I went here 2 times last week - once at lunch and once at dinner. Neither time was particularly busy, but both times the service was slow. During lunch I sat at a table, after being seated by a hostess, and for 10 minutes there was no service so I gave up and went to the bar. The service was slow even at the bar. Perhaps the bar is just too large.
The beers, on the other hand, were outstanding. Very interesting selection. The SourPuss, a Flemish Red style, was a little thin but a great effort. The FruitCake was a wonderful fruity belgian style, despite its horrible name. In addition they had a spicy belgian style and a double IPA, in addition to their usual lineup. The brewers clearly care about their product and have tremendous talent. The service is unfortunate.

The food and service were excellent. The beers were good. The Fuel Imperial is an excellent beer but taste test if first as the style is not for everyone. The Pale Rider and Amber Wave were surprisingly hoppy and refreshing and the Oatmeal Stout was a decent finish. I would go back.

I visited this fine establishment tonight, and the only complaint I have is that the bar is not a non-smoking area! Well, what do you expect in Virginia?!
I sampled the full selection of 8 beers. All were good. I thought the Saison was excellent, with a dry, spicy palate and a lingering finish. The Pale Ale had an interesting dry-malt note, and the Amber was wonderfully hoppy. I detected an off-phenolic note in the Weizen, but only in one sip. I ended my meal with the Biere de Garde, which was very interestingly and subtly spiced with pepper, coriander and ginger. Oh, yes, the duck salad was great!

I need to rectify the reputation of this establishment. The head brewer, Mike, and his assistant, Kevin, are incredible brewers and have a loyal following. Mike recently left the Capitol Hill location to work in the Arlington store, supplying beer for both Shirlington and the New York Ave location as production has shut down at that site. The quality and style of beers produced at these locations surpasses ALL area breweries. The brewer has received medals at the GABF for his Kolsch and Ambers, and the specialty brews are always exciting. Not only do visitors return for Mike's beer from around the country, but from "real" beer nations in Europe as well. The beers are clean-tasting, carefully-maintained brews that deserve a taste by any beer-loving visitor in town. Oh yea, and the food is good too : )

After having been to the DC Cap City I expected the same level of service and quality. Boy was I wrong... The beer selection was limited to about four on this night, I ordered the pale ale, which was nothing to write home about, and my girlfriend ordered the hefeweisen, which had a "spoiled" flavor to it.
The service in this aprticular Cap City was appalling, or server, Freddy showed up about 15 minutes after we were seated, and really acted like he didn't want to be there. We had to go to the bar to get our first drink order. Freddy served up the second round with a mumbled "Happy?" under his breath.
Needless to say the Arlington Cap City is permanantly "off the list"

Cap City has a comfy feel and a really nice beer selection year round. This is a good place to kick back in the D.C. area. If my memory serves me correctly, I had an interesting orange wheat beer here that tasted pretty good. Check out their glassware. You can buy little tasting mugs with the brewery logo etched on it. It makes a nice souvenier. Ask your server what's on tap, sometimes you'll get a goodie not shown on the menu.

It will be interesting to see what happens here and at the other 'Cap City' brewpubs around the Washington, D.C. area in the next several months. They have good brewers on staff, but the chain's Executive Brewer Bill Madden has departed to become the brewer and part owner of Founders, a brewpub in Alexandria, Va. While the current Cap City beers, such as a kolsch and wee heavy made to Madden's excellent recipes, are still being made -- at least for now -- changes are likely.

Very high-end street of shops and restaurants, but Cap City's still a good place to hoist yourself up on a stool and sample some great beers. Please don't turn your noses up at the Kölsch: this is very nice beer indeed. I think you'll find the beers at this CC tend to be more nuanced than some of the others: Bill Madden (and his new assistant, John Bryce, formerly at Blacksburg Brewing) is generally a fan of balanced beers, though when he decides to go big it's usually over the top. Witness his recent Imperial IPA, which was damned near lethally hopped.

Don't just rely on the beer list at the bar or on the wall before you choose what to drink but ask if any "stealth beers" are available on tap; Cap City sometimes has an unadvertised offering that you have to know to ask for. These tend to be extreme brews (like their Imperial IPA) or something available in very small quantities (like their barleywine). Their intent in making them "stealth beers" is to reserve such treats for the 'family' and for the appreciative.

Beer quality is average-to-good, but it's one of the only games in town if you're into microbrews. The food is simply average and not a bargain. Service at the bar is good, but sit at a table and it's a crapshoot.

The 6 beer sampler did not disappoint. I washed down some of the best meatloaf I've ever had with a pint of chocolate porter. Nothing terribly unique about CapCity, but who cares, especially when you're just looking to unwind.

This location now kegs for the downtown DC site. Nitro gold ale and rye ale were both very good, well balanced and tasty.

Okay, I'm biased since I consider Capitol City a home away from home. But I love the variety and quality of the beers, and the bartenders are friendly and knowledgable. You'll often find the brewmeister behind the bar or sitting at the bar, and he'll happily give you a lesson on his brews.
The food is also really tasty, and they often dish up some really special fare.
Worth a special trip!!

After just moving to the DC area I needed to find out the local tastes. I brew beer myself so I wanted quality. It just so happened that the weekend I arrived you were having a brewfest at Shirlington Village. I was impressed with the quality and the range of beers. I have become a frequent customer and will remain so. The stout is excellent and the Octoberfest is beyond belief. Keep up the good work.

I stopped here for lunch and brew on 13 April. It's a very impressive place. I had some very good calamari and a bratwurst sandwhich. They had 8 beers that day and I got to all of them. Bob made my visit very enjoyable and was able to answer most of my questions about the beer. I particularly liked the Bitter, the Kolsch, and the Stout. The beers were all very drinkable and had good head retention. The Bitter and the Kolsch had a nice toasty thing going on and the Stout was very flavorful without being aggressive. All in all, a nice job.

Their Porter and Pale Ale are really good. This is a solid place to hang out and get a beer mainly during happy hour when they have specials. However, the atmosphere is not as inviting as other places and the noise level can get pretty darn loud sometimes.

Beer is always dependable and always several types on tap. As for food, stick with burgers, sandwiches & salads & you'll be fine; venture not into the "Entree" column. Good kid's menu, too. Same review applicable for the one in DC on Mass. Ave., across from Union Station.
