Took a couple of passes to find this place. It is on OLD Plank Road, not Plank Road. Once I found it I really enjoyed the place. Old Tavern feel lent well to the exceelent selection of taps and bottled beer available. Had 3 pints of hard-to-find ales from out-of-state. Had some good hot chicken wings that went well with the Ales. New Barmaid was very friendly and willing to learn. Locals were fun to be around and I enjoyed the atmosphere and conversations! The owner was a definite Beer Guy and enjoyed talking Beer Geek! THIS IS WHAT A BEER BAR SHOULD BE!!!!

Easy to miss this place driving by on route 32 but it is well worth the effort. A little bedraggled looking from outside and unassuming inside, but it is a very clean and comfortable establishment. Best of all, they have a thoughtful selection of delicious beer all served to you by a very knowledgable and extremely friendly staff. Even the patrons are all friendly. I think we talked to everyone that came in the place and it was quite busy. The owner spent a lot of time talking with us, sharing his beer insights and showing off his impressive collection of taps (current and retired), thanks Brian! Becky was outstanding behind the bar with her smarts on what's on tap. Despite some of the other reviews, we had chili and it was excellent, went great with the beer. I was sorry they didn't accept credit cards, so bring cash, but they sure were easy on our wallets so it wasn't a big deal. They don't open until 2PM on weekdays so don't show up for lunch like we did, but it was worth waiting and we had lunch and dinner, eventually. Nice pool table on hand, spotless bathroom. I'll be back. Great place if you like beer and friendly people!

Great Great N/A Great Great
I was looking for a place for Great Beer, Great Conversation and dinner. I found the first two.

Sorry, I wasn't in the mood for chicken strips and fries. Although I did polish off a bowl of shelled peanuts.

Now let's discuss the important stuf..... the BEER !The staff was fantastic, when I told them what I was in search of (beer-wise) they steered me in the right direction with a couple of interesting and thoroughly enjoyable suggestions. They are knowledgeable and fun to chat with. Becky is a hoot and knows her beer as does Brandon.

This will certainly be on my list of places to return to....although next time i'll eat first.

Outstanding selection of less common beers on tap and just a couple of the mandatory macros. Brand loyalty is obvious here. A couple of taps each of Smuttynose, Lake Placid and Brooklyn, and a lot of other ones. 18 taps in all. Smuttynose Scotch Ale was a treat. Huge malt and lots of warmth from the alcohol. If your hungry, the home-made chili ranks with the best I've had. The regulars are friendly, the atmosphere relaxed. It's hard to find this place, but keep trying. This place is all about the beer, and if I lived closer, I'd be here often. Not a lot of pandering to the big brewers. This is a good thing.

Point blank...a lot of good beer here. You'd have to travel a considerable distance to find this much good beer. Many of the regulars still drink the mass marketed stuff, but they're pretty friendly here, and they don't look at you funny when you order something good from the 18 taps. This place is very comfortable. The beer is fresh, they have a broad range of beer styles on tap and in bottles, and the wings are terrific. If you're passing by the area, leave a little early and stop here.

It's not easy to find this place, but it's well worth the effort. They've got 18 taps serving up some very tasty choices, and about 50 bottle choices. You won't find many within a 50 mile radius. Stone, Middle Ages, Flying Dog, Bert Grant's and other out-of-the-ordinary are what you'll find on tap, and bottles from Southern Tier, Victory, and Otter Creek. (They have only 2 draft beers that I would never drink! But they try to please everybody and do a good job at it.) I had a Middle Ages Wizard Winter that was very good, and then switched to UBU, both on tap and both fresh. My girlfriend had a Grant's Fresh Hop and ordered a mug of Brooklyn Monster. (Not her style, so I drank it. Yummy!)She switched to the house beer, Golden Rail IPA. I don't know who makes it, but it was among the better IPA's either of us have had. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The beef stew was terrific, and my girlfriend's wings were too, but she should have asked for mild, because they were HOT. Nice atmosphere and friendly regulars make this a great place to frequent.

I've been going into the Rail since it opened in 1977. It's still the best place I've found to try a wide selection of seasonal and out-of-the-ordinary brews that you won't find anywhere else. I have to say that their contract brew, Golden Rail IPA is one of the best brews I have EVER had... easily on a par with Sierra Nevada Celebration, and miles ahead of anything that ever came from Sam Adams of Anheuser-Busch.

I stopped in at around noon yesterday becasue I heard that they are now opening for lunch. For the price of a Big Mac meal, I had better food and more of it for about the same price. For lunch, or just to hang out, play pool and watch a game, I would recommend this place to anyone. Keep up the good work!

Visited the area for Thanksgiving with my girlfriend, who grew up in this area. Saw a really good local band here. For every Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale or Sam Smith's they sold, 20 Bud Lights were sold. Never mind the Bud Lights... get some taste "buds"! They carry a lot of good beer here, and they have a tap beer that I never even heard of, Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale. Very drinkable, but I went back to pints of Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. I'll definitely be back to this place when we come back for Christmas.

I came back to check on the two empty taps that they had in August. Not a single one empty! Now they have 18, with some really good additions. Brooklyn Saison and Sam Adams Chocolate Bock are on, but I couldn't make a steady diet of either one. The Saison had a nice citrus note, but the Bock was a little strong on the chocolate. It'd be great with dessert, or in small quantities. Some high-end English ales have been added to the bottle selections, like Hobgoblin, Black Sheep Ale, and a couple from St.Peter's. Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale is supposed to be coming on tap. I guess it's so because they already have the tap handle displayed behind the bar. The wings were great in August, so this time I tried the chili. I have to update my food rating to awesome, because that's what the chili was, despite the fact that purists wouldn't appreciate the beans.

Compared to other bars within a 30 minute ride (or maybe more), the choices here are awesome. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the food is really quite good, even though they really don't spend too much time promoting it. They put their emphasis on beer, and carry plenty of it. If you want a place that gets some rare drafts, this might be it. They just got some Sam Adams Chocolate Bock and Brooklyn Saison delivered, but they weren't on tap yet. Good reason(s) to come back...

Came here to watch NFL football Sunday. It's closeby, has great beer and shows the Jets and Giants games! (Sunday Ticket is OK, but not instead of the home teams.) Brooklyn Oktoberfest is on tap here (and 16 others), but no German fests are here yet, tap or bottle. Just a little disappointment there, but the bartender said that they're coming. Their chili and wings are awesome, and they have an NFL Club and a Stein Club, so you can get decent discounts on some great beers. This is a comfortable place to catch the games. No big TV's, but there are 4 located around the bar, so all the seats are good. Go Jets!

Awesome variety of good beer, with some world class choices. The staff is friendly and the food is great for a small place that doesn't even really promote it. There's a lot to do here, with Quickdraw, pool, bumper pool, darts, foosball, horseshoes and even a pinball machine!

Previous reviews made me curious about the place. Is it really that good? Well, yes, but they only had 15 taps on instead of the usual 17. (I hate to see empty taps.) Two were covered by plastic cups, and the bartender couldn't tell me what was being put on the empty knobs. I made a few suggestions, but I was told that the owners had new styles on order, but hadn't told them what they were yet. The variety here is tremendous, with lots of hard to find bottles, too. You can probably get most of the beers sold here at a beer distributor, but it's unusual to find them at a bar. Smithwick's, Ommegang Witte, and Brooklyner Weisse were the 3 I had. The draft lines are obviously cared for because the beers tasted very fresh, unlike some establishments that think the lines clean themselves. Their house wings were among the hottest I've ever had without requiring oxygen. It's a shame that this place is off the main drag. With a little more visibility, they'd be a lot busier, and they should be.

I just turned 21, so I was anxious to get here. The beer selection rocks! They have 17 taps, so it'll be a few trips to try them all. The Ommegang Witte is great on draft, and they have 5 Brooklyn beers on tap, too. It's too bad I had to wait until I was 21 to come here. The drinking age should be rolled back to 19.

Few places offer such a friendly atmosphere and an outstanding beer selection, too. This casual pub pays attention to upscale brews and changes the offerings based upon the seasons, not just on what the suppliers want to force on consumers palates. On tap, Brooklyn Lager has just replaced Brooklyn Brown Ale, and Stella Artois and Sam Adams Summer brew have been added to their impressive selection of 17 taps. You can't even see this place from the main drag (Route 32), but just ask any local how to get to The Rail, and they'd have to have been raised in a vacuum to not have an answer for you! There's a lot to do here, with Quickdraw, pool, darts (Widdy and traditional), horseshoes, fusbol, and free bumper pool. Great beer, great company, and great (but limited) food prevail here.

This is one of the most comfortable pubs that I've ever been in (and I've been in many, here and abroad.) The beer is fresh, and many of the drafts have the corresponding drinking vessel, such as the full range of Ommegang brews. The owners know a lot about the craft beer business, as evidenced by the presence of no less than 17 taps. You can still get a Bud or Coors Light, but they'll definitely try to convince swill drinkers to upgrade to something decent. The burger I had was huge, and the price was modest, as is the cost of their many fine brews. Put this place on your short list.

What atmosphere and hospitality, THANK YOU Brian and AnneMarie...there is a wonderful quality and selection of tapped brews I was especially fond of "Mother's Milk" and GR IPA!

AnneMarie, your "homemade" chilli and beef stew were to die for. Both were made to appeal to everyone's taste; chilli was hearty and not brothy at all whereas the beef stew was adequately brothy and ladened with stew beef!

With bumper pool (WHAT A CONCEPT!) a billiard table, foosball table, dart board etc. there's plenty to do too include relaxing and savoring many taps!

I visited this place on St. Patrick's Day. They're not an Irish pub, but you'd never know it. I had heard that their corned beef was free, so I was a little disappointed to find them charging for it. It wound up being quite alright because it was probably the best I ever had (and the $3 Guinness pints didn't hurt either.) It was cooked in stout, and I couldn't even finish my portion. This is a great pub, and I just heard that they're adding Smithwick's to their already impressive tap selections. Next year, I'll definitely be here again for St. Patrick's day. Two words to the uninitiated... go there!

This place is close to everything, but off the beaten path. I'm ashamed to admit that I live close by and had never been here before. It took me a while to find it, but when I discovered the beer selections on tap, I wouldn't have cared if it took longer. It was well worth it. There isn't an establishment (that I've found) within 30+ miles that has the wide range offered here. The proprietor doesn't just acquire them, he is eager offer samples to the uninitiated, and to discuss other beer styles, too. Brian and some of his friends were lamenting over their inablity to make it down to Brooklyn for the unveiling of the brewery's Scotch Ale, but found solice in being told that a barrel of "Sustaining Porter" would be coming their way soon. It's availability will be very limited, so I'm not surprised that this place would be in line to get it. I thoroughly enjoyed the Davidson Brothers Golden, and the house IPA is out of this world. So was AnneMarie's Chili! Make it a point to stop here when you're in the area. You won't be disappointed.

Great Great N/A Great Great
I was actually in Monticello overnight (about 50 miles away). There is nothing anywhere near Monticello, so I logged onto Pubcrawler and found this place in an acceptable driving distance.

Considering the alternatives, the beer selection here is great.

The house beer, Golden Rail IPA is one of the best I have ever had. Brian, the owner, was reluctant to tell me who makes this beer for him, but he finally shared the secret. Unfortunately, I might be back in the area sometime, and if I reveal the secret, I might not be allowed back in.

The Mothers Milk stout was fresh and delicious, as was the Brooklyn Brown and Monster.

Brian told me the Fullers ESB was about 2 weeks old, so I passed in favor of a second Golden Rail IPA.

He tells me he is constantly changing taps, so repeat visits should be worthwhile.

While other reviewers here have said the food was great, I didn't get to try anything. I guess I got wound up in tasting the great beers and enjoying the atmosphere and conversation with Brian and a couple of the regulars.

This is a great bar to spend an evening at, both from the beer perspective and from a comfort perspective. Nothing fancy, just good beer and good company. They made a out of town visitor feel right at home.

Great atmosphere, outstanding beer selection. The day I went, they had just tapped "Mother's Milk" from Keegan Ales (Kingston, NY). A few days earlier, they had added "Davidson Brothers Golden" (Glens Falls, NY). It was a brief respite that I had, so I didn't get a chance to eat, but the regulars say that the chili, wings and stew are the best around. The server was friendly, and offering a sample before I ordered a full pint was a nice touch. There is such a thing as catering to the masses while thoroughly satisfying those who appreciate finer brews. It happens here.

Awesome! Great Great Great Great
My first impression was that the gambrel-roofed building doesn't look that big, but with such a large parking lot, it must be deceivingly large inside. There's some rustic charm going on here, starting with the post and rail fence surrounding a welcoming patio. As you enter, the room opens up to your right, with a bumper pool table just passed the Golden Tee golf game. On you immediate left are two dart boards, one a bristle board, and one a Widdy. There is a well thought out partition between the boards, which serves as an appropriate place to rest your glass. Just beyond is a foosball table, an ATM, a NY Lottery Terminal and an Instant Ticket machine. There is abundant wood and brick inside, remnants of the bar's previous life as a toll house in the 1700's (it dates back that far!) The well stocked bar itself is a huge piece of wood, about 3" thick, seating about 16, with the irregular bark side of the tree facing the customers. As you pass the bar, there is a raised stage, where original acts play on some weekends. When there are no bands, the stage area has tables with board games like chess, checkers, connect four, and the recently added "Shut The Box" game, an appropriate amusement, given the English pub atmosphere that prevails here. At the edge of the stage, there is a short set of steps leading to a raised area, where the pool table and bathrooms can be found. There are pool leagues several nights a week. Now for the important stuff....the brews. The 16 taps offer some great variety and some world class ales and lagers. There is an emphasis on drinking better beer here, and it's so nice that the big 3 (Bud, Coors, Miller) don't get the lion's share of tap handles here. There seems to be a loyalty to the Brooklyn Brewery, but that's certainly not a problem....they brew good beer. In addition to their Black Chocolate Stout and Brown Ale, they now offer the Monster Barleywine Style Ale on draft. (They have the wisdom to forbid pints or pitchers of that product.) Among the other offerings are Fuller's ESB, Yuengling (they were one of the first bars in NY to offer it on tap), Magner's Irish Cider, Guinness, Bass, Harp, and a terrific Golden Rail IPA. They have made for them by a brewer in upstate NY, who also bottles it under another name, but they wouldn't tell me who the brewer is. (I have a real problem with that, because it's so good that I want to be able to get some for home!) The owners told me that Davidson Brothers Golden Ale is being added soon, as well as Keegan Ales Old Capitol. The bottle selection is very good for a pub this size in a rather remote location. While the usual offerings are there, you can sometimes enjoy some hard to find seasonals like Sam Smith's Winter Welcome, Geary's Hampshire Ale and Anchor Special Ale. They didn't have all of them when we were there, but we were told that they're coming, and based on the current choices, I have to believe them. On to the food. I had some of the beef stew, and it was very tasty, with cubed beef instead of the more easily found ground beef variety. The portion was abundant, and a large chunk of fresh bread was provided with it. My friend had a Railburger with fries, and it was so big that she couldn't finish it. We had wanted AnneMarie's Chili but, sadly, on the day we were there, they were sold out, so it must be good. The owners were working on the afternoon we went. They know a lot about their offerings, and it was obvious that Brian would much rather be on the other side of the bar talking about the brews, and maybe even having one. Sheetrockers, stockbrokers, auto mechanics, other bar owners, and true beer aficionados frequent this place. They rub elbows and shoot pool or darts together, and the camaraderie here is outstanding. If you live within 20 minutes of here, this might become your place. And, if you do have too much, Safe-Rider will take you home 7 nights a week within a ten mile radius. What a deal!
