This is a real Joynt, a real bar, and it should be made a landmark. Back in 1990 we got drunk and high with Timothy Leary in that bar. It was a night to remember.

I have spent many a night in the hole in the wall bar known simply as the Joynt. It's the only establishment I know of, bar or otherwise, that doesn't have a sign out front, which kind of leads to a "friends only" atmosphere; one must be introduced to the Joynt. It has it's own attitude. Other bars have neon out front advertising what it sells. The only neon in the Joynt is inside and proclaims what it doesn't sell. The extensive beer can collection, 600+ over the back bar, is in sharp contrast to the few local brews on tap. The music is interesting and varied, but not so loud that you have to yell at people standing next to you. It's a perfect place to have a conversation over a pitcher.

My father and I drove up to The Joynt while on a trip out from CA in '95 to visit a college I was thinking about attending in Chicago. He had gone to school in Eau Claire in the early 70s and had spent a considerable amount of time there. Upon walking into the bar (some 20 years since his last visit), the bartender called out, "Danny, where ya been?!" Needless to say, I was hooked.
The last time I was able to drop in was a few weeks ago. Again, we got a hearty welcome. Again, we got wonderful service, our share of memories, new friends and great beer. All this while I listened to some students behind me discuss quantum physics over a (perfectly low priced) pitcher of Leinie's.
I've been in The Joynt twice in eight years.. and already have been made felt as comfortable as a regular.
If only I lived a little closer..

My four-year tenure at UWEC brought many evenings (and days) at the Joynt. Where else can you get 65-cent taps, 4.65 pitchers, and 25-cent pool? A bar once ‘supposedly’ known for its artsy and culturally-diverse atmosphere has now dwindled down to yet another bar that remains complacent and keeps the place exactly the same year after year. Don’t let the locals talk you into believing that this hole-in-the-wall is a mirage from the other bars on Water Street. Extreme lack of square footage, design, clientele, and bartenders are just a few nuisances that plague this beer drenched, under ventilated ‘hot-spot.’ Only faded memories of a once well-known bar now exist at this location. Patrons will preach that the No-Light-Beer, ‘sophisticated music’ enriched jukebox, and historic drawings of well-known actors/musicians plastered on the walls give the Joynt an unforgettable atmosphere to enjoy the company the non-typical college crowd. Cheap drinks and non-meat-market are the only two worthy criteria that this bar possesses. Locals of this bar have been diminished to blue-collar, college dropouts – at best - who don’t fit in anywhere else in Eau Claire – or Wisconsin – or….. Unique versus Trash – you decide.

If you enjoy being around elitist snobs and psuedointellectuals who are rude and judgemental this place is for you. Some of the bartenders here treat it like it is studio 54. The only cool person there was jack hall.

The Joynt is all about atmosphere. The people, the space, the history - it's exactly the kind of bar you want to be a regular at. The clientele is artsy, all different ages, and the beer is cheap and diverse. Stay away Friday and Saturday, as it is shoulder to shoulder college kids, but every other night of the week this is the best bar I've ever been in.

I spent 7 days a week in The Joynt in 1993/94 when I was an exchange student. I'll never forget the pitcher I drank, the peanuts I ate and the people I talked to. The kind of bar Bukowski fans are looking for!

The Joynt has been around since the early 1970s. This tiny bar is and always has been the best drinking establishment in Eau Claire. The Joynt attracts the best of Eau Claire's intelligence, talent, charisma, wasted potential, decadence, wit, absurdity, and tolerance.
In the 1970s and 1980s, jazz and blues greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Koko Taylor, and Johnny Lee Hooker would stop at the Joynt in between their Minneapolis and Chicago gigs to play there. As a result, in the early 1980s USA Today ranked the Joynt as one of the top 5 jazz clubs in the country.
Alas, the performances are no more, but hundreds of pictures and autographs adorn the walls as a reminder of the Joynt in its heyday. Take a seat in the barber's chair, have a beer, and soak up the history. And if you drop your beer glass, be sure to pick up the big pieces.

Back in college, this is where I began my education in beer. They only had Leinie's products and Guiness on tap, but this was far more than some of the other college bars at the time. The "no light beer" sign is a classic. The unique atmosphere and clientelle make this a classic bar that is worth a stop.

The atmosphere's the thing here, as folks have said previously. I was last there about 3 years ago on a cold December night and had a very interesting time. Only a few beers on tap, but all quality and all local (Leinies, Grain Belt) but for Guinness. Great tin ceiling, pics of blues/jazz celebs on the wall. College crowd dominates, so go when classes are out (like I did). Not a great "beer bar" but a great bar experience.

The Joynt is a fantastic bar. It is filled with interesting people and good beer. It may be one of the only bars in the US if that does not serve light beer in any form. In fact there is a neon sign on the back bar that says "NO LIGHT BEER". If you are in Eau Claire be sure to stop in. There is no sign outside that says the name so you just have to find it be address or word of mouth.

One of the last real bars. Do yourself a favor. The Joynt will always be the yardstick by which all other saloons are measured to those of us in the know (far-flung or otherwise). Jamie Scholten Northampton United Kingdom

Has a good selection of imports and several of the regional brews. Has one of the most unique atmospheres of any bar I've been to. A must for anyone who may be swinging through the area.
