Stub & Herbs has the best craft, tap, beer selection in Minneapolis - period. A couple years ago the bar revived itself as an establishment that focuses on quality beer (taps from Avery, Left Hand, New Belgium, Surly, Brau Brothers, etc). I don't even think they have a domestic premium on tap, which is particularily pleasing for me.

In the twenty years I've been coming here, Stub and Herb's has consistently maintained the best beer selection of any bar on campus, which is itself worthy of some admiration. It's true that the owner vigorously fought the smoking ban, but the place is now smoke free, so let's leave that episode in the past where it belongs. Aside from the cleaner air, the place has changed little, and has maintained its innate charm. A couple of areas cry out for repair, but the addition of a new patio last year tells me that those areas will soon be repaired. Besides, this is a college bar; if you're at all squeamish you'll be happy to know that Baker's Square and Applebee's are just down the street! The menu has seen several changes since the end of the '90s, but presently seems to accomodate most everyone, including budget-minded students and Golden Gopher athletics supporters. The bartenders and waitstaff are a sociable and sometimes downright friendly lot, and overall both service and food rank as average-to-very good. The place can get very busy during game time, and that can be a challenge to both staff and customers, but you'll experience a similar level of commotion and confusion elsewhere on campus, so roll with it if you can. As a regular I've enjoyed some great service in the past, but I'll say this much: the food should more closely approximate the quality of the beer that they offer. Call me a snob if you want, but I'm not talking New American or tapas, just a general upswing is all I'm asking, honest. There's a stunning list of shots for those looking to tempt fate, and there's a small selection of wine also, but this ain't exactly a wine-bar, either. Still, all in all, Stub and Herb's makes for a fun, casual, and well-above average campus bar and grill. It has loads more character than your average sports bar, and with several great happy hours every day it's well worth stopping in (or even making a special trip) to enjoy great craft beer from the likes of Rogue, Victory, and Summit, as well as new local favorites like Rush River, Flat Earth, and Surly.

Besides awful food, dirty tap lines and poor service, this place has the worst air in the Twin Cities--and fought to keep it that way by filing lawsuits to stop the Minneapolis smoking ban in bars. They deserve to go out of business.

As an alumnus of the U, I frequented Sterb's on numerous occasions. Returning years later, I am happy to see you can go home again. Excellent atmosphere and beer choices.

Between taps and bottles, over 100 different varieties, pictures from the past 100 years of Gopher athletics adorn the interior, plus great happy hour specials!
