After living in Chelsea, I really like coming here for English soccer. Most of the staff is cool except for two bartenders. One has a mullet and the other one has cornrows, despite being white. I think his name is Courtney. This kid has a mega attitude and his sevice sucks.

This place is a godsend for us out-of-towners who are looking for great food, great beer, and a welcoming staff. Having well-positioned flat screens showing hockey, rugby, and soccer while dining on hearty portions of well-prepared food presented by beer-wise (and attractive) staff made Piper's a welcome surprise during forays to the South Side. I would encourage any traveler searching for a place to whet their whistle in comfort while staying in Pittsburgh to make it a point to visit Piper's Pub. Cheers!

I had a duvel and the gaelic irish soup.
I've never had a better soup in my life. The duvel gave me quiet a kick. If you want to try pipers, watch a little rugby, and an import, try that combo.
I'll definitely be going back.

East End was on tap when I went for lunch yesterday. I had never been in Piper's before. It looks kinda dark and smoky through the window, but it's neat and tidy and bright inside. There are maybe 20-25 taps; I had EEBC's Big Hop and an enormous chicken shepherd pie that left me too full for a second beer; I am still not hungry this a.m. as I type this. My daughter had artichoke/red pepper dip in a bread bowl and ended up taking some of it home (she drank an iced tea -- she was driving). This feast ran us $23. I was hugely pleased.
A few tables over a man was eating a sandwich that appeared to be made with an entire loaf of bread and either a pile of fried fish or a couple chicken breasts on it, I couldn't tell which. It may be the biggest sandwich I've ever seen in person.
The service was first-rate and efficient. But then, there are so many eating/drinking options on the South Side that I can't imagine a place that provided lousy service would last for more than a few weeks. Piper's tries to distinguish itself by being more of a British/Irish pub, which works on the menu (several dishes with bangers and the like) better than in overall atmosphere, tho I've never been to England or Ireland, so what do I know?

Hey Janet, Sorry the East End Brew wasn't flowing at Piper's during your visit, but thanks for asking for it by name!
Next time you're in town, be sure to come by the brewery during "Growler Hours" (listed on my website), where I can guarantee there will be LOTS available!
Cheers, Scott

Last weekend was my 2nd visit to Piper's Pub. This is a nice bar, right on Carson, with an interesting cross-section of clientele...a good place to people watch. Bartender was attentive and friendly.
Specifically was looking for an East End Brewing Beer, which was not available. Would have settled for a Hop Devil, but that was not on either. Both were available at my last visit in October. Pint prices are rather steep, averaging $4.50-5.00 each, but stopping for one will not break the bank. Food being served looked and smelled good, but we weren't hungry.
The one thing I must complain about is the condition of the rest rooms. The ladies' room looked like it hadn't been serviced in quite some time. No TP to be found anywhere and the paper towels were almost gone. That's the only thing I found that needs improvement.

Stopped for dinner on saturday 10/29 before heading to Penguins hockey game. Hard to believe that I was a first time visitor being that I've barcrawled Carson dozens of times over the years. The Piper's Pub burger was awesome! Best that I've had in years. Beer selection was nice with many rare imports on tap as well as a few USA micros. Went with the can't miss Victory HopDevil. Asked about the East End BigHop but was told that it was taken off due to "production issues"... bummer. Bartender was super. Love this place and will be back again in the spring.

British pub character, spartan, with a 10-seat bar. Bar is well-stocked for those into the hard stuff. 25+ taps with a good varity of imports and micros. Got to try the Big Hop from East Side BC; unfiltered, lived up to its name, tasty. Happy Hour specials 5-7 M-F on draughts and apps in the bar. Comfortable place--I'd make it a regular stop if I were local.

I was very impressed by this Pub. The beer selection was top notch all around. I have never seen such an impressive beer selection. The food portions where very large and great! I had the Chicken pot pie (awesome) and my brother had Toad in the Hole. (different and great) I saw beers on tap I haven't seen on tap in the US. Such as Spaten Octoberfest, Belhaven scottish ale, strongbow, fillers, old speckle hen, spaten optimator, pilsner urquell, franzishaner weissbier, McEwans (personal fav, a black mac), framboise lambic belgium, carsendonk abbey brown ale, plus many many more. 4 starts for tap selection. Not a brew pub, but with the top notch choices like this, who needs a home grown beer?

The tap selection is quite nice - and I'm more a draft beer fan than bottle for the most part. All 3 of the drafts I tried were top form as well.
The menu looked more interesting than the typical pub fare, so I opted for the stilton stuffed chicken. Unfortunately, the dish was good (almost so-so) and not great. I'll definitely go back, but think I'll stick with a breakfast or burger.

I've been going to Pipers for 6 years or so now. At first I was worried it might not make it, but it's picked up quite a following in the past few years. Being someone who grew up in England, it's great to see (and taste) the food on their menu (toad in the hole, bangers and mash, irish stew, chicken curry, shepherd's pie, English/Irish breakfast, etc, etc, etc.). The selection of beer is always very good - usually have Youngs, Boddingtons, Guinness, Belhaven, and about another 15 taps of Belgian and British beer. So, if Fatheads is too crowded or smoky, and it usually is, just cross the street to Pipers.

Pittsburgh traces it's early heritage to Scots & English settlers who supposedly don't eat very good food. This restauranrt/pub puts an end to that myth. Start with any one of a large selection of local or english or Scots beers & ales & stouts from the tap or bottles. Or if you must, the best collection of single-malt scotches I have every seen. Don't miss the smoked salmon or the house sampler of appitizers. The food is verry British and unfamiliar to most of us. I like the steak and kidney pie but there are many wonderful dishes to try. It's cheaper than going to Great Britian for a meal.

One of only two bars in Pittsburgh that I am aware of that have hard cider on tap. They have Strongbow - a nice change from Woodchuck which is the only other cider you seem to be able to get around here.
It was not too smoky on the day I visited, clean, pleasant, and the server was very friendly and attentive. My only complaint is that there are not a whole lot of vegetarian food options - but the grilled cheese I had was really good - served on thick bread - and the fries were out of this world! The artichoke dip was also really yummy.

Piper's pub is an Irish/English pub located in the Southside section of Pittsburgh along the popular Carson Street sprawling strip... Pipers has a minimal interior, decorated with several sets that regularly can be found broadcasting what is known to soccer to most of us :)
The beer menu was large enough to take several trips to get through the list. The menu matches the theme and others speak highly of it.

Great Sheperd's Pie. Nice selection of drafts and bottles, although they do tend to gravitate towards British/Scottish (which isn't bad). Definately worth a stop.
