This is a great place to drink beer and have dinner at the bar. They often have a group playing. Some are a bit off the wall and not at all Scottish or Irish. The beer selection is good with lots of on tap choices. The food is better than you would expect. I usually drink imports on tap but as usual at most pubs the beer are served too cold.

Royal Mile has become more of Gasto Pub integrating more creative food dishes with beers, wines and single malt Scotch!

I was having a lousy commute around the beltway and recalled that some of the regulars at Max's had recommended this place. I found it without too much trouble and had an extremely pleasant visit. The beer selection is pretty decent, the Scotch broth really hit the spot, and Jimmy was a very gracious host. Check it out sometime.

Good food, good service, and good atmosphere. I frequent often, though, the hostess greeted my guests with the typical "DC" attitude last Tuesday which I could do without. Otherwise, a great place.

To reply to Pat, I was there that night and to cook the Coq au Vin anymore would have ruined it. Sometimes, Beleive it or not when the temp of a didh is over 160 there is still some pink. Sorry for the ruin of your evening.

The fordham beers are a welcome addition, the "Coq du VIN" was undercooked, real pink and would not come off the bone, "he offered to "cook it to death" in a hostile tone". My wife leaft without eating, the tension ruined my night.

I would like to answer some of the criticism for closing for lunch on Monday-Thursday. We are open for lunch on Friday and Brunch and lunch on Saturday and Sunday! I am very involved with the redevelopment in the Wheaton Area as Chair of the Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee and I agonized over the decision to start opening at 3:30 PM on M-TH. I reviewed 18 years of records and studied the demographics of our community and based the decision on those studies. To stay in business one has to at least pay the bills. It would be great to be open all possible hours and when the redevelopment of Wheaton is truly on its way The Royal Mile Pub will open again for lunch. By the way, all it takes is a phone call to 301- 946-4511 and we will be glad to accommodate groups for their own private luncheon on M-TH. Ray Morrison, Proprietor

It's a "business is business" attitude that kills businesses and sends locals like us elsewhere. It isn't like Wheaton is crawling with restaurants or anything. It is however, crawling with people at lunchtime. Why the Royal Mile can't get business out of it is questionable. I can tell you this, I took my 15 office mates to Ferdinand's and the place was packed. Hmmmm? Go figure Royal Mile.

With due respect for the observation of the Carolinian (do you travel all that distance regularly to visit the Royal Mile Pub?), lunch time on all the occasions I visited the Pub over the past decade or so was nicely active. I do not have any feel for the profit and loss statement of the Pub, nor should I. I simply question the decision, relying on the reported change of management from the Proprietor to his son. There is a long tradition of pub 'hours,' traced back to the homeland of public houses. I hope we can develop our own traditions, balancing the need for income to be greater than expenses with meeting the expectations of the customers. I am personally saddened that the only times I can visit the Royal Mile now is during evenings.

I have been a fan of the Royal Mile since the day it opened. No corporate hype, no micro-wave food -- just pure goodness and fun served daily. To those who are upset because you can no longer get lunch at the Royal Mile, I ask you -- would you go to work every day and not get paid? If the business levels are there, lunch would be served. Those reviewers act like it was a personal attack -- business is business!!! I will save my appetite for dinner time!

I agree wholeheartedly with the last review. I attempted to take my office to the Royal Mile for lunch over the holidays and imagine my surprise when I was told they no longer served lunch or were even open during those hours. I took the business of 15 people elsewhere. Maybe these reviews will prompt a change of heart. Change for chnges' sake is destructive not useful.

A disappointment now in the new policy of being closed at lunch time. One of the delights of the Royal Mile Pub was dropping in for lunch. A policy of the son of the establisher, now taking over for his dad?

A quaint Scottish pub, with a fine assortment of beer and is a Scotch drinkers paradise. Good atmosphere and not one of the those trendy, noisy, crowded bars. The drinks and food were all first rate, however the service left much to be desired. At 11 pm (Sat) it seemed as though our waitress was more concerned about counting her tip money than providing us with quality service. We actually had to leave our table and go to the bar in order to get our drinks in a timely fashion. The table next to ours also had complaints with the service.
Also on the negative side...I think this place is more of a restaurant than a traditional drinking establishment. One third of the bar seating is unuseable because desserts are shown there. Also, it seems most of the clientele are there to eat instead of drink. The only dart board in the place was unuseable because tables for dining patrons were in the way. Personally, I would prefer a more limited dining menu and a more traditional pub to enjoy the fine drinks available.

I hope the Royal Mile stays a great undiscovered secret. I have been going here since 1983 and the place has been consistently good. Beer list and drafts have always been excellent; food is always terrific. I only take my really good friends there for a treat....why waste it on the rest.
PS. I travel regularly and hit as many microbreweries, brew pubs and beer bars as I can in my journeys. I always come back here knowing it's one of the best.

As Ale Cruiser has said...this place is so underrated. Anyone who enjoys a terrific pour of Guinness, a selection of drafts to die for and an authentic British Isles atmosphere must try this place. Live music some weekends makes this place one of my favorites too, and I have been all over the state of Maryland and most of the rest of the 49 others. Try this next time you are out in the suburbs and you'll never stray too far again.

The Royal Mile is one of those underrated places that gets lost in the new-better-different restaurant shuffle, which would explain the previous reviewer's observation that it has been previously ignored on these pages. The food is authentically Scottish, plentiful and inexpensive, and the Bass on draught is the BEST I have ever tasted. Then there are the dart tournaments, the live acoustic music and the friendly, homey wait staff to top everything off. My only complaint is that it's not closer to my house (say, for example, next door). This is one of my favorite all-time places.

Surprised that Royal Mile Pub has not yet been included in your listings. It is a friendly place with a fine assortment of draft ales, particularly, including Guiness Stout (sometimes not well drawn by younger barmen), a good assortment of food a bit above normal pub fare, reasonable prices, with single malt scotch tastings most Thursday evenings.
