I lived on the corner of mission and el carmel, I have since moved and the liar's club was one of my spots to pregame before going out. It was the highlight of the night most of the time, because of the people who hung out there or the people that work there. Change sucks!!!! I am here in SD from South East Asia where I live now and I had been looking foward to grabbing a beer on the beach and replacing my hoody that I had gotten there years ago. Gonna miss the spot!!!! Hope the peeps of Alpine have their seatbelts on and a football helmet cuz it's a fantastic place!!!

LIARS CLUB HAS MOVED. That was the headline of a personal beer tour me and my partner took last weekend.
We have been booking a little hotel on the beach that is walking distance from Liars Club for five Januarys in row, and this time we planned way ahead. So it was pure luck that we realized the place had MOVED two nights before going down there. They lost their lease at the beach and moved to the little town of Alpine, a short jaunt inland, and near another SD County star, Alpine Brewing Company. So it was well worth a little drive.
The new place is less funky-charming, but equally unpretentious and roomier. It has a sort of booths and brick walled italian restaurant look to it. I have a picture -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/gail/2213380619/ -- alas, my the focus was entirely on my beer and not the overall ambiance. The new menu had lots of great items on it, and the huge grilled shrimp salad I had was a perfect compliment to the huge and rare beers I savored.
I hear they are having the official grand opening TODAY. I am jealous of the kegs they are putting on. Wish I could be there. Congrats, Liars Club!

raised the prices since my last trip out on the coast tiny glasses of strong ale are now 3$ food is still good although that has gone up also the juke box still has alot of the old crumby noise which they expect people to pay a dollar for 3 annoying alternative songs lots of crap beers from russian river one of the most overated of breweries which people praise to fit in a decent deal for beers i guess but alot of people are just programed to pay exhorbitant prices for beer

A small place with an excellent offering of local micro brews. Parking is very difficult so plan to walk if you are not lucky enough to find a spot close by. Again, this is a BEER bar and that is their main focus. I enjoyed visiting with some locals who explained how the place has evolved over time to now become a very popular place to find some awesome beers. Friday nights they offer $2.50 pint night. I ordered a teriyaki chicken sandwich and it was not very good. Go for the beer, not the food. Great place to sip a few brews and watch the people go by and just a few steps from the beach.

While it's unlikely that you'll find Betty White on the panel at this Liar's Club you are bound to find San Diego's best and brightest local breweries showcased here. From AleSmith, Alpine, Port Brewing, Stone and Green Flash the beer selection, both draft and bottle, is second to none. As if the tap selection alone was not enough of an indicator of the management's dedication to San Diego's craft beer scene the bartender went out of his way to furnish us with a pamphlet listing the locations of the area's brewpubs and breweries. That type of service always earns my respect and, whenever possible, a return visit.

If you enjoy hops, this is the bar for you. 30 plus taps when I was there in March, about 1/2 focused on IPA styles. There were 4 or 5 IPA's, 3-4 double IPA's and a couple triple IPA's. Most were West Coast brewers, all beers I tried were fresh. No crap on tap at all.
Don't be put off by the outside appearance of the place. I'm 50 plus years old and the beer selection made me comfortable! The Yardhouse downtown has 4 times the amount of taps, but if you want beers not found elsewhere, the Liar's Club is your best bet. It will be my first beer stop next time in San Diego.
Great sandwich menu as well.

Okay, some of those other reviews are weird... Anyways, we love this place. We came in right after their anniversary party, and they had some amazing beers still on from the weekend. They always have great beers from AleSmith, Alpine, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Pizza Port, Russian River and Stone - this time I counted 5 Russian River beers, included the hard-to-find Pliny the Younger. We had Double Daddy from Speakeasy, the aforementioned Pliny, Alpine Exponential Hoppiness, Ballast Point Dorado, and Bear Republic Racer X. Obviously we come here for the hops! The food was as great as it always is, and our server (someone new and very knowledgeable) was professional and friendly. Atnosphere is comfortable here, and we dig the jukebox. We don't come here often, but as I was taking a friend to the airport, this was a good detour. Liars' Club is always worth the trip.

I walked into this bar with my girlfriend on a sunday afternoon. There were only like 4 dudes in the establishment that looked hungover attempting to watch early action football on Sunday Morning. The whole place was staring at my girlfriend and I as we we sat at a booth in the center of the restaurant. The server was a lesbian who seemed to be hitting on my girlfriend, and the bartender was the biggest spaz I've ever seen. He was very loud, obnoxious and he put too much effort into trying to showoff in front of everyone. Kudos to the food...unfortunately the cook looked like a crackhead they hired off the street, nonetheless the food was very good. This place is a dive bar meets restaurant sorta atmosphere with quirky colorful walls and obnoxious servers.

i was back in town for business once again, wanted to see if the place was still serving the big beers and if the employees are still ripping off the place yes they are, once again that tall guy who acts like he is on cyrstal meth was once againg bartending and his name is jay, i can,t believe he is still working at this place, once again i bought a huge mug of ale(wipeout ipa) awesome hop monster, he took my 5$ and 1$ tip and put them both in the tip jar, seriously if the owner reads this, get a new system like a computeriezed system and get rid of the paper which i,m sure the help has copies of the exact same thing from some restaraunt supply store, they write out different tickets and pocket the $ i,m sure, but first at least get rid of that thieving idiot who you probably think is your friend , take some advice from someone who has been around

some times i come down from LA and hit this place up, well things sure are different now,all beers over 8% must be served in tiny glasses. you used to be able to get all those great beers in huge mugs and pints. now you can,t even get them in pints, why not? other places serve high abv beers in pints.this place is going down in a hurry, thats what people do when they are not making money they raise prices but it is faulty logic, anyway let the truth be told

Wow! Great selection of local beers - Alesmith, Alpine, Ballast Point, Coronado, Green Flash, Pizza Port, Stone, Oggi's - They're all here! I counted 3 double IPA's, 4 Belgians, 3 red ales, 2 barley wines and various others all on tap. This time we had the Russian River Pliney the Elder double IPA, Alpine Exponential Hoppiness, AleSmith Speedway Stout, and Russian River Salvation - not a bad one in the bunch. But we don't come here just for the beer; the food is incredible. The burgers here are easily the best in San Diego, and the ahi sandwich is one of our favorites. On Fridays, they have $2.50 local beer drafts - and most of their list is locals. They don't pour macros - pretty surprising for a place at the beach. I did see some macro beer taps, however; they were attached to the urinal trough in the men's room - you get to pee on the Coors Light and Bud Light taps! The jukebox is another highlight of this place; they have a great selection of punk, alternative, roots rock, and some other oddities. I don't think I've ever seen The Gun Club or James White on a juke before! The decor is also rock oriented with various pop art concert posters on the walls. The service was very good, our bartender, Jay made some very good reccomendations, both on the food and the beer. He was very knowledgeable, and even though he was very busy, he made sure to check on us often. The other server, Andrea was also very friendly and helpful. Check this place out - we reccomend it to all of our friends. They've converted me to a local beer advocate.

went on a busy friday night when beers from southern cal r 2.50 a pint, it got kinda late but they had to close at midnight, that sucked, the beers were good high end stuff, alesmtih, stone, alpine, the help r kinda nasty especially the 2 twins who act like their gods gift to man when actually they r nasty looking and snobby, thought southern cal would have some hot chicks tending bar, still recommend the place though, gets crowded on fridays so watch out

well, i was in town for business staying at the catamaran, heard about this pub, i had my business suit still on from a late engagement,i ordered a big mug of Celebration, the bartender a tall guy with a serious attitude(maybe a drup user),he took my 5 dollar bill and dollar tip and just put it in the tip jar, didn,t go near the register,i feel sorry for the owner of this place, seemed a nice place and to have it ruined by the help, well, it is a shame, had to leave early the next morning so just had the 1 beer but the food looked good

If you love beer...live here! I can only complain about the parking and the illegible bathroom graffiti...otherwise a perfect score. Huge beer variety, priced right. Ahi sandwich was dy-no-mite. Close quarters and a dart player nearly cut short my time on planet earth, but I'll brave a pricking for real ales out of the cask!

A nice unpretentious neighborhood bar with a GREAT beer selection. We visited this week and enjoyed the Liefman's Kriek on tap (reccomended by our bartender, Jay). We also had the Petrus Sour Brown Ale and a few local double IPA's. Amazing selection, we couldn't try everything that we wanted. For food we tried the ahi sandwich and the catfish - both were excellent. Jay (bartender) & Rea (server) were both very pleasant and knowledgeable. A great experience that I will tell my friends about!

Obviously, you must be a total jack-ass. I've brought business partners and family members to this bar BECAUSE of the great food, drink and service. If you got snubbed by the waitstaff, I'd bet it was YOUR fault. Do us all a favor and don't come back.

I came here based off of recommendations on PubCrawler, and I have to echo those recommendations. The beer was incredible. One of the few bars by beer geeks for beer geeks. And the prices! Only $3.25 per pint... that's incredible for the beers I got. A double IPA, a 12% Coffee Imperial Stout... WOW! Our server (can't remember his name, but he looked like Elvis Costello) was very knowledgeable and friendly. He gave great advice. I wish I hadn't eaten beforehand, as the food looked great. I raved about this place upon returning home, and I'd definitely check it out again. Thanks, Liar's Club, for fighting the good fight.

Oh my God! This place rules! 4 double IPA's on tap and a great selection of the best of the locals. Alesmith Speedway Stout, Russian River Pliny The Elder, Stone Ruination, Maredsous, Maudite, & more - all on draft! Wow! Great service from Erica and great food, too! Not too stuffy, just a great neighborhood feel. Cool jukebox, too. Casks on Friday night along with $2.50 local drafts - cool. Heard about this place from The Celebrator, & it was right in my backyard!

THIRD TIME HERE, BUT I'M ALWAYS IMPRESSED WITH THE SELECTION. THIS TIME I HAD THE PLINEY IPA FROM RUSSIAN RIVER (RECCOMENDED BY MY BARTENDER, RIA), IT WAS INCREDIBLE! ALSO TRIED THE DOGFISH HEAD 90 MINUTE IPA, BUT THE RUSSIAN RIVER WAS FAR SUPERIOR. MY FRIEND ORDERED THE STONE RUINATION (ON TAP!)- WE'RE HOP HEADS. I BELIEVE THE GREN FLASH BEER THAT THE PREVIOUS REVIEWER COMPLAINED ABOUT WAS THE ANNIVERSARY ALE, A MEDAL WINNER IN THE STRONG ALE CATEGORY AT THE 2004 WORLD BEER CUP - HE MUST NOT HAVE TRIED IT! WE DID, IT WAS SUPERB. WILL BE BACK SOON TO SAMPLE THEIR ASSORTMENT OF DRAFT BELGIAN BEERS. OH YEAH, THE BURGERS WERE EXCELLENT, AND WE LOVE THE JUKEBOX. CHECK THIS PLACE OUT IF YOU REALLY LIKE BEER, AND WANT TO GET AWAY FROM THE YUPPIE BREW PUB SCENE.
