Stopped by once again on New Year's Day and had their version of a kristalweissen, ta da, sans lemon. It was wonderful. Enough of that. Everything was "awesome" but the food left a bit to be desired this time. Meat loaf was a bit spongy (too much time in the mircowave?), and the Caesar salad uninspired. Our server (can't remember his name) was entertaining and very efficient.

To Glenn, stuy, NY (wherever that is), I'm surprised it's taken me this long to read your response to my review, but I need to respond by saying that while I respect your opinion, I object to your elitist attitude that those of us who like this addition to our beverage are Blue Moon or Shock Top drinkers. Why would you compare a Belgian fake to a hefeweizen in the first place?

Despite a bizarre location, Albany Pump Station is well worth seeking out. Big interior with views of the brew kettles, two dining areas and upstair seating for special events. Nine taps were running to go along with a full bar. Tried the Oktoberfest, Kick Ass Brown, Blueberry Trippel(13%) and the State St. Porter. Excellence all around. The Trippel goes down smooth and sneaks up on you. Lenghty food menu. Plenty of great selections. Had the Pump House burger w/sweet potato fries. Great burger. Even better fries. Love the open air feeling of the place despite being buried under a couple freeway on/off ramps. Well worth the visit.

To BR State College PA.......... It is considered an insult to put a lemon into a decent hefeweizen. That is more for the un-educated Blue Moon and Shock Top drinkers as I suspect you are. George brews a great beer and is proud of it. It needs no doctoring up with lemon as do the lesser quality Hefeweizens. His awards were because that certified beer judges sampled his beers "without" any lemon added and felt that they were an exemplary sample of the beer style.

Our second visit to one of our favorite brewpubs. Another great example of adaptive reuse, this time under a megaton crane that was actually used to set the brewing equipment. All was awesome, and the brewmeister's love for his craft was everywhere in evidence by all the award banners on display. We will go back again and again, but will never understand the brewmeister's desire for us customer types to NOT put lemon in his hefeweisse.

We knew we were in for a treat when my wife and I each took a sip of the Scottish Light and said, "This is a dangerous beer" -- it went down that easy and was that flavorful. Each of the beers on tap in the sampler was excellent. The hefe was pleasant with banana and clove notes; the altbier was delicious, its bitterness nicely offset by its maltiness; the stout was full-bodied and powerful (and served at the proper temperature), with cocoa and coffee notes; the brown was hoppier than most brown ales but rich with caramel malts. Even the APA was good, and I don't normally like pale ales. The food was very good and affordable, and the service was outstanding. It was also kid-friendly. There was everything to like and nothing to dislike.

As I tried to say on their Facebook page...The Smoked Hefe just doesn't do it for me and I much prefer the better, regular, unfiltered, tasty, Hefe. The Wit is drinkable and a somewhat acceptable substitute. Best beers ever brewed; the Grand Cru and Dawn's Dry Stout! The kitchen staff do an outstanding job with food and the servers are the best! What a great building too!

First, the beer was very good. All we had was IPA, but it was excellent, akin to a Dogfish Head 60 Minute. The food was interesting. They tried, but it didn't always work out, however, I give them extra points for trying. Had the calamari, which the jalapeno sauce on the bottom of the dish really helped kick it up and enliven it. The Thai Chicken Wings were an interesting take on the traditional wings, but it worked. I'd definitely try this place again.

We stopped in for some beer and a bite to eat on a saturday at around 2pm. We sat in the tap room, and ordered the sampler. All of the beers were flavorful and interesting, and i ended up ordering the Belgian style brown with Sour Cherry, and my dh ordered the Pale Ale. Both were magnificent! Next came our appetizer. We had ordered the spinach and artichoke dip. It was served in a bread bowl that was more like a croissant, and it was absolutely delicious! My dh ordered the pumphouse burger, and i ordered the turkey burger, and we both enjoyed our meals. Our server was attentive without being bothersome, and all in all, we had a fabulous experienc there.

I really enjoyed this brewery, I really like the old building. Being on business I limited myself to a Pale and a Brown, both were quite good. I hope to visit again when I have more time.

Enjoyed an exceptional dopple bock, also liked the Scottish light ale. Two of the four members of our party were disappointed with their entrees (both a bit too dry, different items) but this was probably because the kitchen was pretty busy. This was my second visit and I would return. Slainte'

Stopped by while I was in town. I tried a few new to me this visit. Scottish Light had a slight smokiness or peatiness to it, relatively light in nature. Belgian Strong, a triple, seemed subdued and drinkable, definitely not over the top. Old Musty Barleywine didn't strike me as too good. It seemed rather acidic; maybe it was on for a while, or whatever. Bartender much too busy with personal conversations to properly attend to customers.

Stopped by on the way to Vermont (see my review); it is located on Quakenbush Square (who I believe was a Groucho Marx character)in a large airy building with extensive parking and a comfortable, yet small, bar area. It is right off I287 and makes a good pubcrawl with Brown Brewing Company in nearby Troy (15-20 Minutes?)
APH/Evans offers 7 Taps: A belgian ale, which was served in the proper glass; a mildly hoppy "Pump Station Pale Ale," boasting three varieties of hops; a porter ("State Street"), with an abv of 5.5; and, on a similar note, a malty brown ale at 5.6. (By the way, Tom (see previous entry), it is called "Kick-Ass" Brown.) Decent place worth stopping by when in the Albany area - or on the way to Vermont.

During a July 06 tour we stopped at C. H. Evans. We were there at lunch time and the place was packed. After lunch it pretty much emptied our. The atmosphere of the building was great. The bartender knew the history of the building and a great knowledge of microbrews. We sampled almost every beer that they make and enjoyed them all. My favorite was the Kiss Ass Brown while my friend's favorite was Quacken Bush Blonde. Would definately return.

Dan was at the bar when we first dropped in from Chicago to check out some New York State brewing. Initially tried the Kick Ass Brown, and were so blown-away by this ale we scarcely tried anything else. Wonderful full-mouth sensation: from lips, to tongue, to palate, to gullet...all satisfying in varying ways. The Old Musty Barley Wine, despite the name, is a rich and powerful beer, wisely served in a small but brimming snifter. My buddy was out of the room when I initially ordered this beer. By the time he returned, the glass was empty: his eyebrows shot up when the waitress, on her next pass by the table, inquired if I'd like "another Old Musty..." The food was the best I've ever enjoyed in a brewpub. Well plated and served. Try the Shrimp and Chicken Gorganzola (lots of sun-dried tomatoes). A spectacular space, within walking distance of Pearl Street Restaurant Row and the Riverfront walk. Excellent parking too, with easy access right off I-787.

I Have been to this place many times but just recently started with pubcrawler so here goes.
Tim was behind the bar after a day off and the phone kept him very busy. All that said his service was only down to great from the usual awesome.
Their Hefe {my favorite] was unavailable so i had a sampler and got a pleasant suprise. 6 beers in the sampler Scottish Light true to their description and much better than I expected as i prefer spicy sweet beers or Dark Beers. Quakenbush Blond was good but not my style. Next was very pleasant surprise indeed, Belgian Pale. I drink a lot of craft beers and this one is a delight, a Hefe style spiciness and a pleasant balance of hops at the end that i usually dont prefer but wow. After that Rowlands Porter, Pumping Station Pale, and finally Kick Ass Brown, all good as usual. Before I move on to the food I would like to say their conistent beer quality amazes me.
The Veggie Burger. Beans, corn, bun, LTO, guacamole, chipotle mayo and smoked mozz. Great, we opted for the sweet potato fies and they were also great. Thanx Mr. Evans for keeping a fine establishment up to par all the time even down to clean bathrooms.

Hi all,
I'm the Brewmaster at the Pump Station. I'm responding to Robin Inman's recent review describing poor service at our eastablishment. Since this site allows reviews with no way to contact the writer, I am forced to take up space here.
There is no excuse for the rude behavior you received, and for that I apologize. I do wish you had spoken to a manager or at least e-mailed us before writing a negative review on the internet, where it will likely persist long after the offending server has left our restaurant. We work hard to make every customer's experience a good one. If something is not to one's liking we will do our best to make it better, but we need to be told about the problem to act on it.
I hope that you give us another chance. If you would like to contact me directly, please visit www.EvansAle.com for contact information.

I live in Daytona but return to hometown Albany about once a year and always try to stop by the Pump Station. Aside from the excellent brews, the historical restoration warms my heart, and the food is always appealing if a bit pricey. Bar staff have always been attentive and cordial. Nice place for lunch if you're doing the historical tour based at the Heritage Center next door.

For years we have savored the beer, food, and ambiance here. After our recent experience, however, we may not return. I have never been so rudely insulted by a waitress. We paid our dinner bill with a credit card and added the tip to the charge. When Johanna, our server, returned, she questioned my addition, which was flawless, and snidely commented on the amount of the tip, which would have been less than what I wrote down if one were to believe *her* incorrect addition. Now I’m happy to have someone double check my addition after I’ve had a couple beers, but such rude treatment is inexcusable. Be forewarned.

It had been quite a while, so I stopped by. Tried the Evans Wit. Nice--spicy and refreshing. Coriander/ginger in a good balance overall with all other flavors. State St. Porter a good choice as well, roasty and satisfying. Brick interior with tanks in the loft above bar. An expansive seating area, but good atmosphere overall. Jazz music playing gives it a real comfortable feel.

My wife and I stopped for a quick snack and beer before dropping me off at the airport for a work trip. I had the kick-ass brown. My wife the Stout. The Brown's a Gold Medal winner and deservedly so. I never tire of this one no matter how often I have it. It's always clean and crisp with the right amount of bitter/burnt and hoppy balance. A wonderful beer! My wife's stout was also very good. It seemed balanced the right way with malt vs. hops and the initial nose was perfect. However, after the brown, I had trouble with the hops flavor in the Stout due to the saturation level from the brown so I can't tell you if the taste balance was truely there.
We had the small nacho platter. It's more than enough for two!!!

Decided to stop by after attending the Jet/Giants practice at SUNY Albany. Since this was a Saturday, I was lucky to arrive before the dinner crowd started to fill the place. Had three excellent beers in addition to two great appetizers on the menu. Even though I was seated by myself at one of the high tables near the bar, a number of people constantly asked if I needed anything. By the time I left, the place was filled to capacity, and there appeared to by a wait for tables. Judging by the upscale atmosphere, this seems like one of the top places to eat on a Saturday night. Will definately go back on my next visit to Albany.

Well, the reviews for this place are all over the spectrum--mine goes on the good side. I was there for lunch and was surprised at the crowd. Even had to wait for a seat at the bar--but there were appologies all around and the patrons were friendly. This is a really cool space and conveniently located--you can see it from the freeway and find your way--it's as close as it looks! On tap the day I was there: Scotish light, Quackenbash blond, state street porter, Kick-ass brown, American Amber, candy apple red, pump station pale, and braggot (? my notes are a bit sloppy). The Pump Station Pale was very good. Not only was it bitter but you could actually taste the hops--any home brewer who has stuck his/her nose in the bag of hops and sniffed knows what I am talking about. The porter was smoky and succulent! The description in the menue made it sound like it was going to be sweet but it wasn't. The kick ass brown was great--a bitter brown--can it get much better? Although I am not a fan of heffe, the patrons next to be kept raving about it so I tried it--it was actually quite good. Since I typically don't like that style, I'm not sure what that says to those of you who do. I loved this place and will certainly make it a regular stop each time I'm in Albany.

I finally had a chance to try the Half Moon IPA on cask. Simply outrageous. Very dry, but the hop character is well-balanced. A big beer at 7%, but it doesn't taste so. Could be dangerous. They tap a cask each Friday and it's usually gone by Saturday, so if you'd like to try it, plan accordingly. A portion of the proceeds goes toward the Half Moon restoration fund, so you can drink great beer and support a worthy cause at the same time. Is that great or what?

Visited Sunday, 3/21, for victuals and grog before Palace tie-dye gathering Tasted the Kick Ass brown, awesome as usual, although this tasting a little more hoppy (See my previous review), and the Kolsch (not one of my preferred styles). BUT this Kolsch (German ale, which is fermented at lower temps than English ales, as I understand it) is AWESOME. Much of the Kolsch I've tasted is fruity with a clove note. I prefer a more neutral palate in beer. (I'm a lager guy) This Kolsch has lager character with a hint of spicey-ness. Paired wonderfully with their excellent Thai peanut wings. The service was awesome. Twenty+ at the bar, one server. She is a total pro. Just an awesome experience overall! (Of course the pre-concert clientele made it a little more special) Great atmosphere, music. (Just wish this place didn't close so early on Sunday (8 pm?!)Needed a post concert cool down.)

George is at it again! This time it's a "Grand Cru", the type of which I believe is a "fest" type beer originally brewed for special occasions. It is a wonderful Belgian Ale and is written up on the Web Site as having a complex, spicy character. Don't let the "spicy" part scare you. It has a wonderful malt character and is indeed complex, but without a preponderance of spices or fruits. It is perfectly balanced is the best way to put it. At 6.2% ABV it's slightly higher in alcohol than what you're usually used to, and is properly served in a tulip glass. Great job as always George!

This BP's signature product, "Kick Ass Brown Ale", although not in the traditional English brown ale style is, nonetheless, awesome. Beautiful marriage and balance of malt and hops. In the top 5 of my favorite beers. The porter and the "winter warmer" are excellent: Porter has a smoky bourbon note, clean, SMOOTH, moderate body. Winter warmer, touch of malty sweetness, rich body, moderate hoppiness. The "Vienna style lager" did not measure up. Flat (this pour) and not to style. The "style" designation made me suspicious at the start. The flavor was too estery (fruity) to be a lager. I suspect that this brew was made with ale yeast at lager temperatures (cold) to make an ale "suggestive" of a lager. My experience with the "style" designation has usually been disappointing. It's not the real deal and it shows. Also, either a BP is a lager house or an ale house. Rarely have I found one that makes both equally great.

Hello all,
As the Head Brewer at the C.H. Evans Brewing Company I feel it necessary to correct a popular misconception, last stated in the review prior to this one. Neither Scottish Light nor Quackenbush Blonde are our best selling beers. Kick-Ass Brown, which fits into the style of an American Brown ale, is number one, with Pump Station Pale being a close second. The Blonde is third. The light beer is usually number 5 or 6 out of 7.
The beer drinkers here really appreciate full-flavored brews, and the hoppier, the better. I am quite pleased to brew for customers with such adventurous taste!

All of the beers on tap have distinct, usually good, characters; no “kit brewery” with malt extracts here! In general, each of the beers is sweeter than what I expected, but that is not a complaint. The Scottish Ale is just a sweet, pleasant BudLite type. Not bad. I guessed that this was the beer the happy hour crowd chose, but no (more about that below)! The Amber Ale was a good Scottish ale, a little light. The Quackenbush Blonde was OK--just beer, not special. This is the most popular beer; the happy hour people like it because it tastes the least like beer and the most like ice tea. It figures. This Hefeweisen was incredible! A major kick in the tastebuds from clove and coriander! Their (allegedly pilfered) yeast is gotta be working overtime!! The “Belgian Style” Strong Ale is surprisingly light (in color) ‘cause it’s actually a classic Trippel: sweet, heavy, and sneaky (9% rocket fuel). Every self-respecting microbrewery needs a Stout; they have Evans Extra Stout: I don’t know if it’s the original 1700’s recipe, but it was just another sweet, non-assertive stout (not nitrated). The de rigueur hoppy beer is the Pump Station Pale Ale: not only was it well hopped like an IPA, but also it was flavorful, with a hint of celery, like a young Chablis. Very good! I don’t understand what brown ales are for, they don’t fit into any category for me, but this one, the Kick Ass Brown, was much better than most, more aromatic malt base, with a surprising delivery of hops aftertaste. Not bad! I didn’t sample a lot of the food, but what I had was edible but a little strange; it probably reflects local tastes. The service is always good at the bar, and you can debate the beers while you taste them.

The award-winning Kick-Ass Brown lives up to the hype, but the other beers I tried (amber, pale ale) were only ok. The food is quite tasty, and this place is certainly worth a stop if you're making the trek across the NY State Thruway. Oh yeah...the growlers are beautiful (and pricey because of it!)

Ooops...forgot my rating! ------------- After 2 years in Wisconsin, I drove 100+ miles out of my way to the The Man, George de P, and the ever lovely Kick Ass Brwon and Hefeweizen. The Belgian Strong must be drunk to be believed!

The Belgian-Style Strong Ale is on now, and it's life a 200-MPH! Put on the seatbelt, because two's the limit on this one at 9% ABV (have a DD with you). It is a perfectly balanced example of the style with just the right combination of fruitiness, malt, and hint of hops. If heaven came in a glass - this is it!

Alright, I typically can be pretty harsh about places that call themselves brewpubs...
This is a world class establishment with excellent staff and a great owner.
The presentation of the building is simply amazing - a great floorplan with brewing gear displayed as main attractions.
The beer is stylistically correct and the brewer is a seasoned professional.
Be sure to check out their great looking growlers and the intimate area back by the fireplace...
This is a must stop if you are anywhere near Albany, New York.

The Winter Warmer is now on, and it's excellent. A big beer with a respectable ABV, but not overpowering; nice malt character. If you like the style, check it out while you can.

Went to the Pumphouse while in Albany seeing a show. The Place was jamming when we got there but we managed to get a table(thanks alot Neil!!) Everthing about this place was top notch. The food, atmosphere, the beer and the people. I tried the sampler platter of beers and not one was dissapointing. There were a couple of lighter beers in the sampler that I wouldn't normally buy anywhere, but they were crisp, clean, and well crafted. The brown ale is one of the hoppiest browns I have ever had, but finishes with a nice chocolate flavor on the tongue letting you know that you are still drinking a brown ale, great brew!! The pale is out of this world, a nice hoppy brew, with a dry finish that gives this brew a drinkability that is needed for a session brew. I could have drank this beer all night, but instead I got to the Strong Ale, which is in fact a Belgian Tripel. With a great aroma, yeasty esters, wonderful flavor, and an abv of around 9%, this is one of the best Belgian Tripels I have ever had. It stands up to anything from Belgium, and I would choose this beer over any Tripel I have tasted from this country as well. I haven't even mentioned the Hefe, or Wit yet, also two superb, world class beers. Neil Evans, and the Brewmaster, George de Piro were two of the nicest guys I have met in the brewing industry, and quite obviously, they know what they are doing!!! Keep up the great work guys, you will be seeing me again for sure!!

The Kickass brown is one of the best beers I have had. The other 7 available beers were wonderful. A great old warehouse location that has been turned into a modern brewpub. Everyone in our party enjoyed then entrees & appetizers. Definitely worth the trip.

Some good beers here. The food can also be good (sometimes). Stick with some of the simple dishes, they turn out better. Service is not the high point. All that said, it is a nice atmosphere and a place that I hope stays open for a long time. With a little work this could be something great.

Talk about terrible……where should I begin? Well for starters, we called before visiting, because we were concerned about the Sunday dining hours… what time they stopped serving food, specifically. The person who answered the phone got annoyed with our question, sounding like she got asked that hundreds of times before, and was extremely rude. The answer was 8 pm. So, we planned an evening out to enjoy downtown albany activites and then finish off with a nice dinner & beer! (We Thought!) Anyway, we were escorted to our table by someone that wasn’t friendly or smiling. After a not too long wait, we were approached by our server. She quickly recited several beer flavors and asked what I wanted. I tried for the brown, no dice. Next to the amber or a lager, nope, none of them left either. The rest of the table scoffed, because they let me know that she had just explained all that. When It came down to it, they only had 3 or 4 beers out of the 8 or 10 listed on the chalk board over the bar. And the nightmare began…. Light, Stout, or Pale Ale, she said, very snotty. I stopped to think for a second, and that annoyed her, so she looked across the table and said grouchily, “do you know what you want.” To someone else I was seated with - Like I was incapable of ordering a drink. I went for the Pale Ale. She then went to the waitress station near by and got on a personal phone call. It took much too long for me to get my 1st beer. (not the first time that’s happened at the pump station), Anyhow, we ordered some appz. The food taste and quality were both as poor as the service and the beer selection. One app being overcooked, and the steamers, well they were a bucket of sand. I think this could be catagorized as the worst dining experience we have had for as long as I can remember. We decided to leave without entrees, choosing to go home and cook ourselves.(and we were extremely hungry) We also decided that would be our final visit to the nice building. If you are an out-of-towner or a serious diner, please be advised of this most unpleasant occurrence & take the extra 5 minute drive to another brew pub in the area. I think the Owner, Manager & Brewmaster should be ashamed of all of this and rethink how to get rid of the unhappy staff & poor selection of beverages. Like mentioned below (in other reviews), the setting and location is about the only thing this place has going for it. Have a good day!

I had the pale ale and the nice and hoppy kickass brown, which were excellent, and my wife had their awesome hefeweisen. There are enough varieties on tap so that there is something for everyone. The food was terrific and all the staff from hostess to bartender to server were courteous and efficient. All this in a very cool warehouse building...i want to go back just to hang out in the lounge area near the fireplace...very cool!

Wow, there sure seems to be a partisan character to some of these reviews! That's good and bad, I guess: good because it shows passion, bad because it's a bit misplaced. The brewpubs in the Capital District all offer something to different people. Here at the Pump Station, people get some great beer along with a truly breath-taking setting. I regret that the evidently fabulous Hefe wasn't on when I visited; maybe some other time, because between the good beer and the very easy access off I-787 I'll definitely be back. The Kick-Ass Brown deserves the GABF Gold it won in 2000. This is a dark IPA, with a long intense hop finish supported by solid malt and chocolate notes. The Dawn's Dry Stout was quite good, with a distinct coffee/roast malt aroma and flavor. The Pale Ale (which evidently sells like mad) seemed a little off the day I was in, with plenty of hop aroma and flavor, but with a slight cheesey/Band-Aid edge to it. Probably an effect of a particular batch of hops. I also tasted a very interesting tripel that had been keg-conditioned with hefe yeast, according to the bartender. It had an aroma like a slightly tart circus peanut candy, and an explosive fruit and spice flavor, sweet and sharpish, quite unlike anything else I'd ever had, a very stimulating beer. Like to go back and try some more at this place!

Very nice place in downtown Albany. The beers were consistently good and I met some nice people there. I only had the steamers as an appetizer, but the menu items looked very good, if not somewhat over priced ($18 for jambalya?). Definitely a place to go while in Albany.

Mr. Potter must be one of those guys that thinks the "Brew Pub" in the mall is fantastic, because that's the only place his wife lets him go while she's shopping. If you wouldn't know a good beer if it hit you in the head - kindly go back to your Coors Light and shut up. I travel the world for both pleasure and work, and there is no better Brewmaster ANYWHERE. The other brew pubs in the Capital District are only make-believe. The Pale Ale at Evans is WORLD CLASS. And the Kick-Ass Brown goes beyond. The recent Braggot was worth dying for. And as far as the bartenders, I have never met a more accommodating and friendly bunch. They're all Irish - need I say more?

I am the brewer at the C.H. Evans Brewing Company. I find it necessary to correct some inaccuracies in Steve Potter's review:
We have always sold beer in 16 ounce pint glasses. If you were served beer in an Imperial pint in the past, you were at a different place.
We almost always have pale ale, along with at least 7 other distinct beers, on tap. The pale ale does tend to sell faster than we can produce it, so it is occassionally unavailable for one or two days. The very hoppy brown ale is usually considered a fine substitute.
Anybody is free to not like the taste of our beer, but it is quite rude to post inaccurate information. Pubcrawler reviews without e-mail addresses are as good as anonymous, and should probably be regarded with suspicion. I wonder why they are even allowed.

The building is fantastic, however, management must decide what they want to be; Brew Pub or fancy restaurant. The beer variety is poor at best. No pale ale, no lagers. The beer all has a distinct flavor--what, I am not sure. The bartenders are rude and generally not very friendly. They sell their ales in the new "baby pint", instead of the classic imperial pint. Keep the old glass and raise the price. Generally, the place caters to people un-familiar with good beers. I've tried to find something to like, but I think new management is the only answer.

The best brewpub for miles around. Clearly superior to the Big House, Malt River and the Van Dyke. Congratulations on winning the Gold Medal for American Brown Ale at the GABF. I attended the GABF in October and the beers of C.H. Evans' are as good as any in the U.S.
Before I forget, food and service are also top notch.

It looks like the manager of the Big house put my name to a review because they know that their food blows. The pump station is clearly the better restaurant and the hefe is the best in new york... the staff at the big house are generally unknowledgeable and irritated that youve come there.

I won't bore you with my full tasting notes of all seven beers that they had available. The highlights were their Bavarian-style hefeweizen (very clove-y in the nose, the mouth, and the long finish), the Scottish Light ale (a nice sweet malty flavor with some "toast" and a short finish), and Dawn's Dry Stout (roasted barley throughout but just sweet enough to be, as I noted "beautifully not overdone"). All are brewed to style. I had a good dinner with the beers.

Loved the Building and the BEER!! The brewer (George De Piro) makes a great varietyn of beer and was happy to talk for a few minutes. Most of the food looked great, but I had the Jambalaya and thought it was more hot than flavorful. Wish I could make it to this brewpub more often. A Must See for the Albany area.

i have to agree with this "dave" fellow, the beer is some of the best i've ever quaffed, in the year they've been open we've been treated to belgian tripel, hefeweizen, barleywine, belgian cherry brown, stout, maibock, ipa, weizenbock, hoppy pale ale, citrusy pale ale, bitter, esb, brown, porter, belgian pale ale and more, cask conditioned beers on the weekend, the food is creative and unique, the building is spacious with great atmosphere, the owner, brewer and staff are all friendly and knowledgeable and the best thing of all is that i can walk here in 20 minutes!

This place is the "BEST"!!!! The brewer gives a hands down, incredibly diverse selection of brews.Last weekend I went in and found a cask conditioned "Wit" beer.I am not a fan of wit beers, but this was exceptional (especially after cutting the lawn for 1-1/2 hours). The food is divine,as is the ambiance.I would live there if the owner would set me up a bed in the back!

The Albany Pump Station is a huge old building, with exposed ducts/beams and a glass-enclosed brewery. They offered 6 different styles, and all but the Miloweizen were on the lighter side. They did feature an unusual Belgian Pale Ale, and you can definitely identify both styles. Another unusual feature of CH Evans is the location...it's easy to reach from the highway and there's plenty of parking.

No pale ale on a Saturday afternoon. Corn chowder was "mealy." On the positive side, wheat beer was good and nachos generous.

I visited the brewpub straight off my plane from Myrtle Beach South Carolina. This is where I am an assistant brewer. I was impressed by the looks of the brewery and by the ambience. The beer was very clean in taste and clarity. I felt there should be some heavier beers for the winter but the thing that was disappointing was my introduction with the brewer. Not to interested in conversing about beer I brought or where I worked. I thought it would be fun. Maybe some other time. :(

I hate to give out "awesomes"; maybe I will regret not awarding that exalted rating to CH Evans on my first visit. Worth the trip. Food was excellent, service was excellent, the building excellent, location excellent. I shall return.

Fantastic beer, good food, great service and a really neat building. All the beers are really good, and the hefe-weizen is absolutely world class. This place should be considered on par with Victory (and would already if it weren't in Albany).

The hefe, IPA, and the Belgian strong (tripel) are all outstanding for their styles. Huge platter of fish and chips. Considering it's pretty much brand-new, they're doing an excellent job. Big comfy chairs in the lounge area should be a perfect place to sip a pint or three on a cool fall evening. No TVs yet, which can be a blessing!

6 GOOD beers on tap and of the 6, 4 were outstanding: the Hefe-Weizen, Tripple, stout and brown. The Hefe was better than any I have had from Germany! I HIGLY recommend a visit.

A wonderful brewpub. It's exactly what Albany needs, and provides another good reason to come downtown. They compliment, rather than compete with, the Big House. It's first and foremost a brewpub, although the setting and food are more than enough to attract the non-beer geeks. The ESB is great, and the Hefe Weizen is the best representation of the style I've tasted in the area. The cask offerings are quickly scarfed up, which is a pretty good indication of the demand for good cask-conditioned ales. Go there!

They are just getting started so I would expect beer selection to improve with time. Awesome building with huge, rail mounted cranes still in place from its pump house days. This place will give the Big House a good run for its money.

Albany's brand new brewpub. The beers are unfiltered and terrific. The Hefe Weizen and Special Bitter are my favorites (this week). Cask Conditioned ales will soon be available. The food is great, but at this place the beer comes first. Service is awesome. They're really doing it right.
