Service? What service? Smile, be patient, have fresh dollars ready, and state your order quickly and don't talk any smack. Then maybe, just maybe you'll get your beer. Or maybe not.
What can you say about Blue Moon? Seattle has been trying to kill this bar for years, and it keeps hanging in there, so you gotta love it.
The patrons are a drunk and mixed bag. It does have a pretty good book selection above most of the booths, so that is plus.
All in all, a kick-ass place.

This place is an iconic Seattle dive. The service is practically non-existent, but the clientele and atmosphere is waaaay eclectic. Our band has played there several times--not because we get paid, but just 'cause of this weird ambience. The place represents a train wreck of all sorts of different types: hippies, academicians, poets, musicians, drunks, street folk...you name it. It is a total dive--a Platonic ideal of a dive. You gotta check it.

Often times, there is fresh, raw sewage draining from the "Bathroom" and into the bar itself- with people tracking it all over the bar, so... I think they do serve beer and snacks in the bathroom! I don't know how you'd rate beer and food served out of a bathroom, though.

To sum it up: The beer is consistantly warm, the beer selection is good, the service IS the clientele- seeming to be looking for some fist to put some face in. My overall rating is that I don't loathe a business establishment in Seattle as much as I do The Blue Moon Tavern, now that I am a boyfriend-in-law of them, choosing instead to wait for My sweetheart, to come home from their clutches on fridays, rather than sit there waiting for her, gritting my damn teeth. If you like flippant psuedo-liberals you might like it. If you don't, it was an educational experience then.

Legendary, but go mainly to say you've been. You have to picture what the place looked like when it was hip 50 years ago or something. Sunday night is Dead Night (or was); Monday's Opera Night. Many of the drunks are certainly quite historic, but if you look like you get paid via salary, you'll stand out and your service will suffer. There's a backgammon board behind the bar that you can probably play. Not too many Seattle bars are this continuously-operating-ly old, and that's the main attraction for those who aren't deadheads, blue collar, or Husky nostalgia seekers.

I wonder why I wasted so much time in annoying Seattle traffic to visit this hole. I didn't see any beatniks, the smell was awful, and the only poetry was the 4-letter kind of a slumped over bum (all I saw were bums). Service?? I'd rate it if I found any. The beer was even flat. If you want a classic Seattle dive, go to Pioneer Square.

This place is a total stinking dump. Don't buy that crap about it being some 'historic' spot. Save your $$ for some real Seattle entertainment- Lord knows you got choices!!

Following World War II, the U. of Washington was loaded with veterans attending school under the GI Bill of Rights. In those days, as you may remember, the closest tavern to the U W campus had to be a minimum of one mile away. The BLUE MOON was the nearest for me and a dozen or more of my fellow veteran students. We gathered there almost nightly and shared thousands of thoughts.
TV was just starting, and you had a very small set to the left of the bar with some sort of msgnifying device which attempted to allow the viewer to see the picture. We saw the Joe Louis - Marciano fight there which marked the end of a boxing era.
I was from Wenatchee, others were from Cashmere, Walla Walla. Butte, Montana, Vancouver B. C. (a D-Day survivor from the 3rd Canadian Div)
We drank Olympia draft beer and enjoyed ourselves trememdously.
I actually met a Husky football player from the '30's who specialized in drop kicks. The sign of another disappearing era.
This is very long e -mai, but my brother from Des Moines,Wa sent me a Seattle Times clipping about the Blue Moon and it brought back a rush of wonderful memories.

The Blue Moon is a great place with a ton of history and an eclectic crowd that loves to hear good music. It's long been a place where artists, writers, poets, and other social outcasts gather to drink and talk and drink some more. "The Moon" has entertained the likes of Dylan Thomas, Alan Ginsberg, Hieronymus Bosch, Richard Hugo, and some say Jack Kerouac even stopped in once or twice. The Blue Moon also features a small library, and they don't mind if you borrow books, just bring them back "someday."

If you've seen the bar in the first Star Wars movie, this is as close as it gets in real life. Artists, politicians, crackpots, professors, students, riff-raff and tourists in a random mix. Good conversation, ecclectic music choices by bartenders.

"Blue Moon allegedly has reopened... please tell us more... new owners? This iteration is owned by the McMenimans group, which seems to own half the brewpub/beer bars in Seattle and Portland.
