Looks like Michigan Brewing Company finally acquired the rights from Miller to brew the Celis brands! From the link below:
"With this acquisition, MBC now controls the rights to brew the highly-acclaimed line of Celis beers, originally formulated by a renowned Belgian brewing industry leader, Pierre Celis. MBC will immediately begin brewing authentic Belgian-styled beers in Michigan according to the recipes originally developed at Celis Brewery."

A great tour, with a tour guide who was passionate and knowledgable about beer (they're hiring, btw). One sample from each of eight taps, all but one of which were good or excellent. Celis Pale Bock (Ale outside of TX): low-hopped, dark amber color; TX law says "ale" must be more than 5% ABW. Celis Grand Cru & Dubel Ale: both excellent, though much too strong for my tastes. Celis White: defines the style for America; I never had it on tap before, and I liked it better than out of the bottle. Celis Raspberry: sweeter and fuller-bodied than most fruit beers, because it's based on the White. Pale Rider Ale: medium-hopped pale ale contract-brewed for Clint Eastwood. Lagniappe: well-hopped amber-colored west-coast style pale ale contract-brewed for Lagniappe (Louisiana). Pierre's Reserve: a corn-based golden lager from a Miller recipe, contract-brewed for the Paris Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas; the guide got it out of the way first.

The brewery tour should be on every beer drinker's to do list. The place is rather small for a brewery, but the tour is informative and the guides friendly. A sample tasting of all the beers made by Celis is included at the end of the tour. The Dubbel Ale that they served, though, was expired (I inquired because it tasted a bit stale) and when they checked the date, they honestly admitted that a new keg should have been tapped. For the perfect experience, take the 4:00 PM Tour Saturday (you'll leave with a buzz) and follow it up with a trip to Sixth Street.

We missed the tour by 5 minutes but were rushed in to see the remainder of the tour. The tour guide was very friendly, we spoke about many different microbrews from throughout the country. Merchandise was cheap. The Pale Rider is a great beer, not much on the raspberry. Grand Cru is strong but smooth.

This is not your father's beer. MGD, Bud, and even Redhook fans probably won't appreciate Celis beers, but they are very good. They brew a "Pale Bock" that is actually a Pale Ale, but so named because of Texas' archaic laws. The brewery is clean and a great place to visit. My personal favorite is to mix Grand Cru and Celis Raspberry 50%-50%. The sum is better than the parts.

Celis beers are not for the uneducated palet. They are, however, outstanding beers in the classic Belgian style. The Grand Cru is delicious, but incredibly potent. The wheat beer is among the best I've had. The Trappist style is also a winner.

Celis is an excellent brewery with excellent beers (mostly) and excellent tours. I particularly favor the Raspberry, White, and Dubbel; they often remind me of my educational visit to Belgium.

For those who like Belgium-style beers, Celis beers are a good choice. Though they tend to run a bit sweet, they have a great flavor and offer a good variety of brews for the public.
Besides, the Celis Brewery (Austin, TX), is a GREAT place to hang out. They offer brewery tours twice daily, and these include some tasting of the brews. After four tours, I have YET to encounter a tour-guide who was anything less than pleasant. Overall, the visit to the brewery was very fun, and very informative.

Celis is a love or hate thing I think. I've been in and out of Belgium a lot so I like these beers. I WISH their raspberry was tarter like a lambic...but those are tough (I've tried making them myself). Their white is at least as good as the Hoegaarden or Blanc de Bruges I've had over there. Don't care much for their pale bock...a little too underhopped.

The beers are pretty much run-of-the-mill. The raspberry ale was the worst "beer" I've ever tried. It was too sweet, and should be classified as a wine cooler or some other flavored "brew", the raspberry flavor was too overwelming.

Your Raspberry Ale has saved my relationship with my fiance. She did not understand my search for the perfect beer. After her first eyes closed, nose pinched, and ready to spit sip of your raspberry ale. . . she now understands my search. Of course her search is over and my fridge is always stocked with your ever pleasant, smooth to the palate, aftertaste-free hint of raspberry cleverly hidden in a well mastered brew. Thank you very much.
