This is NOT a beer bar by any stretch. Since that is what this site is attempting to locate, the high marks are not deserved. The commoner liquids served in beer bottles and pint glasses are in abundance. There are a couple of beginner crafts: Guiness (the ever ubiquitous), Flying Fish, Brooklyn Lager (which I doubt they would even have a clue about the depths of brew by Garrett). Clearly they just added a couple of names that everyone knows.
Food is bar grub, nothing more. I had the pastrami sandwich which was edible. There was a burger special (bleu) on a special board which I didn't notice until after I ordered as some folk were standing in front of it, and there was no mention of it on the menu.
Some of the customers were downright rude. Multiple patrons would think nothing about banging into me while I am sitting and eating because they wanted to talk to someone else at the bar. The bar was not crowded and there was plenty of space for them to stand outside of the person they wanted to speak to. One of them wanted my napkins and reached his hand in front of me while I was eating and snatched them. I asked for the check.
Bar staff did seem reasonably attentive.
Look. I have to agree with the comments that this is clearly a let your hair down kind of place. Worn wood floors and a definite lived in appearance. If you don't really care what your drinking beer-wise, and want a place to go out with friends where no one will give you a second look for cackling at the top of your lungs, this is your place. If you want a good beer selection, and customers that exhibit some modicum of manners, I would suggest going elsewhere.

Tierney's Tavern is a wonderful down to earth place to go and have a good time. It really is "where friend's meet." The food is excellent pub food. They have limited tasty menu. I enjoy the upstair where you can hear a varity of really talented local musicains, actors, and comedians, to the downstair where I can just enjoy a pint, good food and good friends.

A place to be with friend, drink, and be merry. Food is great "bar" food. As a sit down restaurant, not sure. Have a second floor for live music, and quality bands play there. Great atmosphere, good prices, great beer, live music, great bar food.....why did I leave? :)

I don't know about the beer selection because I only order "the black wine of Dublin" - their perfectly poured Guinness. Their kitchen is tiny and serves basic pub food but their burgers can't be beat at 5 times the price. No one makes as good a burger as Tierney's - and the fries & onion rings are good too. It's filled with people who all know each other and have been coming there regularly. Upstairs they have music of various types depending on the night, all good. It's the ideal neighborhood pub, a family run business, run by generations of Tierneys since it was a speakeasy in the Prohibition era!

As an Irish Pub Crawler from Buffalo NY I find that the only place that I want to hoist a few is Tierney's in Montclair. If you haven't tried it you are missing a great evening.
