Classy place, excellent beer! The smoked meat can be smelled from the parking garage - delicious! Greta calamari served with jalpeno jelly plus a remoulade dip. Get the beer sampler and try all the beers. None were disappointing.

Perhap NC has some holdover blue law that requires the beer to be watered down. The Pale had a hint of hops. I expect an oatmeal stout to be almost chewable. The one I had here had the consistency, and flavor, of a cola. The flavor of both beers was gone the instant I finished swallowing. I didn't finish either.

Located in an old power plant, lots of old memorabilia inside, kind of neat. 6 taps on when I visited. The Blonde Light and the Blonde were very bland, basically two of the same beers, just one more watered-down than the other. Railroad Red was very sweet, but the Downtown Brown was even more so. If the Pale wasn't spoiled, then it was a new take on the notion of Pale Ale. Barmaid even poured off the tap and gave me a another sample--pfretty much the same. Ugh! The Almond Stout was palatable, nutty and only slightly sweet. Hops were nonexisitant in all of their beers; all of them leaned heavily toward sweet. Ovrall not a pleasant experience.

Since my wife & I dislike the very light offerings brewpubs feel the need to provide in order to accommodate the timorous palates of Bud drinkers who wander in, we could give only a "great" rating to the overall beer quality. Beginning as always at the light end of the 8-beer sampler our hostess served up, we agreed immediately that our sips of Blonde Light were so awful we wished we could have spat them out. Our revulsion was so vehement, we were hastily given a replacement-- happily, a second serving of Downtown Brown--with an excellent, complex, nutty flavor. The next light beer, Southern Blonde, was marginally drinkable (although we never would choose to do so), and evidently appeals to many locals. (As we sat at the bar, a non-microbrew drinker came in and asked to taste the two lightest beers, ultimately choosing the Blonde Light along with a glass of house white wine for his companion. The wine had more color than the beer!! Southend's Wheat was better than many; the Railroad Red very good for a red and the Powerhouse Pale quite flavorful, but then we came to the great beers: an awesome almond stout (not overpoweringly almond, unlike some of that genre we have tried), and the brewer's seasonal, Frostbite. This was our overwhelming favorite; we agreed it should be a regular fixture, as it was incredibly delightful: wonderfully hoppy, smooth, and delicately flavored. We enjoyed the very noticeable variety of Southend’s beers; we have sampled beers at some houses that were boringly similar in flavor, or having the same, not necessarily happy, aftertaste. We look forward to a return visit!! Oh, yes: we each had a pizza, which arrived rapidly, and we enjoyed very much.

I've been to Southends before and have found all of them middle of the road in all respects. This one is in a great area of the community. Decent place to stop bye.

Most of the bad reviews seem to be from many years ago, so I am guessing they have turned around. I like most of their brews. My bartender friend there tells me that soon their brewmaster, who is also the brewmaster for Cottonwood in NC, will begin trying out his beers there first, and they will have an awesome selection.

The stout and brown ale were somewhat tasteless... The pale ale had the most flavour, I suppose. The food was WAY overpriced and I don't believe a chef actually prepared the meals. Wish they had an online menu to check out before I took my family there... not much of a reasonable selection of offerings, actually. The waitstaff was nice, though and very kind. Another downtown, overpriced, overrated "joint".

The beer was drinkable, but it was pretty tasteless. Someone needs to tell the brewer about hops. I had the ipa and red and neither was very good. It is my experience that nc breweries outside western north carolina have a lot of work to do and these guys are no different. I can't believe a town this size has such a poor selection of breweries. The beer is drinkable, but not something I would choose to drink again. The pizza on the other hand was great and so were their wings.

The beer here is better than most in the area, but some are hit and miss. some times they're better than other times. The seasonal IPA is excellent though!

The ales are definitely the best bet here. I went on a Tuesday night (one of the worst traditionally for restaurants)and got good food that was more than "pub fodder". I had the additional blessing of an attentive server. I'll go again (but won't do the dark beer again). It IS possible it was an off batch, but off batches shouldn't make it to the public...

We decided to visit this brewry on the reviews we read on this site. The beer was great and we brought home a growler. I esp. liked their seasonal brew for the holidays. Great food too, esp. beer cheese soup in the bread bowl.

I see many observations of poor quality in this place but I have been many times and never had anything but good beer service and food. It almost seems like there is a smear campaign out for this place. The plastic cup comments are a joke. It beats the crap out of long time resident Greenshields. Go and Enjoy.

I have been very pleased with every meal I've had at the SouthEnd Brewery. I even took my parents there. The wait staff gave me a couple samples of beer before I decided I liked Railroad Red the best. Great atmosphere, food, beer and people.

Very good food and service; nice people. The Stout and Railroad Red are recommended beers. Very nice atmosphere. Well worth the trip. If you order a Stout, make sure you watch the bartender draw it.

I was very pleasantly surprised with this place after reading the reviews below. I had a stout which was very creamy, smooth and flavorful. It was served in a glass pint glass (not a plastic cup) and was not too cold, i.e., it was cellar temperature. The food was good, but not memorable - I had some sort of pasta dish. I thought the service was really very attentive. This was on a Tuesday night, so maybe they do better when they're not too busy.

Eight house selections for a brewpub is alot. The beer covers everything from a "light blond ale", onto a nitrogen stout and then to a full punch "powerhouse pale ale". The nitro oatmeal stout has a great creamy tight bubble creamy head with a nice chocolate malt balance. The powerhouse pale ale is a malty beer with lots of hop bitterness, flavor, and aroma to balance. Great selection and great beers. Oh yes, my Lady really liked the seasonal brew, a spicy ale with a touch of cinnamon and vanilla.

I made my third and final trip to this swillery. Crappy beer servered too cold in plastic, bland to just plain bad food served by sullen, poorly trained and uninformed staff. What's to like? Many better options within walking distance in Raleigh.
