I'm probably the last person left alive who remembers when the P.B. *opened*. It used to occupy the entire building, complete with fireplace, and has since been downsized.
In a recent visit back to E.L. after 15 years I found it (and the clientele) unchanged (except for the elimination of the mug club) since I left, and that's a good thing. I'll agree with the assessment that it's a rare neighborhood bar in a mass-market conformist-frat-drink-of-the-week market.
Food's still good, beer's still cold, Long Island Iced Teas are still lethal (the limit of two is there for a reason -- I was there). If you want to get some good food and drink and hang with your buds, it's great. If you want to pretend you're a Detroit-suburb homeboy and impress the ladies, it's probably going to be over your head.

Great local bar. Great because no GREEK!!! It's not that we are not welcome at Pt's - it's that we don't want to hang with the Pt's clientle.
Beer selection is So-So on tap - they have added Blue Moon, the bottle selection is better Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Bell's 2 hearted make this hophead happy.
The burgers are the best and you get to throw your peanut shells on the floor! Pool, darts, jukebox, I could do without all of the TV's. Come early - fills up fast on the weekends.

Now Here is a great place NOT to go. Filled with alternative losers that aren't welcome at PT's. This dump is known for each shitty food and welcoming of the freaks. No Girls, No Greeks, No Fun.

It is by far the best bar for those of us who just want to see some friends, eat some good food, and have a beer. A great hang out place for newbies and regulars.

The Barrel is the kind of place people would go for something different in East Lansing. The patio offers a great place to spend your lunch hour, or a nice excuse to skip Spanish 201 in Berkey across the street. Although the beer selection is only average, the atmosphere provides a nice change from the typical college bar scene full of drunken students groping each other on the dance floor. While there are only a few beers on tap, the long island is something to consider if you really want to get drunk fast. Warning: there is a limit of two. Why? You'll have to see for yourself.

I visited this place with unrealistic expectations. To be fair, it's a nice little place with excellent burgers, a dart-board, and an energetic crowd. They also have a great selection of bottled beers. However, they only had 4 beers on tap, only one of which (Samuel Adams) was drinkable. The others were Bud, Bud Lite, and Miller Lite...yecch. I'm not sure they should even be considered a "beer bar"...whatever that is. I was just very disappointed in the puny tap selection.

The Peanut Barrel is a bit of a rarity: an easy-going neighborhood bar thriving in the heart of a fast, very college-oriented town. The crowd is mixed between legendary neighborhood regulars and college kids who come and go. The beer selction is very good, with a wide variety of domestics, imports, and micros /specials. Prices are very reasonable, and they also boast the best burgers in town. Joe Bell, long-time the owner, is the friendliest of tavern-keepers, and his outstanding sense of hospitality seems to rub off on the help. In short, if you simply want to go out in East Lansing and enjoy a nice comfortable quaff in good company, this is the only place to go. The Barrel is quiet days, perks up at lunch, and can get a little frantic on weekend nights - it's always fun. (Great jukebox, friendly pool table, and, of course, darts)
