First trip to DC from the UK. Stumbled across the ChopHouse from an entry in the guide book. Beers were great - the IPA was stunning and the various brown beers were rich and full of flavour. Prices were good although main courses less so - thankfully we Brits can more than survive on starters in the US. Would definitely recommend a visit

I wasn't sure what to expect from this place, being part of the Rock Bottom chain. I like the Rock Bottoms but hoped this would be a little different. It sure was. The beer selection resembles the typical offerings available from Rock Bottom - light through stoudt. While the ones we tried where very good there wasn't anything that was drop-dead terrific. What really separated it from Rock Bottom was the food. Four of us ordered dinners and no one was disappointed. ChopHouse distinguishes itself from Rock Bottom by being more upscale while still maintaining that typical brewpub atmosphere. Definately stop in if you're in the area.

I've read about this place for years and my son highly recommended it, so when I arrived in DC with six students for a convention we walked seven blocks from the hotel to the DC&B. None of the seven of us was disappointed. One student ordered a pizza thinking it was the size of an appetizer and it was so huge she shared it with me. It had succulent steak. I was too full to order anything of my own; their gratis cornbread was also a factor in satiating my appetite. One student had the honey chicken sandwich and pronounced it awesome. Three women ordered salads, which were man-sized. Two of us had the nut brown ale, one had the Oktoberfest, one had an amber, one had the pale ale and one had the light lager (wimp!), and everyone was pleased. The lager and nut brown were the only ones to which happy hour applied ($2.50). I mixed an amber and the oatmeal stout for my second; pricey at $5.75, but most satisfying. The atmosphere also impressed us out-of-towners, but what really impressed me is the lack of ear-splitting music common to so many brewpubs, which squelches conversation. I bought a souvenir pint glass and I'll return the next time I'm here.

Awesome place with real beer. In this place even the roof is real brick!!!! Great steaks and not anything like a chain. try the stacked onion rings and pizza on a thin tortilla type shell. Sounds like bar food, but way better. Pool on second level. Go Caps!!!!

Good Great Good So So Good
I visited this brewpub on 10/26/06 and had the following brews; Light Lager, Amber Ale, Octoberfest, Oatmeal Stout and Burbon Stout. Unfortunately we had just eaten at Gordon Biersch around the corner and could only sample the cornbread which was outstanding. We also had a piece of chocolate cake that was a big as my head. The cake seemed to be a little dry. The burbon stout was served at cellar temperatures and I would have prefered it chilled. The oatmeal stout went very well with the cake. I am also a hophead and I did miss having an IPA on the selection. My waiter was not very attentive and was uninterested in the fact that this brewpub was the 200th brewpub that I have visited. I was also disappointed that they did not have any souvenir glass ware so that I could always remember my 200th brewery. I would return again if I had the chance.

We go to the DC in DC each time we visit the Capital. Have had only the best experience there- The TP (total package) is what brings us back- BEER, Food and Service. Met brewer at Cap City's beer fest in October- the beer stood up to the competition out there 'in the field'. Husband loves Bourbon Stout- I enjoyed the Brown this last visit. See you in November.

I think the comments from 2Brew is out-of-line. Never have I had a bad beer from the ChopHouse. The selection is great and I have tried most all of their beers. Just love the food too. The plates are so full that I usually pass on the wonderful cornbread.

Great response, Barrett. "Amateur beer drinkers like yourself" - too funny. Read some of that guy's (2Brew) other reviews - he'll never be happy. Bet he's loads of fun to hang with at a bar. "This beer sucks, it's not hoopy enough, dammit." Whatever.

For those of you who enjoy drinking beer more than you enjoy complaining about beer, you'll probably like the Chophouse. The oatmeal stout is excellent, as is the IPA. Haven't tried the others, as I'm mainly a stout/IPA guy. Place has great food, too. Been there a bunch of times, with a lot of different people, and no one's ever had a bad time with the food. Does tend to get a little crowded at the expected times.

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Barrett Lauer and I am the Brewer at The District ChopHouse and Brewery. I am writing here for two reasons. First and foremost, I would like to thank all of the "beer folk" for their support and interest in the craft brewing industry. Secondly, I feel I need to respond to the posting left by 2brew due to the personal nature of his review. This is the first extremely negative review I've received and felt I had to respond.

I'm glad that you enjoyed your meal and the service at our establishment. I'm sorry you thought my beers were weak and not "hoopy"(I think you meant hoppy). All of my beers have an O.G. of 13 degrees Plato or higher, except for the Light Lager. When you visited my beer selection this: O.G.

Light Lager 9.2 Amber Ale 13.0 Nut Brown Ale 14.0 Oatmeal Stout 15.5 Bourbon Stout 15.5 HefeWeizen 14.0 IPA 15.5 Velvet was not serving on that day

If one likes hops one would order an IPA. Also the Amber you had is a NW Style and is generously hopped with over .75 lbs per barrel, though most of the hops are Cascade and are heavily loaded toward the back of the beer(Aromatic). The Amber Ale has 43 IBU's. That's pretty hoppy for an Amber Ale.

I have 8 serving tanks and very little room for kegs, hence the "limited selection". I still find almost everyone finds a beer that they enjoy in the line-up. If you ever come to the ChopHouse again or go to any other brewpubs I would recommend ordering a "Sampler". Most brewpubs do this. The customer gets a small amount of the beers on tap. This way one can try them all. In fact at The District ChopHouse a first-time customer gets a "SAMPLER FOR FREE !" This helps "amateur beer drinkers" like yourself pick a "hoopy" beer like the IPA.

Lousy Lousy Awesome! Great Good
I went to the Chophouse with my wife and her co-worker. Beer selection was lousy. They did not have any hoopy beers and I'm a hophead. The beers they had were watery and at best uneventful. The amber had a taste of wet cardboard. Stout had the taste of an old shoe. I honestly thought they had amatuer brewmaster night and that is how they brew their beer that was how bad it was.

On the flipside the food and service was excellent and did make up for the poor beer. I had the lamb and it was perfect. My wife had the stuffed trout and it melted in your mouth. It really was that good. Portion sizes were fantastic. The surf and turf was enough for two people.

I will go back for the food and the service but the beer----yuck!!!

The Chophouse is one of several such establishments around the US. So it's technically a chain but the similarity with other chain brewpubs ends there. The six beers were all very quafable, though I would have preferred to see an IPA or something with more hops in it. The cask stout was superb. The hefeweizen was likewise a favorite. The food (plank-grilled salmon and chicken marsala) was excellent. Service was efficient with typical downtown DC brusqueness. Well worth finding and this will be a repeat stop on future visits to DC.

When you are in DC, go see the Lincoln Memorial, the Smithsonian, the White House and visit the DC Chophouse! This place was probably the best part of my trip to DC. For anyone from the NYC area, the DC Chophouse reminds me a lot of the Heartland Brewpub chain. Trendy, but fun. A loud atmosphere. Their oatmeal stout was creamy and smooth. They make a bourbon stout by aging their oatmeal stout in bourdon barrels. It is hand pumped and delicious. They had a beer Velvet beer which is basically a smoother, creamier version of their traditional amber. It was nice to be at a place that served 2 stouts and a porter all at once. With dinner, they give you a complimentary serving of corn bread in a small skillet. It goes good with the beers. Somewhat pricey, but worth a stop for any beer lovers in the DC area.

We had a fantastic time at the Chophouse. Great atmosphere and service. Prices are very reasonable, with large portions; service was OUTSANDING!! Tried the sampler, the light lager was very good, crisp, and light in color and body. The amber is a fantastic beer with a mild hop. The bourbon stout is a fantastic offering and much more complex than the otmeal stout. I must say, I was disappointed in the hefe. I went back the next day and had a $2.50 happy hour pint. The Chophouse is a must when in DC.

I was there Saturday night, we arrived around 6:30PM and the wait was about 30 minutes, not bad for a Sat. nite. We found a spot at the bar and I sampled some brew while waiting for a table. I started with one of the Brewers Choice beers, the Belgian Trippel. Its a strong 11.5 ABV, sweet with notes of bubblegum and apples, but the finish was a little off. Next came the Dunkel Weizen Bock. Too much Weizen flavor and not quite enough Dunkel for my tastes, the banana notes were very strong, but could have been balanced more by the roasted malts. It was a good brew, don't get me wrong, but not enough of that roasty flavor for a dunkel. Next came the Nut Brown, a very solid well balanced amber beer. I also sampled the Velvet ale, the nitro version of the Amber Ale, which was creamy and smooth. I ended with a sample of the Bourbon Stout. Very stron bourbon notes give way to a nice chocolate-espresso finish. The service at our table was top notch, as was the food. I would come again, and its right down the street from RFD, so it makes for a nice DC pub crawl stop.

Too bad Jason D. is leaving: hope they get someone REAL GOOD in to replace him. Chophouse beers were excellent under his hands: if only for the outstanding Bourbon Stout. This is a great place to go to, proof that "brewpub" doesn't have to mean "beer with burgers and pizza."

Bourbon stout was wonderful. A veru hoppy IPA. Great mussels at the bar. We'll go back for dinner, but this is the best beer I've found so far in DC. Worth a trip on the metro to the Chinatown stop

The food outshines the beer here. The beers are tasty but not outstanding. Each weekday 2 beers are on special ($2.50 pints) from 4-7 pm. The bar area is not huge and make sure to check the MCI Center schedule before going. It gets very crowded before/after Caps/Wizards games.

This place was exactly what I was looking for: a nice local brewpub with good food and nice but casual atmosphere. Restaurant and bar on ground floor, another bar area upstairs. I ate in the bar, had some great filet mignon Oscar and the American wheat beer. I thoroughly enjoyed the beer, the food, and the environment. Plus, you can buy and smoke cigars upstairs. Was somewhat crowded when I got there and got more crowded later in the evening. It's very popular, and it's right next to the MCI arena, and only steps from a Metro station.
