I never went to this place but Bob told me it was a stand alone building. One of the biggest drains on the operation of a bar/restaurant/brewpub is the HIGH COST OF LIABILITY INSURANCE,WHICH MUST BE PAID ON THE TOTAL AREA OF THE PROPERTY. INSURANCE COMPANIES HAVE A STRANGLE HOLD ON BUSINESSES. THAT &THE PARANOIA OF A LEGISLATURE THAT WANTS TO CRIMINALIZE ENJOYMENT OF ALCOHOL IN ORDER TO FINE PEOPLE INTO SUBMISSION OF THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY TO SUPPORT THEIR FAT ASSES.

Sheriff's sale, $650K from what I hear. SOLD to a Doctor. No idea if it will be a micro again or he'll sell the equipment and turn it into a Doctor's Office.
Too bad. I can't believe the WB/Scranton area has no micro closer than Bullfrog or Easton. In Bob's defense given the ingredients he was forced to work with the beers were pretty good. I know how much of a hand he had in Weyerbacher's signature beers so I know he's talented. This was an ownership/management failure not a staff or beer problem.

Ok, so here's the story. Maybe the last review that will ever be written about the Blackrock.
There was great potential, and great business, once upon a time. As awful as some of the business pratices were, thanks 100% to the majority ownership (who still owes money all over town, including to many former employees), there were many great aspects to this microbrewery at one time. When the place opened up until January of 2004, the Brew Master, Terry Hawbacker (last name almost certainly misspelled), brewed wonderful & interesting beers, one after the next. After moving on to the Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport PA (who is now blessed with 10-12 wonderful brews on tap at any given time), the business quickly fell apart.
The next brewer, a fellow by the name of Jim, put together a few solid beers, but apparently not enough to please the decision-makers, and was replaced with Bob Davis, formery of Wayerbacher. While Mr. Davis arrived with great potential, he was an absolute failure, not brewing a single good beer out of the 20 or so that he put out. It still remains a mystery, but the word on the street said that one of the last straws on the camel's back was the continued lack of quality that came under the last brewer.
The building remains empty, and any promise of another microbrewery opening has just about vanished, leaving Wilkes-Barre with one fewer place to grab a quality beer. A real shame. As a customer, there were some very fine points: the staff was very friendly and family-esque, some of the management was the same (RJ, especially), and the first brewer, Terry. But I think it was just impossible to stay open with the ownership the way it was, and with the last brewer trying to sell extremely bland, body-less beer at $3 a pint.

I heard it's going to be a seafood restaurant! That really is terrible. They have the equipment in there, I was hoping someone would take it over and keep it a brewpub.

Stopped on my way home from a beer trek. The sign out front said "Closed Lease Available"--too bad, they had some fine beers. Perhaps this phoenix will rise from the ashes?

Heres the scoop crawlers. Black Rock closed for business on Saturday June 26th. Rumor has it the owner is falling way behind with creditors and has to close the doors...probably with bankrupcy to follow. Unfortunately they just secured the bremaster (Bob) from Weyerbacher and his first few beers were very promising. Sad to see it go but I can only hope that with the current owner gone that someone will restart the business under a new name. Hopefully they can hang on to Bob until the change in ownership and liquor license transfer process (60-days at least). Our gut feeling is that someone will re-open this successful turnkey micro-brewery. We've heard several rumors of other semi-local micro's re-opening Black rock under their name but we have no idea how true that is.
Sad because the beer was getting better after losing Terry. The food has been completely inconsistent.....sometimes great sometimes terrible, the managers and bartenders have been very good and the owner a complete disaster. Good bye Pat....hello new name and new owners (I hope). Hang in there J, Meghan, Jeff, Teresa and especially RJ!

Just heard from a knowledgeable local that Black Rock is closed indefinitely, the sign on the door was vague, but it didn't sound good. Anyone have any details?

The beer was great. The brewmaster seems especially welled versed in darker beers, they were both full and smooth with exceptional aroma and flavor. None of the other beers were lacking, and I would especially recommend the IPA. I have lived in Wilkes-Barre for almost 2 months now, and only recently discovered Black Rock. I will be going back at least once a week, and this is certainly where I will entertain all of my personal guests and business associates. The food was great, service exceptional, and the beer is lights-out. I cannot recommend this establishment enough.

Black Rock is in the process of bringing on a new brewer with a Belgium beer background... which will enhance the already basic beer selection...which are good. The Irish Potato Stout and the Anthrosite Ale were our favorites. The food was Very Good! The burgers are to die for. The Black and Blue Burger is an excellent choice. The service was excellent as well thanks to Nicky! I would recommend BRB if your in the area. We'll be back to check out the Belgium brews in the near future....Cheers.

Ive been here in the past and was eager to see if things were as I had remembered, or if they have changed due to recent changes and situations. Although my favorites were not on tap, I found the quality of beer to be as good as in the past. Seven beers were on tap, of these I tried the alt, brown, ipa and porter. I enjoyed the coal porter the most. It was during a Friday happy hour with pints at $2, a free food buffet and entertainment. The barmaid was helpful and pleasant, serving a good crowd about evenly divided between beer and mixed drinks. Definitely worth a trip back!

As part of a routine before attending every game for the baby Penguins at the Arena nearby, my daughter and I stop at the Black Rock. We order the same items every time, and by now the wait staff knows us and knows exactly what we want. OVer the past two years, the quality of the beer has steadily improved, and over the last 6 months or so been awesome. The brewer (Terry?), unfortuately will be leaving withint he week, so if you haven't visited Balck Rock, go now and sample some really fine beer. Hopefully the new brewer will be able to produce beers of the same high quality and originality. The Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport, PA will be gaining a great brewer, who by the way, has great taste in music as well.

I stopped in for lunch on my way accross Pennsylvania. We had a couple of sandwiches which were better than we expected. I had a pint of the IPA and a pint of their Porter. Both were good...nothing special, but good. I don't live anywhere near Black Rock, but it was worth the 15 minute detour off of Rt 80. I'd stop back in if I was in the area
