I think Bennos Is by far the best bar and grill in West Allis. How can yiu beat it They have the most selections of food then any bar and grill I have ever been to that was family owned they got more creative things then Applebees. Marty and Suzy are great to I know first hand I worked their 5yrs I went their when I was 13 and I joined the military at 18 and every time I come to visit WI I stop in bennos.

Hhmmm. Let's try and make this balanced and fair. Marty is a fine proprietor, and I've always enjoyed talking to him. Nice, and knowledgeable. He cares. His wife Suzanne has a really nasty disposition. The next time I see her smile will be the first time. She kind of acts like she's doing you a favor just for letting you come in. Not cool.
For a place that claims (fairly) to have a fine selection of beer, you'd think they'd keep their web site up to date. "Our beers", under construction. "Menu", under construction. Not the best way to encourage visitors.
Way, way too smoky. People smoke like an old tramp steamer, but it was no go when I tried to enjoy a $20 cigar. If you know cigars, a quality smoke is not odoriferous. They should allow cigars, but only quality ones. That's the policy at Vnuk's in Cudahy.
Service is uneven at best. However, Kelly the bartendress totally rocks. She knows your drink, is always personable, serves you promptly, and can recommend a new beer to you. Can't say enough good thinks about her.
I'd give it a 6 or 7 on a 10 point scale. Depends who is working.

It's bad form to rate your own place. It's particularly bad form to disparage potential customers who might not find the exact perfect atmosphere they're looking for. Most people will make some concessions if the place has enough decent attributes, but not if the waitstaff has an attitude like the one below.

As a bartender at Benno's I am one sided. Of course I think it's the best bar in town! I do understand the complaints about service, but come on. We're not all bad! I've got lots of regulars who come in to drink great beer and see me! It's a comfortable atmosphere and if you're friendly, we're freindly. Marty is doing the people of the area a favor by actually putting thought and effort into serving the best beer around. He knows what he's doing! If you can't find something you like, go to a martini bar or go to Water Street and have a Long Island. That's not us. We are local and friendly, anyone who says differently doesn't belong there anyway!

Been here a bunch of times, most recently in Jan 06. As in the past, there were 30 beers on tap this last time, including at least 3 pale ales - including 3 Floyds Alpha King - a couple of Belgians, a German dunkel weiss to satisfy my wife, and New Glarus Belgian Red to keep me happy. I don't understand how the last 2 reviews can objectively rate the beer selection as merely "good." If Benno's beer selection is only "good," maybe these people can give us a list of 10-15 places where the beer selection is better. We didn't eat, and the bar was too smoky, but our bartender was remarkably efficient. Benno's is one of the ten best beer bars in Wisconsin.

Why would anyone think this place was good? I hated it! Went for a fish fry, left pissed off! Worst fish ever! I would rather have had a fish sandwich from McDonald's! I wish I could undo my experience at Benno's! Eat at Benno's at your own risk! If you like over breaded, over cooked, flavorless fish maybe you'll like it, but I doubt it!

Still a good place to go for a burger or a fish fry, but it gets louder and smokier every year, and it's clear that what was once a haven for beer geeks is now just another hangout for drunk 20-somethings...not that there's anything wrong with that...But you shoulda seen this place 10 years ago!

I agree with the last reviewer. Not beer heaven but certainly approaches. Any place that has either New Glarus Belgian Red or Raspberry Tart always on tap is outstanding in my book. Very eclectic nice selection available. 3-floyd alpha king to Warstiener. I tried a beer I had been dying to try and they had it on tap. Grant's Mandarin Orange Wiezen. The bartender served it with an orange slice even though I was clearly a beer geek. I told him no thanks to orange and he got a little miffed and chucked in the trash and muttered something about it being an orange beer. I should have ordered it w/o initially I guess. Worth the effort to get to if your in Milwaukee.

I just moved into Benno's neighborhood a few months ago. The beer selection is awesome for a neighborhood bar! 30 good taps & tons of bottled... not worthy of a beer-geek pilgrimage, but even the geeks can be pleased. Yes, the service is marginal but that's no big deal! Most of the bartenders look like playmates after a couple of tripels anyhow... Good beer & bad service or good service & bad beer, you make the call. Benno's far exceeds "above-average beer-joint" status and if placed anywhere else in Wisconsin would be dubbed "bier nirvana".

As a customer turned bartender turned customer again, I am a bit biased, but everyone here knows their stuff. John rocks the kitchen, anything cajun is some of the best around. And in defense of Doug: he's a good guy, bartender and if he wasn't paying attention to you, then you'd probably had too much already!

Benno's is a place I frequent. Great Friday fish fry's and also good appetizers and sandwiches. Sometimes the service can be somewhat inconsistent. Great Beer selection.

nice clean place. kind of dark sometimes,plenty of diffrent beers, they used to have a around the world beer club don't know if they still do or not. Most excellent fish frys,highly recommended

While the selection is good, the service is awful. If you don't mind waiting 20 minutes to get a beer when the place is dead, Benno's is your bar. There's one server in particular, Doug, who turned my opinion of Benno's completely around. I used to love the place. I'd eat fish fries there and stop in for an occasional beer. After dealing with this particular bartender, however, I will never visit Benno's again and encourage you not to as well. Rude, insulting and crass are just three words that sum up his behavior. He spent more time flirting with two unnatractive singles than he did "tending bar". I live in the neighborhood and wish that it wasn't the case. Nice bar, horrible service sums it up. Don't go!

Benno's has one of the best beer selections in Milwaukee, yet it seems to be a neighborhood bar as well. Not everyone there appreciates the beer selection--many go for food or just for a lesser beer after work. The management (and most of the bartenders I have come in contact with) know their stuff--Belgian ales are poured in the proper glassware and they often have promotions for specific brewers that they feature.
