This MacGregor's location has improved dramatically over the past few years. Several years ago you had to stand on your head to get someone to fill your beer. No so any more. Service is very good and the variety of beer is excellent. The bar tenders seem to be much more knowledgable about the beers too.

Was on a beer tour with a friend and had to stop here if only so he could see what 125+ taps in one location was like. He concentrated on nitro pours and wasn't unhappy, I tried a variety and was equally pleased. Magic Hat Double IPA was on, I found it a bit harsh. Southern Tier is always a good choice and the few of their brews I had were excellent. Definitely stop in when in town, but don't try to taste them all!

As a former Rochester-farian I would give the MacGregors's group some props. There are never enough places west of Roch, sometimes east that have better selection than this. Not all are great but you can always find a very excellent brew in the list...brewer from bOulder, Co

125+ taps, so it's hard not to find more than a few favorites. I always am suspect at extreme multi-taps with regards to beer freshness. Don't know that I've ever gotten an "off" beer here or at any MacGregor's location, so I guess that says something. (Always be careful of the first pour of the day at any beer bar however!)The menu at all MacGregor's is the same: soup, salads, apps, sandwiches... As far as the service, I have noticed a drop off from day staff to night staff when I've been there. Not to the point of being bad service, but a lower level of attention to the customer. Obviously that goes with a bigger nighttime crowd, but other bars seem to cope, so... If you want to try a LOT of different beers, this is the place.

For those unfamiliar with MacGregor's, a little history is in order. The original location is at 381 Gregory St. in Rochester. Over the years, other locations have been opened, but this isn't a franchise; the owners have simply added new locations. It isn't exactly a "chain," either, to my way of thinking, at least, because each location is unique. It's not like TGIF's, where you walk in and it looks exactly like every other TGIF's you've ever been in. That's primarily because each MacGregor's has gone into an existing building, so that the interior layout reflects the size and shape of the building. No two of them look alike. The only unifying thematic elements are pretty basic: black & white floor tiles, pale green walls, same style furniture, etc. And, of course, beer - lots of it. To me, all other MacGregor's locations are to be judged by reference to the Gregory St. original, which is still the best. So where does the Jefferson Rd. location fit in? Well, for beer selection, it's got the best, I believe. Certainly the most taps (although I think there are a few repeats among the taps). However, the customers at Gregory St. tend to be the most adventurous beerwise, so any rare beers that you see at Jefferson Rd. are likely to be on tap at Gregory St. as well. What distinguishes Jefferson Rd. is its size. It's very large (it used to be a live music club). The bar is rectangular a la Cheers. There are dining areas on either side of the bar (in what probably used to be smoking and non-smoking). If you just want to hang out and talk with friends, or just want to have a terrific beer by yourself, it's fine, but don't expect any intimacy. The sheer size also means that, despite the familiar touches that let you know that, yes, this is a MacGregor's, it inescapably has something of a chain-bar feel to it. Go if you're in the area; but if you can make it to Gregory St., go there instead for a better overall experience.

The two beers I had were in excellent condition; the Ithaca Flower Power IPA I had was actually better than the sample I had at the brewery. But with that many taps, damn, man, I'd like to see a little more adventurous beers. There were only five I hadn't had before (and two of those were nondescript lagers). They did have a Chimay White tap, which was cool to see, but otherwise there were a lot of the usual suspects. Or maybe I'm just whining because I like the atmosphere at the original Gregory Street location better. Way better.

This isn't a forum for disgruntled former employees to flame the ownership of the establishments!

As a former employee I can tell you their restaurant runs well based on the beers, not by how they treat their employees. I have never met such mean, snotty owners in my life who blatantly flaunt the labor laws.
