember and I finally stopped in to have a couple brews. I was pleasantly surprised at the their extensive beer selection of 54 draft beers and plenty more bottled in their cooler. Lots of good German beer here. The crowd is very diverse and the atmosphere is super laid back. Students, suits, bikers and anyone else is welcome and everyone is friendly. This place is a poor man's Flying Saucer, and I mean that strictly in a good way. FYI: Bring your own mug if you don't want to drink out of plastic.

I have been going to H&D for several decades now. The beer selection is awesome with 54 beers on tap and more in the coolers. The patrons are friendly and cover a wide range from blue collar workers to college students to professors. Wednesday night is biker night. Other nights the crowd is very mixed. This is an ice house (San Antonio tradition), where you serve yourself and sit at picnic tables inside or out. You can bring your own pint mug or drink from the plastic cups (I recommend bringing your own mug). No food is served. This is a beer bar and that is all they really serve. Pool tables (2) and darts (rubber tip and steel tip) are provided. The only complaint is the smoke. They really need to do something about the air handling system.

Hills and Dales is a beer-lovers true hangout. My buddy(Jason) who throws darts (steel-tip, not soft tip) with me here at this local pub can highly agree. I recommend this place. It's a biker bar for everyone, no matter who you are!

The place actually has 54 beers on tap. The taps are numbered -3, -2, -1, 0, then 1-50. Good mix of people in here, mostly open and friendly. Join the "Hall of Foam" beer club and get your name on the wall twice, and on the ceiling thereafter for each 54 tap beer circuit. I recommend bringing your own glass mug

If you are looking for a place to sit back..relax...and drink a cold beer, for smokers or non-smokers(smokers have the patio), you can't beat it! For the bikers, I own motorcycles and have truely met some of the nicest people this way. And like they say at Hills and Dales it just might be "THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE"!

I see an obvious mix of reviewers here: true beer drinkers with nothing to prove, who are looking for a place to relax and have a good beer with good people, and a bunch of Italian-shoe wearing sissies looking for somewhere to rub noses with high society while drinking the trendiest new bottle of overpriced micro-fizz with their pinkies out. Hills & Dales is a no-nonsense beer house with a devoted clientel. Guess which group they’re from? Personally, when I come home to San Antonio, this is one of my favorite places to unwind. Hey, if you have better places to be, Fabio, don’t let us low-lifes keep you.

kinda empty when we were there. beer selection was good, but i hated to drink a 7 dollar beer from a plastic dixie cup. waitresses would have been nice too, felt like i was drinkin a beer in a gutted liquor store that had the liquor taken out and the beer left. they even had a place to pay for your beer like a 7-11. overall, id go back, but at night.

obviously not a place for uptight beer drinkers. Their business model has worked for many years though, even prior to the last ten years that I've been going there. The bikers, golfers, college students, car guys, and blue collar crowd all get along famously. It's a great place, with a fine selection of beers.

Lots of beers, not many unusual ones. Too smokey. Lots of over the hill bikers. If you have a mug the draft beer is VERY reasonably priced. If you don't show up with one or buy a mug you will be drinking out of a small plasic cup.

1. Get rid of the Ozone Machine (gives an awkward foul smell) 2. Make the prices reasonable as compared to Central Market.

I really can not comment on most of the questions here, as when I stopped by I did so as a request for a friend. I will say that the establishment seem very relaxed and friendly. People that were there at the time, seem to be enjoying themselves. The selection of beer is awesome. I was really surprised as I did not know they had such a good selection. For someone interested in drinking some good beer; this is the place to go. One of the problems I noticed is that it is too much smoke, and that bothered me. If there was an improvement in circulation of air, this would be a good place to sit back and enjoy some good cold beer.

I recently visited the Hill and Dales Ice House and found it to be a very low key, casual and relaxing establishment. It was a little too smoked filled for me because I do not smoke. I stopped and asked questions to a few of the people that were there drinking. They seemed to be very much at home there and were very friendly. I would not mind going there agian. They had a very large selection of beer and I am told they have a band there on the weekends. It would be a nice place to go relax and visit with friends.

Concur with most of the previous reviews. The plastic cups may seeem a bit pedestrian, but on the other hand, you have complete freedom to move around, drink outside, etc. The draft IPA seemed very fresh. And the selection of bottle beer was simply outstanding - don't know how fresh it was, but wished I had time to try. But, alas, many of the patrons were swilling Bud/Miller Lite, and this doesn't help the turnover of their better beverages.

Good selection. Although I do understand the plastic cup thing, I still don't like drinking $5 beer from a $0.01 plastic cup. However, most of the people I saw here were drinking Bud Light longnecks.

This place was relaxing. Ok, here's a place that I visited on a Friday. There were guys in suits, next to the college crowd from the Univ. of Texas in S.A., next to the bikers, next to the locals and the turists. Anybody can come here dressed any way you want to and enjoy an incredible selection of beer in the bottle and on tap. I have never encountered any stale beer. There are too many people buying their beer! They have a solo entertainer on the weekends that's great and an outdoor patio that is even better. They have bikers night on Thursdays ( I think) and these are a bunch of friendly folks, no trouble here, as a matter of fact, I've seen these guys help out people when their car wouldn't start. So go to this place in your T-shirt and sandals and grab a seat in their German style beer hall, no pretensiousness here.

I've been coming here for nearly a decade since before they had taps of any kind. The beer quality varies from great to somewhat stale, but generally at the higher end of acceptable. In addition to the taps, they also have >150 bottled beers available, with the same freshness caveat. Don't let all of the Harley's scare you off; the crowd has never been violent, and there are lots of students that stop by from the university across the street.
