Did you ever think that the bartenders attitude was in reaction to your poor attitude. As the saying goes "Treat others how you want to be treated". You can determine just how well a server or bartender will treat you by how well you treat them. For example if your nice to them they will be nice to you, if your a rude obnoxious jerk then you will be treated as such. And go rent the movie "Waiting" for further reference.

The food is top flight, I had the beet salad and mussels and the salad was as good as one I had in a fancy New Orleans restaurant that will remain nameless. The beer selection is legendary with good reason.
As for the service, the front room is understaffed, they have tables, but no waitstaff. You have to walk up the ramp to get to the hostess, and this wasn't explicit. I sat at the bar and TOTALLY DISAGREE with previous comments of snooty, poor service. The two guys working maintained a calm attitude with a large crowd depending on them, but they were efficient, covered for each other, and never failed to come through. The owners might want to add a front room server, but I don't count that against those who were working.

I visit the Hopleaf every month or so, and on a very recent Friday night, I was surprised when the bartender told me many of the reviews written pointed to poor service and rude bartenders. On said Friday night, I enjoyed beverage and food service at the bar, at a time when the establishment was perhaps at its busiest. Not only was the food extremely tasty, the beer cold, and the selection extensive; the service was quick and the staff behind the bar, attentive and delightful. Megan and comrades did a terrific job--serving, suggesting, and generally excelling in their profession.
If you are looking for domestic beer and just anything to eat--this may not be the location for you, to be sure. However, if you are looking to nosh on delicately prepared mussels and ham sandwiches (among others...) , while enjoying a wide variety of carefully selected beers, all in a comfortable atmosphere, then this is the place for you.
Enjoy!

Hopleaf used to be a rather small bar in the quaint neighborhood of Andersonville. Over the past 10 years it has expanded and developed into the one of the few gastropubs in Chicago. How can you go wrong when the beer menu reads like a Bible and the mussels and sweatbreads are so delectable. This is the place to spenad a great evening with friends, talk, try beers you have never heard of before and feast on a sausage plate.

Lover the Hopleaf and glad we made the trek to Andersenville to check it out. Went belly up and spent a couple of hours sampling the beers, though a number of the ones we wanted were missing because of an apparent rush the night before.
Make sure you try the fries, duck leg confit and the mussels in the beer broth - all are outstanding and pair wonderfully with the variety of beers. Be sure to allocate a good portion of your day to exploring the menu here, as the selection of beers - particularly belgians - is mindboggling.

Despite occassional lapses in service (though my complaint isn't about 'snottyness' so much as lazy, or slow, service), this is a top-flight beer cafe in Chicago. And with the addition of a wonderful diner in the back, they've only added to their secure reputation as a premier beer stop.

The impressive beer selection has been commented on extensively, and I concur. Snotty service has also been commented on extensively, and I also concur. A note to the reviewer who defends jerky service because "you wouldn't be happy all the time either" if you were a bartender. You're absolutely right. If I were a bartender, I'd probably be cranky too -- which is why I'm not a bartender. And I'm tired of seeing this excuse rolled out to defend shitty service. I can't think of a more intensely people- and customer-oriented occupation than a bartender. If that's not what you're cut out for, GO WORK SOMEPLACE ELSE. Attitude will drag a hospitality business down further than any other factor and THERE'S NO EXCUSE FOR IT. No patron should EVER have to put up with some jerk behind the counter taking it out on them because the jerk doesn't like the job he chose of his own free will.

One of the top 3 bar beers in the area, right up there with Firkin and Map Room. Quite an impressive beer list, and all served with the appropriate glassware.

WOW!! What a Great selection of Beers on Tap and also in Bottles. Mostly Microbrews and Imports, no Major Commercial Breweris. Can you say BELGIUM, BELGUIM, BELGIUM?!?!?! Great Belgium Beers to select from, and the Belgium style food also compliments the Beers Nicely. We where luck enough to sit at the same table with the owner "Michael Roeper", and talk about Beer and Food Pairings. Another Great thing about this place, is the Front Part is for Smokers, and the Back Part is for Non-Smokers. This place is a Nice Diamond in the Rough!

Not as many US beers as I'd have liked to see. A lot of Euro beers but I'm not so keen on those. A long way on the bus from downtown for little reward.

I've been in Andersonville for six years and have been a patron of The Hopleaf the entire time. It's funny to read the comments about the rude bartenders. Michael, and his staff are very interesting and intelligent people. If you complain about their arrogance and lack of knowledge you clearly aren't too familiar with their personalities and the general flow of the bar. Try going back a few more times before passing such opinions.

Yeah i just moved to chicago and the owner of the Hopleaf Is a family friend. and i will be working there in the very near future when the restaurant part opens. (bye the way, the food is going to be top notch, just like the beer selection) Your comments about the rude bartenders is true. But after working in bars as long as some of them have, you wouldnt be happy every second of the day either. And this Bull**** about the staff not being knowledgable about the beers is out of left field.. And my final comment, yes they do have the biggest selection of belgian beers in the USA.

I go to the Hopleaf after work, on the weekdays. This way I get the best of both worlds, my favorite bartender, and no huge crowds. I love the Hopleaf, the atmosphere, beer, and Manhattans are the best around.

Great selection of beers, but I have to agree, the worst bartenders in the world. Just another example of arrogance and elitist attitude among bar owners and staff. Your just slinging beer, for pete's sake..... lighten up!!

They have a very extensive list of beers to choose from, imports to micros. They have something for everyone. As I found out during my first visit, it is cash only, so bring a fist full if you want to enjoy more than a couple. They are adding on to serve food in the near future so you can eat and drink. Worth a visit.

Service could be more efficient and knowledgeable, but on the whole I must echo the most positive comments about this place. I started out with Allagash Grand Cru on tap, moved on to Cantillon Olde Bruocsella and finished off with one of Bells seasonal stouts. Chicago is lucky to have this and the Map Room. A whole 3x4 foot chalkboard listing the Belgian selection alone! Bit too smoky.

Hey Sully, I live in Andersonville and I just wanted to give you my take on the "gentrification" issue. The gentrification of Andersonville has been underway for years now. Fortunately it hasn't been as bad as other places like Bucktown or the Southport corridor where you see entire rows of brand-new, spectacularly hideous, poorly constructed 3-flats. There are a few such buildings around here, but for the most part, people have opted instead to rehab the existing housing stock. As far as I can tell, the basic character of the area has been left pretty much intact and there's a good mix of ethnicity and income level here. While it's not exactly cheap, it's still the best value for the dollar in the north side if you ask me.

The Hopleaf is a world class beer bar. I don't understand some of the criticism. The belgians were served to me in exactly the correct glasses. They are outstanding as are the other taps of local microbrews. There's not a dud here unless you select the $2 Pioneer Lager that they have on for a joke I assume. As the menu says "They have Mead!" and many other impossible to find beers in bottles. They have the complete Bells catalog and dozens of other top notch beers. Soon the Hopleaf will at least double in size and serve food as the renovation is well under way. It looks like they're located near ground zero of some kind of Andersonville gentrification wave. Just like with the Music Box Theatre, the art comes first and then the bulldozers. Good luck but it would seem changes are afoot. Hopefully things will still be good althought not quite the same.

Excellent tavern, excellent beers. A neighborhood bar on weekdays and weekend afternoons, a place to be seen on the weekend evenings. Staffed by some of the best bartenders in Chicago. If you want a bartender that gabs and makes small talk while other patrons are waiting for beers then go to North Beach or Yakzies. If you want to show them how cool you are and how much you know about beer then go to the Great Beer Palace with the rest of the frat crowd. If you can't handle the smoke then don't go to a bar. But if you want what is arguably the best beer selection in Chicago then I'll see ya at the Hopleaf.

I agree with D Goodrich, the Hopleaf, although they have a great selection, are by far the rudest staff memebers I have ever come across. They know nothing of thier ales and resent the people who do know. It is obvious (based on the mixed reviews) that we had the same bar teneder as Godrich who would seemed to me to have been better suited to pulling miller light for inbred rednecks. Apologies for the tone but the visit quite frankly left me furious.
