Prices are too high. Appetizers start at $9.00. They do not have a hamburger on the menu!!! No Joke!!! Cannot enjoy a burger and a beer. This place is trying to be a upscale restaurant with a brewery. Service was slow. Waitress brought out two rolls for a table of six. We asked if she saw a potential problem or should we cut them up and share? She didn't get it. Beer selection is cool, but would not go back as they are trying to get you to buy steaks which all start around 23.95. I had the salmon dinner which was $19.00 and was nothing special. Left feeling like I was taken advantage of!!!! Go for a beer, then go out for dinner.

Excellent beer in a wide variety of styles. Wait staff generally very knowledgeable and usually happy to engage in discussion of beer and food. Appetizers outstanding; many are vegetarian. Atmosphere in the cavernous bar and restaurant area is very pleasant.
The cream stout and brown porter are excellent, with a slight edge to the stout. The most recent batch of Bavarian-style hefeweizen (summer 2009) was simply outstanding.
All around, one of Michigan's finest beer establishments.

We were a party of 16, 4 different family's. We waited over 2 hours for our food after the server told us that she forgot to put our order in. At no point were we offer free appetizers nor did a manager come to the table to apologize. One of us were interested in their 3 mini desserts and wanted them to be all the same and was told no. And than after waiting 2 hours some of the food came cold. Than after the server screwed up she had the nerve to add 18% tip to all the checks. Even though she sucked, she screwed herself because I always tip 20%. I've worked in the restaurant business for years and this is NOT the way to treat customers and if you add a tip to my check, I take that as an insult. Food was good and different but because of our our service, I will never go back.

Redwood Lodge was the GABF brewpub of the year last year. Their beer is unsurpassed, especially their seasonals. I recommend the Dortmunder, the American Dark, the Saison, the Ordinary Bitter, the Dark Mild . . . really, anything they brew is good. Always available is an excellent porter, sometimes on handpump.

Reply to comment that everyone there drinks Miller Lite...I am a new employee at the Redwood Lodge, visiting this site for insights into my new job. If the service is ever off, it's not because management doesn't care, as this is INTENSE training! But to the point: Redwood doesn't sell Miller Lite, nor any other bottled beer with the exception of "near beer." Prices are on par with Metro Detroit restaurants, with more personal attention. Come in and try it out!

I have been coming to Redwood for the past few years. I find thier beers to be clean and well made. The are generally traditional German and English style beers.
While they occasionally make a beer that is really malty or really hoppy, for the most part they are well balanced between the two.
I will continue to drink Redwood beers, especially during happy hour! If you are in Flint, it is worth a stop.

Rob, Get a grip.(or a life) It's about the beer and not you. Spelling? Is that all you got? You could not be more wrong on all of your assumptions. I expected no less.

I'm not sure what set Rob off, but I’ve been a home brewer for nearly 25 years. I also belong to a local brew club and have samples my share of micro brews over the years. Everyone in our club considers the Redwood Lodge to be above average. They always have a large selection of great beers many of which are dark and bold, so I’m not sure where this “yellow and fizzy” comment comes from. So if you’re in the Flint area stop by and see Joe in the Old Sequoia Lounge and try a sample of their beers. If you don’t like them you can move on with nothing lost. Another recent improvement is the addition of ½ off appetizers during social hour. They have great food and this is a chance to try some out on the cheap. I feel the Redwood has come a long way since they opened. There not perfect, I feel they should have a red beer as a regular and there food is not cheap, but it’s very high in quality. I do believe the Redwood doesn’t deserve all this negativity; I’ve met a lot of great people and had many good times there. Just my 2 cents

Dude, Redwood tottaly rocks, at best!
I was their too nites ago, or was it three, anyway I ordered a PBR but they were out of it so I ordered a Redwood lite. Whattaya no, they taste the same. Latter on I got a Pail Ale, and it tasted like the others too. What a greet place.
I met this dude their, his name was Jack or Adolf, I ferget, anyway, he is like supper smart. We drunk lots of reel good beers. But sometimes he gets reel angry. He kept goin behind the bar and yellin at people. It was like he worked there or somethin.
Later on he hit on me and I had to deck him. I love this bar. Yous shud come.
(See, anybody can write phoney reviews with several misspellings).

Perhaps you should attend a spelling workshop Adolph. All of your misspellings and rambling did little to strengthen your position, at best.
Also, why do you write reveiws under false monikers? The reviews written by "Adolph", and "Jack" (both of whom have written one whole review each) were obviously written by the same person. How do I know? It was the usage of the phrase "at best". You used it in both reviews.
Writing phoney reviews is a common practice used by some unscrupulous individuals who pollute pubcrawler looking to promote their own agenda, or vendetta. You were very defensive in both reviews, at best. It is more likely that you are somehow connected to Redwood Lodge. Pity that, most places have beer that speaks for itself.
I anxiously await your immediate denial, but your motives are obvious, to all of us who frequent Pubcrawler, at least have the balls to use your real name. Or better yet, just give it up.

Tell me Rob, What color is the sky on your home planet? Clearly you dwell on another plane of reality than the rest of us. Visiting X amount of brewpubs and writing 100 reviews clealy does not make you anywere near an expert on the subject as you say. It is you who should gain some"knowledge", perhaps a sensory analysis workshop would help.
PBR wone gold at the 2006 GABF and World beer cup and was judged by a panel of "experts" from around the world who are infinitely more qualified than yourself.Bad beer? Just because you don't like the style? I suppose the other brewers you mentioned who also enter and win awards in these very same competitions are exeptions to your rule. Ask them if a "bad" beer can win or if they hold their awards in high esteem.
Your flawed logic and self rightious attitude are both boring and unhelpfull at best.Together they render your opinions...Worthless

Hey, I'm not dissing a genius.
I have visited over 200 brewpubs, and written nearly 100 reveiws for pubcrawler. While that does not qualify me as a beer expert, I know a bad beer when I taste one. Redwood has bad beer.
Infected? Perhaps that is the wrong word to use. That is the word I always use when every beer at a particular place has the same off-tasting finish. Redwood beers have that taste.
Awards? Last year Miller, P.B.R. and Anheuser-Busch, all won awards at the World Beer Cup. Does this make their beer taste good? Uh, no. Awards don't make beer taste good. Redwood's beer tastes bad.
Jack, you need to get out and try the beers at Bells, Founders, Dark Horse, Arcadia, New Holland, etc., they are all near your area. Tell me if Redwood tastes anything like any of these breweries (don't start to lecture me about different styles).
Gain some experience and knowledge. Then you will be in a better position to attack the opinions of those who are more knowledgable than you.

That last review makes no sense to me. As a regular customer at Redwood:
- I have never experienced a "yellow, fizzy" beer. Redwood Light would be the closest, since it is the "training wheels" beer, but it does not come close to the fizzyness one gets from BudMillerCoors. - Infected? Since the new head brewer started at Redwood, I have never experienced an infected beer. - And to state that "every beer" is this way is, at best, being disingenuous. The reviewer had 2 beers, while Redwood has 6 regular beers, plus seasonals and cask-conditioned ales.
Redwood has won several awards for its beers at the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. Yet, these same brewers, brewing system, and beer delivery system managed to deliver "yellow, fizzy, infected" beer to the last reviewer. Yeah, right...

Sorry, this place blows.
Every beer has the same infected start, middle, and finish. The beer is yellow and fizzy and reminds me of Ram or Rock Bottom. The servers were really nice and made us feel at home as we chocked down two nasty beers.
If you go to Flint, don't stop, just get out!

On each of several visits we found the food of excellent quality if a bit pricey. The beer is better than the food. For a truly indulgent experience sign up for the Brewers dinner. Several courses paired with specific beers. 50 bucks but worth it!

Portion size equivalent to a child's meal. Waitress very nice, so I asked to speak to manager. Manager came over with an attitude "yeah?!" and he could have caredless. After we told him that we thought the portion size was unreasonable for 10.99 meal he told us we could get the dinner size for 15.99... Not even giving any notice to the 10 french fries on my husband's plate. He said "anything else?" with an attitude and we said "yeah, we won't be returning here ever again". He says "okay thanks" and walks away. Never in my life have I've seen such poor customer service.

Very nice place, lots of wood and mounted game on the walls. The beer selection was excellent, I think they had about ten on tap but I only tried two, the Brown Porter and The kolsch, both were very good and worthy of a second pint but I had to drive and being the responsible adult that I am I stopped with the two. I didn't eat but the ohters in the party did and said everything was great. It's a bit pricy but definately worth the stop when traveling up North.

Why is it that the 'Wait Staff' needs 'teams'. The waiter takes your order, a runner runs the food to your table, someone keeps your drinks filled and a busboy clears your table. All good in theory, except when you never see your waiter again after they take your order, your drinks sit empty for 10 minutes and when you go to the cigar bar for a smoke, you come back to your table and its semi-cleared with trash in the water glasses. Funny how Chinese restraurants can get it right without 'teams'.
Somehow, I feel like the love is not there when after ordering an overpriced $26, 10oz delmonico steak, a runner plops it down in front of you, not knowing what it was or how it was to be cooked.

I spent several hours in the Old Sequoia Cigar Room on the freeway side of the building. It's always nice to enjoy a good smoke with fine Michigan Beer. Bring your own sticks unless you want to pay an extreme mark-up! The Russian Stout was strong, smokey and warming. The cream stout was excellent and deserving of the GABF recognition. The winter lager was a nice change of pace from the ales with a great malt balance and a smooth and sweet aftertaste. The American IPA was average but in a state where there are several outstanding IPA offerings it is hard to measure up. Sadly the cask Vanilla Porter was out! The bartenders Joe and Sally were outstanding and filled with knowledge on the beers as well as their other potable offerings. Food was amazing but probably a little over-priced.

On a sojourn north, I stopped by and had three beers. Tried the Maple Porter, London porter and the Creme stout. All were true to style and very warming on a chilly winter day. Good freeway access. I will stop by again!

Went in on a week night and the service was very slow. I tried the sampler and the cherry stout and was not impressed by anything. The food was very pricey but good. Our waitress didn't seem to know much about the darker beers which was a big surprise. Overall, I'll stick to Arbor brewery

Stopped in once for dinner, the price was a bit high, but the food was really good. The bartender passed around a pizza for everyone to try, good pizza. I like dark beers and all I tried there were good. I swear I had a colored logo glass, but the ones for sale were white ink.
Hey, where is the guy from Lansing getting his growlers filled? Dragonmead and Big Buck are the only ones who fill any growler. Wish there were a "generic" growler (perhaps sponsored by the MI Beer Guild?) that all the MI breweries would honor. Also, it limits me bringing home out of state brews when I drive on vacation, their bottles are useless to me.
