Awesome!

This native Texan has never had the long-sought pleasure of visiting a pub in the UK. But Kelvin Arms (Google that) pretty much represents what I expect. It is most definitely a drinking establishment. Included in the pub package are the prereq dart boards and imported brews, and the assorted memorabilia wall hangings. But, from that foundation, Kelvin extends to become quite a bit more of an entertainment venue. The place exudes a unique personality that is welcome in a world of over-replicated bars. A bank vault, complete with door, set up in the style of a cozy living room with upholstered furniture and table lamps. A secluded dart room, well-lit and well tended by the bar maid. A large selection of – and this is a bit out there – board games. A covered outdoor deck area. A shrine to Sean Connery – complete with the kneeling thing from a church. Add these interesting eccentricities to a well-stocked bar (which includes incredible scotches) and friendly barmen and you’ve got a place that’s worth visiting on a regular basis.

As a Scotsman living in Houston I have gone to this bar in preference to some others in the area, but I don't see what is particularly Scottish about it. The clientelle there during my visits, seemed to be Geordies mostly and some local American students. On my first visit there the owner was on the bar and I found him quite a friendly person - hardly surprising though since like me is also a Glaswegian. However I don't like the Sean Connery shrine at all. I think it is a very tacky and pointless thing. For a Scot in Houston looking for some Scottish beer this is certainly the place to head for. Don't expect any Scottish music on the jukebox though, closest thing you'll find to anything Scottish is Rod Stewart and he of course is a Sassenach from South of the border. It's quiet on a week night though, my partner and I load up the Sinatra on the Jukebox and go into the vault and play scrabble. Alba gu brath! :-)
