Either I've raised my expectations of what a beer bar should carry since my last visit six years ago, or Mad Mex's tap offerings have slipped a bit. I suspect it's some of both. I don't remember workaday mass-brews like Miller Lite, Dos Equis, Sam Adams and Guinnes occupying four out of nine taps like they do now. Local/regional/craft tap offerings include Troeg's Hopback and Troegenator, Heavyweight Lunacy, Sierra Bigfoot and Rogue Imperial IPA. Bottle selection is adequate with about 50 options, generally expounding on the same quality and theme as the taps. Food remains the highlight of this establishment. It is a unique if not authentic take on Mexican food. To be fair, the menu's intro and “Gringo Spanish” intone that the food is an interpretation of Mexican fare rather than a faithful recreation. Service was excellent. Bartender was extremely friendly, chatty, and doing a fine job of making us feel welcome. Minor nitpick: I would prefer not to name the server in question because I don’t want him/her to get in trouble, but he/she had very harsh words for many of the beers this place serves, and not just the crummy swill beers. We appreciated that the server was knowledgeable about beer and willing to share an opinion or two, but it was not very good business form to unrepentantly badmouth several of the products the establishment carries, especially if the patron has already expressed a liking for many of them. This could be easily mistaken as disrespecting the patron's personal taste. In all I would say Mad Mex leaves a bit to be desired as a beer bar destination, but it would still be on the top of my list for a casual meal and a decent bottle of suds with friends.

I was fortunate to live about a mile from their back in the mid 90's. I loved Mad Mex and would like to make a return trip back to Pittsburgh (to live) and to see how Mad Mex is doing years later. Great then, sure it is still great. BTW, I went for the beer, not the food. Food fills the stomach up leaving less room for good beer!!!

The Wings keep me comin back!
Probably THE best wings I've ever had. Next time you go, get 'em 'San Fran' style...
Go for happy hour or between 11-1 at night and they're half off.

The margarita's are the BEST thing about MAD MEX. The food is....alright. But it's not real mexican food. I suggest going to thier half off margarita's at 9PM-10PM and then walking down the street to a magical place called LA FIESTA where it's also half off dinners and you can get yourself some real mexican food.

Already done a review so I won't do another one. Just coming back to say how much I miss Pittsburgh and Mad Mex. To all you snotty CMU pricks from out west who hated Pittsburgh, I say bite my knob. I hope I get the chance to live in Pittsburgh again some day.
Mad Mex rocks. So sayeth the Lord.

Nice tap selection, dazzling bottle selection. The food is rather unique and is part of what keeps this place busy at all times, any day of the week. It's not exactly Mexican--rather, it's more accurately billed as "Cal-Mex." It's about time someone thought of it. Tex-Mex places are a dime a dozen around the country, and yet until now I've never seen any place acknowledge the distinct and equally important hybrid of Californian- and Mexican-style cuisine. The big-ass marguiritas are killer--don't get more than two unless you're a heavyweight.

For the one in the North Hills: One of the best selections of micro brews both in bottle and on tap, 20+ on tap. Mexican food is the menu, done with a slant on health (no refried beans just blackbeans!!) We love the bug burrito!!

These places reflect the people that go there, and vice versa. Each spot of the group represents our different personas. But basically its a lot of fun.
