Since 2006 owner Ron has continued to upgrade his menu. Now I'd nominate the Minocqua Brewing Co. the best menu in town. Fresh, imaginative salads; well-prepared fresh fish; ambitious daily specials; great carrot cake to finish.
Beers were also very good, but no real IPA and no cask-conditioned ales. However the Wild Rice beer was very interesting - tasted a bit like sake. And the Brewmaster's Special, an Oatmeal Stout, very delicious with that Carrot Cake.
And if you're cross-country skiing out at Minocqua Winter Park west of town (arguably the best XC area in the midwest) they serve MBC beers in the Chalet!

Being under new ownership and the brewmaster self admittly new....the IPA was very very good and they had a seasonal that was fantastic. The food is not your typical pub food. The burgers are more of a gourmet meal. There could be more selections but this is a new establisment and they just need more time to settle in. With that said I will make this the only place for food and beer when I am in Minoqua. Oh yea the ambiance is comfy and the owners are nice and easy going, and that is reflected in the way the pub is operated.

It has a nice atmosphere, everybody is nice, and has a great since of humor, and at most are outgoing. You will like the food, very flavorful, it has it's own uniqueness, it's not the same as before, same building but totaly different menu , the menu has great choices, but don't have anything before you go there or you may need a box to take it with you. It's rich looking dinning room of reds and gold set off a great feeling of a classy place and yet warm place to enjoy with family or friends. I really enjoy going there and you will to when you have experienced the menu and brew and staff as well.

This is a comfortable place, but in comparison to other Badger State brewpubs, the quality and selection of beers here is at best average. The food menu, on the other hand, is creative and what we tasted was really well prepared. Service at the bar was terrific; in the dining room it was slow and inattentive. All in all, the new ownership seems to have improved things considerably.

The brewery has undergone some dramatic changes since new owners have purchased the building. The old owners did nothing to restore the business after a fire caused the brewery to close. The beers are brewed with the same recipes, but the menu, atmosphere, and service are completely different. I encourage everyone to give the Minocqua Brewing Company a second chance, and if you are not fully satisfied with your experience, please inform one of the owners (yes they are always there) and they will do whatever they can to make your next visit more pleasureable.

I was in the brewpub in the summer of 2004. Never had any food, the service was so bad. Just tried it again and it is a whole world of different; the food, the beer, the service are all the best!

Yep, confirmed new ownership and management. My tireless badmouthing of Minocqua Brewing officially ends, and I am now willing to give them another try next time I'm in the area.

"To The Enemy: Who are you anyway? It's one thing to slam a business' products and services when it's up and running. Kicking them when they are down following a fire is quite another. How did you become so spiteful?" Well Mr. Boston, if the snotty little bitch of a waitress had said about your wife what she said about mine, within clear earshot of our party, and management made no attempt to make amends, you might be a bit spiteful too. I almost never hold a grudge against some place where I had a bad experience but this is one exception. I don't care if the place just suffered a goddamned China Syndrome meltdown, much less a kitchen fire. Until I see some indication that it is under different ownership/management, I will badmouth it relentlessly. And except for Lundis himself, I don't care who bellyaches about the ensuing flame war.

This place is closed for repairs due to a fire. We were told locally that it had been reopened but this was far from being true. Lots of work going on. Really nice location in a park like setting, by a lake. Check before you waste your time coming here, like we did.

The Enemy is one of the greatest beer snobs of all time. You don't believe me? Click the little folder next to his name and read his reviews. This guy knows what he's talking about. And although I've never physically been to the Minocqua Brewing Company, I'm weary of paying a visit due to the reviews I've seen in here, and I must confess, I've tried three of their beers at the local brewfest, but can't say I was really impressed. The Wild Rice Lager was simply no good. I tried the Holiday Special Ale, "brewed with real maple syrup", couldn't taste any maple syrup at all. The Pale Ale, on the other hand, was decent, had a nice Cascade hop bite. But based on the average of the three, I wasn't very impressed overall, so I'll take The Enemy's word for it on the rest. Probably not worth my time to visit.

Mr. Weekend says, "The only thing I can rate as consistent for this place is the location. Good thing they can't change that." Hey, who knows. Maybe they'll have to change locations after all, as their current place suffered substantial fire damage. Probably the best thing that ever happened to it. Good riddance. :P

My fiancee and I were here last weekend, and cannot understand the awful reviews. The place is definetley not outstanding, but not was also definetly not horrible. We both had the Pale Ale, which was decent. I had the Catfish entree which was terrific, and while my fiancee's fried perch left a lot to be desired, there was plenty of my food to share. They do not have cheese curds, which we were promised in a local advertisement, but were told they were coming back. Alas, we also heard that the place caught fire a day or two after we were there, so I guess there future is up in the air.

The servers I saw were real busy, but then there were only two of them. I had the Rye Porter: Good Porter, didn't taste any rye. I also had a Nut Brown: fairly good. My wife had the Peach Wheat: She thought it was good, I thought it was definetely Peachie (which IMHO, should not be). Most of our party thought the food was good. I had a greek chicken sandwich on Focacia bread. The only thing is that the Focacia bread looked really similar to a hamburger bun, so much so that I called it a hamburger bun. I usually buy a tee shirt from the establishements I go to and this was no exception. However, they had a limited number of XL, and they were rather expensive ($20). I usually have a problem with paying a lot of good money so that I can walk around as free advertisement for someone else. I'll go back, but mainly because we vacation up in this area of upper wisconsin and it's the only brew pub around (captured audiance wearing free advertisement).

With the many critical reviews of this place, I did not have very high expectations of Minocqua Brewing Co. But our experience on a recent weekday was OK. We did lunch and both beers that I had were solid – the respectable red ale and the amber-colored wild rice lager (a former GABF winner), which had a sweet, nutty taste like I might expect in a brown ale. My companions chose somewhat lighter beers. We returned later in the afternoon and did the entire beer sampler so that we could try them all. Other choices included a light honey ale, and amber light, an appropriately hopped pale ale, and a decent rye porter that was not quite as complex in flavor as the menu promised. I even saw a couple of Minocqua’s Island City beers in six packs in a liquor store in Rhinelander. This is not an outstanding brewpub, but ours was not a terrible experience as others have described. And it does have a great setting overlooking the lake.

The only thing I can rate as consistent for this place is the location. Good thing they can't change that. I agree with the many who find this place an enigma..either good or awful. I, too cannot fathom why you can't get the Wild Rice beer, and can't believe the rudeness of their staff. Maybe they're all from Chicago ;-)

I guess the stunod 2 reviews below didn't notice that a large chunk of the bad reviews -- accurate reviews, in my estimation -- came from people who live in Wisconsin. Whine about us IL tourists all you want; without us, your state would be dead broke. We don't want people to bend over backwards for us when we come up to visit; we just want to be served a beer that doesn't taste like horse's ass. Thankfully, there are a number of breweries and brewpubs in Wisconsin that can accomodate such a reasonable request. Unfortunately, this place isn't one of 'em.

Well the lady that wrote the last review sure has a bug in her butt about folks from Illinois!Iam from IL. Chicago to be exact and we have many of the best brewpubs in the country,so I Know of what I speak when I say M.B.C. is a very poor brewer of beer, and lets talk service.....They dont know the meaning of the word! Over priced under hopped poorly brewed beers hurt everyone in the beer business...I wont be back..Oh and to the guy that called himself the GM...learn to run the front of the house...then go upstairs and slap your brewer!!!!!

My parents own a lake home in St Germaine, and at least four times a year my friends and I will visit. Every time we come up we stop at the Minocqua Brewing Company, we even make a vacation out of Beer Fest they host annually in January. I have read all of the reviews and I am really disappointed in some people. This is a great restaurant with a great staff, great beer and good food. The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff is a lot of fun, they crack jokes, they join your conversations and they really make you feel at home. Since I grew up in WI and only moved to IL four years ago, I can understand why such bad reviews came from the residents in IL. IL people are just plain rude and they want to you cater to their every need, if they don’t have their piss-beer with their meal then they think that its not good beer, well I have news for you, the Minocqua Brewing Co. has really good beer and its a great place to hang out with friends. If you're a family, looking for good family dining and a kid-friendly wait staff, why would you take your screaming brats to a brewery...think about it! The wait staff shouldn’t have to deal with screaming kids and neither should the other people in the restaurant. If you don’t like to hear swear words then don’t sit near our table, it’s a brewery not Bakers Square. We don’t go there to make sure that stuck-up people are having a good time; we go there because we know that WE will have a good time. Anyway, we will be up again this January for beer fest!

Like the review before this one I also have found MBC to be spotty at best, and like many of the reviews, I have found the beer to be just poorly made! Why do some brewpubs just jump ahead and start making beer before they learn to brew? As for the "brewmaster" I had a chance to talk to him.He had NO brewing background and very little knowledge of the craft! Get him out of the brewhouse before he ruins another beer! And just a note to the wise...the red ale was so stale 5/30/03 that it should not have been on tap!

This is the best example of a hit or miss place I have ever seen. As a frequent visitor to Minocqua, I have been to this place 10-15 times and every time I have been there, I have had a different experience running I honestly think that I could have written every one of these reviews myself. This is the most erratic restaurant I have ever been to.
First off, the beer. Most of the time they have good beer. In the early days under old ownership the beer was pretty poor, but nowadays there are some gems. The Rye Porter and the Pale Ale are great. The others are pretty average, no standouts but no crap either. I really enjoy their Award Winning Wild Rice Lager too; however you usually cannot buy it at the brewery (you can get it anytime at Trig’s, a local supermarket). The last 3-4 times I have gone in there, I have asked for a Wild Rice Lager and they usually say that they don’t have it at the restaurant. WHAT?? You have your award winning, delicious, unique beer and you don’t actually carry it at the brewpub? That is the stupidest thing I have ever herd of. At least have some bottles of the stuff on hand. It is extremely frustrating to go into a place where they display and tout their award for this beer and then find out that they don’t have it on tap or in bottles. There are also times when the beer is obviously stale and I had the same experience as one reviewer. I told them that it tastes skunky and I was told “that is how it is supposed to taste.” What a joke. I know what good beer is supposed to taste like and it is not supposed to taste like a 2 week old bar rag.
The service I have received there is mixed. Sometimes the bartenders and waitresses are great, pointing out beers that they enjoy or new offerings, other times they flat out suck. I asked a bartender what a certain type of beer was like she answered, “I don’t know, I hate this kind of beer. I drink Miller Lite.” Another big problem I have is their hours. Sometimes I will try and go in there at 9:30 and they will give you attitude because they want to close. It is like you are putting them off by coming in after 9. The other thing I don’t quite understand is that they have this huge bar area upstairs and I haven’t seen that area open in 3 years.
I guess I could sum this place up pretty easily: Talented brewmaster, horrible management and marketing, crappy employees.
I will say something about the employees; this attitude is not exclusive to MBC. You will find the same attitude throughout Minocqua in the summertime. There are tons of spoiled college kids working up there for the summer who only care about making enough money to water ski, get drunk, and hook up.

Ouch!I guess that Iam not the only one that had a bad time at this brewpub! It seemed that during my visit, everything was off,the beers seemed old and flat. The service was not only slow but our waitress did not even know about the beer that were on tap!And for the first time in a brewpub I ended up ordering a Miller because the pubs own beers were so bad!

Looks like "The Enemy" may want to take a chill pill. This site is about people posting their comments. Find another place to rant and rave. Maybe someone offended you. Tough beans! Use your mean spirit crap somewhere else. I like this site too much to see it "bummed out". Merry Christmas

"How sad that a employee that was fired can continue to have bad reviews placed here" Look, dillknob. The place sucks. I don't work here, never have, never will. I don't need to invent personalities to say that this place sucks. I'm pretty outspoken on this website and I can't be bothered to shield myself from criticism. The people who have come before and after me who say the place sucks elephant balls do so of their own volition. As I've stated before, my original review was far more gentle than many that came before and after. As for the MBC defenders who are too incredulous to believe the place sucks, you're a bunch of gaylords. If you like it, give it your return business. Those of us who don't will continue to warn the rest of the beer-drinking public that this place is a toxic waste dump worthy of nomination for Superfund appropriation.

Heading to the U.P. for some sking we almost missed Minocqua Brewing, its very hard to see from north bound Rt.51.but I can smell hops&malt. It was a Thursday afternoon and business was very slow my wife and I our kids and maybe 3 other couples,We had some apps.that were good but not great,we had a pale ale,and what they call there red ale.The P.A. was ok but the red had an old stale sherry flavorI don't think thats what they want.Of the many fine brewpubs in Wisconsin this one would be low on my stop again list.

Minocqua the town , is the Wisconsin Dells without the Dells(hohum). And Minocqua Brewing is a brewpub without a clue.Like one of the other reviews said the place was cold(not just the server)but the temp.whats the deal with not turning up the heat it really takes away from ones meal if you have to eat with your coat on.The food was ok,nothing to write home about, but the beer was very poor,we talked to the brewer and could tell from his lack of brewing knowledge why the beer was so off.I guess to wrap this all up I have to say that all in all Minocqua Brewing just does not make it,I only wish there was a bypass around the whole town,so I could get to the Boulder Beer Bar faster.

This place really does suck! And who told the bartender to talk like a truck driver. This is supposed to be a family place! All through our meal we had to hear her swear in a very loud voice,it made everyone in our group feel very uncomfortable. As for the food it was poor run of the mill fried stuff, and the beers were just sad(ICK).I guess I don't have to say this, but we wont be back!

WOW!! Looks like I have been missing the fun,but maybe my insight will add something to the fire(LoL).I duck hunt in the Minocqua area each year and have stopped at MBC many times.I can say this.....The beer quality has really gone down in the last year,so much that we now spend our money at other bars around town.Service was NEVER good, but you can over look somethings if others are ok.The only positive change that I have seen ,they cleaned the floors, which were sick in the past.My advise....spend your money someplace else!

Well Harry, if I ever stop by this place, I'll let Pubcrawler readers know what I think of it. And unlike some thin-skinned folks around here, I won't give a damn if you think I'm an ass or not. Fair enough?

All right people, knock it off. This is supposed to be a beer review site, not a flame war. The Enemy: If you can't handle getting flamed now and then, maybe you shouldn't post on the internet. It's part of the deal. Just shrug and move on or else you get petty little bickerfests like this one. Hop Head Harry: If you can't handle other peoples' opinions, maybe you shouldn't be reading a website devoted to collecting and displaying peoples' opinions. Now, can we knock this crap off and move on to beer reviews?

Furthermore, 2 other people gave this place the same overall rank as I did, and six gave it a worse overall ranking. So what the hell are you people bitching at me for? With such a high percentage of people giving it unfavorable marks, maybe I'm on to something. And as long as you're attempting to divine my taste in beer, why don't you try reading some of the other 50+ reviews I have posted on this site. That'll make the task somewhat easier.

"Maybe the enemy works For Budweiser and is afraid he is going to lose his job because there is a much better beer out there.......or maybe he's just an ass." Or maybe there's just a few cocknozzles out there who are too narrow to recognize that one's motive for writing a bad review is nothing more than having been served bad beer and given bad service. Maybe they're too dumb to realize that peoples' tastes and experiences differ. Is one not allowed to give a bad review around here without being accused of being an ass, or immature, or possessing some other malign intention? Sure there's better beer than Budweiser out there. Too bad it won't be found at this place.

"The enemy must be the guy they fired . HMM how immature." Or maybe I'm just a guy who has never lived anywhere near Minocqua, much less been employed there, who had a shitty experience at a shitty brewpub. Moron.

I used to own a brewpub,so I guess you can say that I know alittle about how the whole thing works. At Minocqua brewing the food is OK,but the menu is so mixed up that it shows that they just don't have any direction. As for the beers they just don't make it.A brewpub should be a fun place with great beer,if you lack one or the other you miss the mark and Iam afraid you have missed both.Learn to smile ,and learn to brew, its just that easy!

I went to this place last Memorial Day. Don't ask me why I waited so long to write a review. I remember the beers being marginal; one stood out as being pretty good... some sort of red ale, I believe. What really cheesed me was the fact that it was 55 degrees that weekend and they refused to turn the heat on. "It's almost June, what do you need the heat for?" How about because it's barely above 60 goddamn degrees in here? Does the heat have a seasonal switch on it that prohibits it from being turned on after May 15th or something? Idiots. Not only did the waitress keep screwing up our orders, but on top of that she had a f*&king attitude so bad I practically had to beg my wife not to smack her. We stiffed her when it was tip time -- only the second time in my life that I've stiffed a server. If I could have demanded she pay us for enduring her crappy service and sassy mouth, I would have. When we walked out we were accosted by punk wannabes (almost nothing is funnier than punked-out little Northwoods mopes with green mohawks) who insisted to everyone within earshot that "Minocqua sucks." Thanks for the tip you little shmoes. At least the food was good.

I understand that Laber Day weekend is busy time in Minocqua, but is it time for rude service? We came to Minocqua Brewing Co. on 9/1 at around 5:30 we were told that the wait would be aprox. 30 min. We ordered some beer's(which were poor at best)after 45 min we asked again about our table ,the girl said that we must have heared her wrong and that the wait was 60min. She then said calm down!Well I won't wait 60 min.for bad beer and poor service, and I will not CALM DOWN!!!!!!!!!

We Visited the Boulder Junction area a few weeks back for Musky Days, But we stayed in Minocqua. We were there for 4 nights and Found this Fantastic Place not far from our hotel. Brews were superb and the Bartenders and Waitress staff was among the friendliest people we had the pleasure of meeting in this part of the country. We don't get to this area often but I certainly would return to this establishment if I should visit Minocqua again!!!

We are in restaurant management, and so we understand what restaurant workers go through. We were very impressed with how nice the staff was, and how happy they seemed to be - laughing, joking with each other and the customers. In talking with our bartender, we found out that she is the general manager, so we were surprised to see her behind the bar in a bartender position. She was funny and polite, and answered all of our questions. We will definitely be back!

I was at this brewery about three years ago and I thought that they had some of the best beers in the United States,(and a G.A.B.F. gold to prove it.)I brought friends in on Aug 11th 2001 and WHAT a change! The bar service sucked (to be kind) And the beer was just plain bad.Little or no head.off flavors, and what I feel was really poorly brewed beer. When we complained the bartender said we must not know "real beer".Get real!!If you think you can get by with bad beer, think again, and if you think service like we received is OK,Think again!

If you are going to charge over $4.oo for a pint, the beer had better be special, yours is not! The Co2 levels were off,as were the flavors.Your service was a joke! Its places like this that give the whole micro brewery world look bad.

This place must be about to close down, they had only 3 beers on tap. When I asked about ther award winning wild rice lager the bartender said they dont make it anymore! The place just lacked fun.The employees sat at the end of the bar and talked to themselves and forgot about the three of us sitting at the bar,I had to walk over and ask for another round. If you don't want people to stop in put up the closed sign, and if the bartender wants her tips....look up the meaning of customer service!

Had the porter and the seasonal Irish Stout. Both were very good. The stout was nitrogen dispensed and heavier bodied than some stouts, which I liked. The porter had some nice chocolate tones, smooth full body and a nice finish. Both were served too cold which I found out comes from only one storage area so all the beers are served at the same temperature. Food was OK, not great but the service was outstanding. Our waitress really knew about the beer and offer some good suggestions.

We tried the Stout and found it to be very good. The bartender was very friendly and made the visit enjoyable. I am sure this place will be around for many years to come. Great location on the lake and the atmoshpere was pleasant. A must stop if you are traveling to the Northwoods.

This is a nice addition to the northwoods beer scene (led by the Boulder Beer Bar). I only had the pale ale, which was very good. The selection was a bit thin, and the atmosphere was muddled. (Banners of the Badgers, Packers, Bears, Vikings and NASCAR? Come on--pick a theme.) In spite of this, a good start for a decent brewpub.

This 1927 building on the island of Minocqua is a great place to drink a beer! It's also the first brewpub that I have seen that lets folks walk into the brewery and talk to the brewer which is neat for the homebrewer & beer lover!
