Stopped in last Monday evening while spending the night/next day in Philly. If you're not careful you might miss the place from the street. It's on the second floor. Sat at the bar and started with their Home Alone, a Belgian-style ale. Was pretty good but nothing exceptional. Then went to the Zephyr, an altbier. Again, okay. Then tried the cask ale which was their Grog, a brown ale. This was nice. Had the right amount of dark malt and carbonation you'd expect from a cask. Lastly tried the BPA, a malty pale ale. I should have tried this one first. It was great! Drank down the first pint so fast because it was so good I had to have another to savor it. Definitely would recommend the BPA or the Grog. As for the food, it was better than the beers. Started with an appetizer of BBQ pulled pork quesadillas. I've never seen them with pulled pork before, typically just cheese or chicken. Whoever thought of BBQ pulled pork deserves a medal. They were fantastic! Follwed that up a little later with famous French-dip roast beef sandwhich and fries with jalapeno mayonnaise. Again, the roast beef was excellent, the dip delicious and the jalapenos mayonnaise terrific! I'm getting hungry for them again just writing about them. Definitely worth trying. I would visit here again but hope they get their other beers up to par with the BPA.

A sampler is $2.00 for each 7 oz. glass. We shared a sampler of each of their 7 beers they had on tap. Really great beer and great food. Would definitely go again if we were in the area.

I stopped in for lunch right after checking into my hotel just down the street. Great beer, including one on hand pump. Apparently they only tap a cask on Thursday, so I hit it right. All of the beers were great, especially Georges Fault, a Belgian-style brewed with lots of honey at 9% alcohol. The others styles included a mild, a brown (on hand pump), a Scottish-style, and a stout. I was surprised to see BBQ on the menu, and asked if this was similar to having cheese steak in the South. It was very good, with a local touch of cheese on top, just like a cheese steak. Staff were friendly and helpful about suggesting other beer places to try. Recommended.

I had a great time here on the afternoon of 11 June 2007. I had just come from the King Tut display and fought 3 buses of 10-year olds the entire way through the show--I was in DIRE need of beer. The bartender on duty was great. He knew his beer and had a great sarcastic wit. None of the beers on tap were your run of the mill type beers. My favorite was the Berliner Weisse. They squirt this green goo into the glass and then fill it with weisse--just incredible. Not a style I typically like but this was great. I sat there and had 3 or 4 pints of it (in addition to the others I tried) but all is fine because a) didn't have to drive and b) alcohol is so low on this I could have sat there the rest of the night and drank it. The hoptimus Prime was very hoppy--but one of those that was so hoppy that it was almost sweet. This place is great fun and good beer.

Visiting Philadelphia on a recent trip to see King Tut (Don't Call Me Boy King), I stopped here for a few brews. NHB sits above the Sansom Street Oyster House; in fact, this location used to be home to the Sam Adams Brewhouse - I guess Sam is associated with Boston rather than Philadelphia. Anyway, you climb a worn staircase and find yourself in the middle of a narrowish room: to the right, a dining area; on the left is a small, rather ornate wooden bar with unusual stained glass decorations looking over the tipplers. There is a large case of bobble-head dolls, to the left, through a doorway is another space. The brewery is off to the side. You pass it on the way to the very small bathroom - very small.
During my visit, NHB offered 7 draughts: "Doc' Blonde Ale, BPA (Bill ____ Pale Ale), Boho Pils, "Gordo" Oatmeal Stout and a very malty Scottish Ale, the latter being on cask.
I enjoyed this place; the many locals seemed to be enjoying themselves. Stayed long enough for some lunch - then off to McGillin's. (Review to come.) --

We stopped here for a beer and an appetizer on a busy Friday evening. I enjoyed a pint of Grog, their award-winning brown ale. My wife was less impressed with the light lager flavored with lemongrass and ginger called Monkey Knife Fight. My ‘great’ rating for beer selection, is not because of the shear number of choices, but acknowledges the interesting variety within the number they offer. In hindsight, I wish we had also sampled their medal-winning Berliner Weisse, to compare to the real thing that we had in Berlin last year. Our chicken wings were pretty good – big full wings. Nice collection of bobbleheads in a display case near the bar.

Please remember the Berliner Weisse is not the Bavarian weisse we all know and love. A Beriner Weisse is very tart and dry, plus how many of you have had that style? The addition of woodruff adds a little sweetness. I found the beer extremely refreshing and will gladly have it again. I also love a Belgian guezue so you know where I'm coming from. But please don't trash a beer because you don't like it.

They have 4 superb beers. Berliner Weisse, Grog(brown ale), Monkey Knife Fight (lager with lemongrass and ginger!), and Hoptimus Prime (3X IPA). Didn't try the food this time. Food is overrated anyway:) I did eat there on other occasions and it was good then. Trust me. Go and enjoy!

A nice character bar... I've had a few beers there that were decent, but one that was SO BAD. Unfortunately I don't remember the name, but me and the three people I was with literally had to choke them down. I wouldn't drink any beer for a solid week after that.
In otherwords, a nice bar...but be careful what you order.

Read Bearded Dave's review right below mine--the fact that it still applies nearly three months later is appalling. I came here for the first time in perhaps six or eight years the other evening. First up for this Scottish-beer lover was the 60 Shilling on cask handpump, and it was a serious struggle to choke it down. The "new beer on the block" was a Berliner Weisse, which was poured with a touch of woodruff syrup as the prototype is--and the bartender asked first if I wanted it with or without (good sign). The beer itself? Blah and bland (it's supposed to be weisse, not blank!). The Grog (yep, still on after several months) was adequate and flavorful albeit a wee bit weak in mouthfeel. The only thing that keeps me from trashing this place completely was the Bill Player Ale (BPA), which was like drinking Sierra Nevada with hop-flavored Pop Rocks in your mouth at the same time. And, yes, as a former restaurant manager, I, too, caught that whiff of unacceptable aroma--the aroma of a tired city corner grocery market just waiting for the health inspector to say an unkind word or two. And for these beers I paid $5 a "pint" during happy hour--at a time when the better beer at Independence was $3 a "pint". The barkeeper was wonderful and engaging--can I just swap him and the BPA with Independence for their surly waitstaff?

The brewery, bar and small restaurant are located on the second floor of the building. It’s a rather small place, but they have a great bobblehead collection at the top of the stairs. I was really disappointed in this brewery. I had heard good reviews and had been reading about all the awards they had won at the latest Great American Beer Festival. The place had a rather unpleasant sewage-like smell that we noticed upon entering. That can immediately turn you off of wanting to eat or drink anything. My wife tried the Grog, which had just won some awards at the GABF. It was a very good, dark brown English style ale with a slight chocolaty flavor. I tried the sampler, which ended up being very pricy - $2.00 per sample (they were slightly larger than normal samples – maybe 5 or 6 ounces). In addition to the Grog were four other beers. The 700 Level was a good light golden ale with a slightly bitter finish. The second beer I tried was the 60 Shilling, a Scottish style ale that had recently won a silver medal at the GABF. It seemed like this batch had gotten seriously contaminated. It had an awful sulphury smell that my wife thought smelled like a wet fart. It’s probably not a good idea to ever actually try a beer that smells like a wet fart, but I ventured a taste. It had a really strange off taste and was absolutely undrinkable. I really wish that the brewer would take a beer off line when these sorts of problems occur; it can’t be good for business (there’s always going to be some jerk like me telling everyone how terrible it was). The next beer I tried was a holiday beer called the Sled Wrecker. It was a spiced ale with a bit of fruit and molasses. I don’t care much for spiced holiday beers, but this one was fairly smooth and drinkable, though I still don’t think I’d want to drink a whole pint. The best beer in the bunch was the BPA (Bill Payer Pale Ale); a very good, hoppy, West Coast style pale ale.
Overall, most of the beers here were actually quite good, but the smell of the place and that one awful skunky beer really ruined the whole experience for me.

Meant below to say of the 3C's: not enough malt support rather than not enough hop support. Lest someone think my tastebuds are dead.

Perhaps not the greatest beer destination in Philly, but defintely the funkiest. Atmosphere strikes me as the kind of bar you'd find near a big university -- not the kind that's packed with jocks and frat boys but the kind that caters to the grad students and pierced/tattooed/vintage-clothing indie rockers. And that's not a bad thing. Top it all off with an impressive collection of bobbleheads on display in a glass case. A disclaimer on the beer list proclaims, in essence, that if you don't like one of their beers, it's your fault for not having a sufficiently broad beer palate. Quite a bold statement, and one that ultimately gives false hope. My favorite beer was the Monkey Knife Fight, an spice beer with ginger and lemongrass with a lighter lager base. It was quite tasty, refreshing, and a successful experiment. Seemed like something one would drink on a beach in the Asian tropics. The IPA didn't have enough hop support in my estimation (though it's basically done to the expected style for better or worse); the Grog English Brown had an abundance of fruit notes that made it an interesting beer but not to style; the 60-shilling Scotch ale was too hop-forward for a Scotch beer and lacked sufficient malt or body. All in all the beer was not bad, but if you're going to issue a challenge to your patrons (we dare you simpletons to find credible fault with our exceptional beers) then you better be able to deliver. They didn't. Also, another reviewer noted that they don't offer Nodding Head glasses for beer travelers. As an avid beer glass collector, this was a disappointment. Still, I give it my recommendation for punkish-hip atmosphere, competent (if not outstanding) beers, and experimental daring.

A very interesting variety of Beers, good food and a fetching barmaid who knew her Beer made this a very pleasurable visit. The names of the beers were on the quirky side but the quality was outstanding I really enjoyed the double IPA, The Monkey Knife Fight left a breath of ginger on my pallet which could bring me back for another even though I'm not much of a Lager drinker and the Berliner Weiss was an amazing summer experience. The place kept my head knodding!

The bartender I had while at the Nodding Head was very enthusiastic about the beers and very knowledgable. I was allowed and encouraged to have a free sample of every beer available and particularly enjoyed the Very hoppy 3-C Extreme double IPA and the Grog (a "dark, smooth, English style brown ale.") The Grog was probably the best I sampled, being very smooth and having little or no bad aftertaste. The food was a very pleasant suprise. I had the salmon, which came with fairly fresh steamed vegetables and rice pilaf. Overall a very pleasant experience with both the food and the beer.

Nodding Head has great beer, but I get the impression that it could be a much better establishment. The bartender didn't seem excited to be there, and wasn't excited about the beers. From the reviews on this site it seems like Nodding Head gets a lot of out of state travel and could benefit from selling Pint glasses or the like, but they don't. Again, good place but it seems like there could be more. I had the Wee Heavier scottish Ale, and it was awesome, such a balance of flavor for such a strong beer.

Stopped by for dinner while on a visit to Philly, & hope to return. Waiter was knowledgeable, but he should have warned me off the grog as an opener. Menu says it's a brown ale, and it's great, but malty & way filling. Entree was excellent, & oatmeal stout was a worthy dessert.

Upstairs bar, with about 12 seats and plenty of standing tables--roomy. Dining area adjacent. Bartender friendly, loud, boisterous. Makes regulars and a visitor like me feel comfortable. 5 beers on tap, with one repeated on hand pump. Spring Ale a little light for my taste, but refreshing. 60 shilling--mild, session beer. BPA had a great malt/hop balance with Cascade shining through. Cask Oatmeal stout, very drinkable. My favorite was the Grog, listed as a British Brown Ale. Very coffee-ish, sitting right on the border of a porter or a stout. Lots of flavor; enjoyable. A neat place on this tiny street--don't look for on street parking unless you get extremely lucky like I did--plan to stay a while and enjoy!

This was the first bar I came upon just by chance when I moved down to Philly and I've been an ardent fan ever since! Weekdays are good if you just want to enjoy some good beer and be able to hear the conversation of the person sitting next to you. I highly recommend the Grog (a warm, rich stout minus the bitterness)--and the 700 Ale (light & crisp pale ale) but if you are unsure of what's good just ask your friendly bartender for samples of each of the beers and they are more than willing to comply. Weekend nights are a bit more packed but definitely a lively, fun crowd--a definite good time for a fri/sat night out for drinks either alone or as a group. The food is delicious but the majority of it is definitely more sophisticated and difficult to eat if you can't get a booth on the more crowded nights (rest assured they still have great fries and other appetizers to nibble on at the bar or at one of the standing tables). Overall the Nodding Head is always guaranteed to be a good time anytime!!
