Just received the news that the Red Lion is closing its doors. Its about time, this place was in its death throes over a year ago. Mike M. should have let the place die after Mike B. left. You created more problems for the Red Lion with your thinking and your beer making ideas. Don’t you know that recipes are for when the beer comes out good and you want to make more? You need to follow them. Not just throw some stuff together and call it beer. We do know who ran the place and who knew how to brew good beer, not your kind of swill. Too bad for the Red Lion the good owner left. Mike M. you need to go back and sell your shoes, you might do better at that instead of brewing beer. If you read this Mike B. its to bad, you had a great idea and after you left Mike M. ran into the ground and killed it.

The Red Lion is an excellent place to have a microbrew and some good wings. The most important aspect of the Red Lion is it's location, on the Black River. The Pale Ale is amazing in my opinion but the Stout lacks the punch I was seeking in a dark brew. Overall it is a Great place to have some drinks, have a plate of wings and share good times.

My question is what happened to the Red Lion? I have not been to the Red Lion since last year. I heard that the owners have changed or something and it is very apparent by the service, the food and the beer. There were only four people in our party, which took 15 minutes to be seated with only 2 or 3 table occupied in the restaurant. It was that long before we saw anybody. We received our menus and promptly ordered what I could remember as good beer. We received our beer, which after tasting it seem very apparent that they had been watered down, to thin for style, and in one case had something like a “Band aid flavor”. The Northern Light tasted like Michelob light, is the pub selling Michelob Light for their Northern Light? Our waitress then informed us that she would be right back for our orders. After about 25 minutes, and not seeing our waitress I got up and went to the bar to get another beer and found our waitress serving beer there with the owner sitting right there. I was informed again she would be right over for our order. By this time another group was seated and had their order taken. They had their salads before we had given our order to the waitress. By the time we had gotten our order for cheeseburgers and sandwiches this other group who had come in behind us had already ate, paid and left. By this time our little group was just a little heated by the lack of any kind of service, lack of concern by the owner, and the lack of good food, one of the burgers came out frozen in the middle. The owners only concern about our meal and the lack of service was to try and give us a “Couple of Drink Chips” for our next visit. Even after explaining that with the service, the beer and the food, we had received we would never come back to his place.

First of all, I feel if you are submitting a review you should learn how to spell, even in the back hills of Kentucky I am sure they can spell “those” properly. Second, I feel the beers are excellent! The beauty of most nano/micro brews is they are handcrafted, not mass produced to copy something, but stand on their own. I was talking to the owner on how he filters; not overly done so that body and texture are stripped away. The Pale Ale and Stouts I “sampled” one after another were extremely tasty; I have been making beer for over 12 years myself and would recommend this place to anyone without question. How do the Kayakers like the below zero temps? The Black is pretty fast but not too many can take thoase temps. Beer Sucks!!! Nice Location. Nice building.

Beautiful location right on a river. Kayakers come by doing tricks all the time. The Froth Slosh and Velvet Elvis stout are 2 of my favorite beer. Food is good and ample. Very, very nice.

Visited the brewpub on 09/07/03. will not be returning. The beer was undrinkable, don't think anyone has tasted it recently, they just keep pouring bad beer. the service was horrendous, waitresses more interested in guys watching the football games on a Sunday afternoon then the diners. The food was so far below standard. Nothing was served as it was decribed on the menu. No explanantions from anyone and no concern or interest shown when the beers were returned to the bar and we asked for something else. What a shame, we too live in the Syracuse area and enjoy the ride to Watertown for an occasional lunch. Great location, but apparently no interest from the owners to keep up their standars.

Stopped in at Red Lion two days ago when I was in upstate. Mike Bauer has left, evidently for true personal reasons, and gone home to Pittsburgh. I hope he gets the brewing job he wants there, the man has talent. Meanwhile, owner Mike Martini has taken over the brewing, and he's doing okay. The Velvelt Elvis Stout was perhaps not quite as rich as I remembered, but is still a real smooth jar of black. The Northern Lights golden ale was surprisingly flavorful, and the Mojo ESB was good, if a bit understrength. The only beer I had problems with was the Belgian Devil, which suffered from an overabundance of phenols (maybe a cooler fermentation next time?). Food was surprising, but good: I had a quesadilla that reminded me more of a pirogi, in a really good way--delicious stuff. The deck is killer, with a cool overlook of the rocking rapids on the Black River. I'll be back.

Everyone had their own likes and dislikes, however, I think that Red Lion definitely has alot of potential. For them to take an old abandoned building and turn it into a nice place to eat, drink and relax. Yes there may be room for improvement in some areas, but rather than critize maybe a few suggestions to the owner would be beneficial to all. They now offer Karoke for those who are interested. I have been there several times and think very highly of the Martini family for going out on the limb to bring another brew pub to our local area. Keep up the good work.

I have to agree with Kevin from Fort Drum--this place is bad. The beer was only so-so but the food was awful. I only ordered wings and fries. When the basket of fries arrived, I TRIED to pick up ONE. They were all stuck together like a big wad of potato strings. Out of 4 'temperatures' of wings to order from I had ordered the number 2 (# 4 beging the hottest). I took one bite and thought I had swallowed hell. After the waitress returned from one of her 15-20 cigarette breaks she asked me how the wings were. I commented that they were plenty hot. She said "yeah, they aren't what you ordered, they are the hottest we make but I didn't think you would notice." There were only 2 other people in the place when I was there so there really was no excuse for screwing up the order or getting nasty fries. Thank God for the new NY State smoking law--as many times as the waitress went outside to smoke--had she smoked them all in the bar I'd probably have left with emphasiema (spell?). Maybe I was so disapointed because I had just left Sackets Harbor Brewing, but the trip over to Watertown was a waste. I should have stayed at SHB and had a few more.

My wife and I took some friends out for a farewell dinner. Having heard how great the Red Lion was we decided to try it. What a mistake. The Beers are ok but nothing great. The food was probably the worst I have had of any of the establishments in the area. I know there are few choices but all of our meals were simply awful. To cap that off the service was also terrible. What could have been a lovely evening was completely ruined by the terrible food and complete lack of service. If you are looking for a microbrew and a good meal in the area head to Sackets and forget you even attempted to find the Red Lion.

The new summer raspberry blonde is really nice. My wife liked it , and she hates beer. Nice to see the new herb garden by the front entraNCE. It will be a breeze to add fresh herbs to the entrees, being so close to the kitchen and all. Anxiously awaiting the new batch of wheat beer. ed

I submitted this review a couple of weeks ago but with the recent fire at the PubCrawler site, it has been lost. That review responded to a recent negative review from someone who mentioned the “watered down” beers and the terrible food that the Red Lion is now brewing and cooking/serving. I’ll try to recreate my review. I actually wrote two recent ones, both of which have been lost. In the first, after reading the negative reviews, I mentioned that we were going back to Red Lion that coming weekend (Memorial Day weekend) and we would keep an open mind about the brewery. The second one was after that visit. We have not been to the Red Lion since August 2002 – mainly because in the winter, who needs to drive to Watertown, especially this past winter! One of the negative reviews talked about the “locals” not appreciating good beers and preferring Coors Light, etc. Thus, the brewer has watered down the beers. Every time we had been to Red Lions before, the locals were drinking the Red Lion beers and they touted us to their favorites. When we walked in this last time, only a few (locals) people were drinking Red Lion pints. Most of the people were drinking bottled (ug) beers – like Pabst, etc. We had the Red Lion Oatmeal Stout that had always been good before. One sip of this and we both looked at each other and said “this is the watery-est, thinnest tasting Stout” we have ever had. We tried a sample of Old Frothingslosh that the bartender stated tasted like a Crème Soda. Yep, it certainly did. We didn’t come here for Crème Soda, so passed on that. We also did not finish our Stout – didn’t need to put wasted calories in our stomachs. We decided we may as well head back to Syracuse and have the terrific Middle Ages IPA at our favorite bars in Syracuse. We also understand the food has changed at the Red Lion. Their food used to be terrific – great pasta dishes and jambalaya. Well, they must have fired the chef they had last year. We decided not to try the food since the beer was so disappointing. Red Lion, why did you change? You really are turning away customers who enjoyed the one-hour drive from Syracuse to sit by the river, watch the kayakers and rafters, and just enjoy a few good beers. We'll stick with Syracuse breweries and Sackets Harbor. How sad.

OK. We kept our promise and returned to the Red Lion yesterday on a rainy, dreary day. Our being "down" from the weather continued with our visit to the Brewpub. Tried to keep an open mind since we always liked this place. People there are very friendly. Two (just two) were drinking from pints (so they were drinking Red Lion beers). Everyone else was drinking Pabst, Miller Lite, etc. from bottles. We both had Oatmeal Stout which used to be good. However, one sip and we both looked at each other with the same thoughts. This was the "watery-est" thinnest Oatmeal Stout we have ever had. The bartender gave us a sample of Old Frothingslosh to try, saying it tastes like Creme Soda. Okay, we tried one sip. Didn't go there for Creme Soda, however, and yes it definitely tasted like that. So crossed that off our list, along with the Oatmeal Stout. The rest of the beers, even the Microbeers, were on the light side. This sure will drive away anyone interested in a good brewpub. You might as well rename your place to be just a "bar" because that is what you are now. Didn't try the food - afraid to, after the recent review. In fact, we did not finish our Oatmeal Stout. Who needed the calories and alcohol from lousy beer. May as well head back to Syracuse where there is GOOD microbrewed beer (e.g. Middle Ages!). For sure, this place is now off our list and we will never return. Why spoil such a terrific setting - sit out and watch the kayakers, rafters, on the deck or by the window, have a good beer and good food. You guys really messed up.

We have just read the last 2 reviews and are very disappointed at what we are reading. Our last stop to the Red Lion was last fall (we don't need to go to Watertown in the winter, especially this past winter!). We loved the beer and loved the food. We will keep an open mind when we return later this week. Although we're not looking forward to it. I disagree with the owners that the "locals" don't like stronger beers. Everytime we were there, we sat and talked with the local Watertown people and they were the ones drinking the beers brewed there. They were the ones who recommended different ones to us. And the brewery attracts people from more than just the Watertown area, so why the change? They must have fired their chief cook, as the foods were fantastic. As I said, we'll keep an open mind when we go back and hope it hasn't lost everything.

Was looking forward to my visit. The Days Inn gave exact directions. Decor is nice but small in size. I first noticed everyone at the bar was drinking BOTTLED BEER!! Bad sign for a brew pub!! I ordered the sampler and found all the brews to be very watertown(watered down).Bar tender asked my opinion and I shared my observation. He admitted they were diluted and said the beer drinkers in Watertown are esentially Keystone light/Coors light drinkers and won't order stronger flavored beer. He said and I agreed that they tried to do something nice for Watertown and the towns beer drinking clientel isn't sophisticated enough to appreciate it. It's a real shame.Fortunately Sacketts Harbor Brewing is in near by Sacketts Harbor and the only choice for the Pub crawling micro beer lovers in the region save the Dragons Breath brew pub in Kingston Ontario.

As restaurnat owners we had the WORSE experience of our lives. We feel the beer was very mainstreamed and the food and service were horrible to say the least. many of the items we ordered you were out of and those we received were either improperly cooked or spoiled! Since I own a seafood restaurnat I am very familiar with all types of seafood and I assure you your shrimp scampi would have given me a severe case of food poisoning. Not one of the 5 guests at your table were happy with any item brought to the table. We were even less happy with the lask of acknowledgement or concern for the dissatisfaction. We tried your restaurant for the first...and last time and would NEVER suggest your establishment to even our worst enemy. We will be sure to tell as many people as we can about our experience.

I live in Jefferson county, so it is not far to go to the Red Lion. It certainly gives a small city like Watertown another feather in its cap. The wheat beer is really good.Northern lights is a nice crisp beer. I was totally blown away by the seasonal beer that I had a couple of weeks ago. It was called floshanddosh or something silly like that. It was unbelieveably smooth and had a great taste. Oh yeah the sandwhiches were incredible., My wife really like the chicken and i had the reuben. Very well done. Its nice to see the deck added on to give a nice view of the river. It is also great to see such and old factory building revived to have a new life. Ed murphy

This place isn't bad considering that it is in such a small town. If there was a much larger selection of breweries it probably wouldn't be as appealing. I enjoyed the food a lot but the beer was just okay. They didn't have any dark beers on tap the night I went and I don't really like light beers so I'm not a good judge as to the quality. It wasn't bad but I'm just not a fan anyway. They didn't appear to have a very good selection overall.
