I'm always comfortable at Mickey's, an unpretentious pub and eatery with an interesting mix of white & blue collar patrons of various social orientations, ages and interests. The atmosphere is laid back and never overbearing. Most customers are friendly without being intrusive and are never confrontational. Conversations are sometimes spirited, but, for the most part, those involved appear friendly and good natured.The pizza is to die for. Other dishes that my wife and I have enjoyed are delicious and reasonably priced. They feature a dynamite juke box and live galic music on Wednesday night and entertainment that includes an open mike on Sunday evenings. On weekends, you'll have the pleasure of being served by Liz, an intelligent, well mannered individual whose demeanor reflects a genuineness not found in most establishments. Liz's contribution to the cozy atmosphere at Mickey's is unmistakable.

I have lived here for 8 years, tried out ever bar in town, and Mickeys goes above and beyond the call of duty. Their staff is incredibly friendly, the food is excellent, and they have a fantastic draught selection. The only way I could see this place possibly improved is if they start serving hot beverages and pie in the winter.

Decided to check in on an old watering hole after a 5-year absence. I had heard rumors Mickey's was struggling a bit after the Madison smoking ban. I don't know what kind of business they do on weekdays but on Saturday evening it was just about wall-to-wall. It still draws primarily from the neo-Bohemian sector of the UW population that forms a large section of the Williamson Street corridor's residents and business clientele. Its retro-beatnik lounge/cafe ambience is well-suited for said clientele, and its distance from campus keeps the frat meathead and sorority trixie count close to zero. Consequently, a mellow atmosphere befitting its ambience is a constant. Beer selection is small but generally of decent quality, with tap offerings from Sprecher, New Glarus & Capital, and standard imports like Guinness and Newcastle. Beer snobs aren't going to find anything here they can't get elsewhere all over southern Wisconsin, but this place is worth the diversion from the downtown/campus area for the atmosphere alone. Grab a beer, sit on one of the lounge couches, and strike up a conversation with young intellectuals-in-training. This is a neat place.

What a unique joint! The couches, lighting, off-beat mood--they all add up to a relaxing way to top off an evening of pubcrawling with a Guinness. If your looking for some place totally different in Madison to unwind in; this is it. The crowd is typical Willy Street: a little off center; but friendly when spoken to. While the beer choices are not overly numerous; they have enough nice offerings on hand--and the bartender took his time in drawing my Guinness: a sure sign of knowledge of the characteristics of that particular brew.

Sadly, Mickey's owner passed away a couple years ago at the tender age of 96 or so. Even in his 90's and barely able to walk, he would come down and watch over his bar. Since his death the bar has undergone some drastic changes. For starters, part of what used to be the owner's apartment (he lived in the same building) has since been opened up and included as part of the bar. It now has a "main" bar area, a sitting room off to the left, and a pool table room to the left of the sitting room. It has also gone from a local neighborhood bomb crater to a local neighborhood respectable establishment. While their best tap selection 2 years ago was Berghoff Dark, nowadays the taps include such offerings as local favorites New Glarus, Capital, and Sprecher, and national/international favorites like Guinness, Anchor and Sierra Nevada. Despite being well away from campus, it still tends to draw out some of the "beatnik" elements of the U-W community. Best of all, it serves as a venue for improv jam sessions of Celtic music on Wednesday nights. Some people drive in from as far away as Milwaukee to join in and play. Anyone who can play an instrument and carry a tune is welcome to join in. What a great way to fritter away a Wednesday night!
