I am cautious about great reviews. I mean come on, can anyone be that good? Well I have been to my share of brewpubs and many just don't measure up. This place measures up. It's the real deal. I tried all of the beers, the ranged from great with the nut brown ale to speachless for the nitrus IPA. The food and service was excellent. I would definately recommend this place, and I will drink here again.

I finally got back here after a few months away. The name change hasn't changed the quality of the beer. The beers:
Hefeweizen-very nice, German-style beer. One of the better Hefeweizen beers you will find on tap at any brewpub.
Belgium Trippel-very sweet and smooth, particularly at 8.9%!
Doppelbock-very dark, big bodied beer. Nice styling at 7.6% ABV. Great beer.
Liz was great at the bar. This is one of the better brewpubs in the valley and in the SW US.

Been a couple of years since we'd been here and the name changed twice during that time, but it all still looked the same. Very good beers we tried (IPA, Nut Brown, Irish (milk) Stout). The Pub Buster pizza (combo) satisfied well. We intend to return for more soon. 3/11 1:30pm

While visiting AZ I found this excellent brewpub on Pub Crawler. It is currently called ZONA BREWING COMPANY. The sandwiches rocked and the beers were awesome. I had the IPA and my girlfriend had the Dopplebock and both were outstanding. Ian was tending bar and was extremely helpful with what else to do in town between visits to Zona. Great beer, great service, great food, they have it all!

First of all, this brewpub is not closing. The beers are very good. I had the Dunkel Weizen which has medalled at the GABF. This is a great beer and one of the best brewed in the Phoenix area.
Helles-very crisp and cold. Excellent lager.

Beer and service was horrible...heard they are going out of business soon...in my opinion the sooner the better!! Are they Cowboys or German? Not the kind of place you want in such a nice neighborhood!

The name has been changed from "Unlikely Cowboy" to "The Cowboy." No management change or brewery change. Same quality product.

Nice place with great beer! Atmosphere made me wonder if they were serious about the beer, but after tasting all 8 available, there was no doubt! They cover the main styles, but also have some unique beers for the serious beer hunter. Barrel Aging, Decoction Mashing,... There's something here for everyone. A bit out of the way, but definitely worth the drive.

Now called "The Cowboy", I think these mid-westerners have decided to stay and be Cowboys. Hmmmm...le's see...new menu and new chef, same incredible traditionally handcrafted beer...ahh love the rattlesnake bites, and bbq selections. Barley Wine is aging, Oktoberfest (Vienna Lager) coming on next. Ryan's World Gold MEdal Dunkel-weizen is now on tap..., Can't wait to go back!!!

Hats off to Ryan and Collin Ashley:"Two of the most Unlikely Cowboys ever!".Please do not pass up the opportunity to try some of their world class beers if you are in the Phoenix area. The brewpub is fairly new(opened in Aug 2002),however, Ryan is a very accomplished brewer with multiple GABF and World Beer Cup medals to his credit. Some may have tasted them in Europe where he received his degree in brewing sciences or at his former place of employment (Mickey Finn's in the Chicago area)..I was fortunate to be able to try all of their beers recently on two separate occasions. Kolsh was light and crisp with a clean malt character. Hefe was out of this world. Bannanna, nutmeg, and clove evident in the nose and then just burst on the palate. Truely authentic german style wheat without the lemon! Pilsner was smooth and dry with a hint of noble hop bouquet. Amber has great mouth feel and body. Munich and caramel malts impart a sweet nutty character that is perfectly balanced by the cascade hops.Dopplebock was phenomenal. Belgian tripple was equally as good. The belgian candied sugar gives a nice sweet mellow mouthfeel and just a hint of alcohol and pineapple come through.Oatmeal Stout(nitro) was soft and creamy with rich flavor imparted by the chocolate and roast malts. The real kicker was out of the hundreds of brew pubs we have been to this is the first one my wife actually wanted to come back to!(Bonus!!) It is also quite evident that the attention to detail is carried over to the kitchen as well. Attention to detail is evident from the moment you walk into this place. Beer is taken very seriously here and sets the standard for craft brewers in the Arizona area.

Pale Ale - cascade nose and finish - almost IPAish Oatmeal Stout - coffee nose creamy, lingering, chocolaty finish - all on nitrogen mix IPA - big floral hop nose - huge finish - great Belgin wit - almost a lambic sourness - but good Amber - grapefruit finish and slightly floral Kolsch - good for a kolsch Pilsner - czech hops come thru with a medium floral nose Hefeweizen - banana nose and flavor - hint of butterscotch and clove - a little too clear for the style, but a great beer. Food - ribs were so-so, fish was ok - should have went with the steak Staff was excellent - ask for Pepsi.

Judging by its name, The Unlikely Cowboy conjured up an image of a Wild West saloon with sawdust on the floor. The reality was totally opposite. It is a very upscale (but not pretentious) restraunt and brewpub, with top quality brews and an incredible menu.

I have found a little slice of heaven in North Scottsdale, The "cowboy" was found by us on this site, so we thought we'd try it. Great choice. The Hefe was probably the best I have ever tasted, The Amber was perfect! And the food was unbelievable. If you are in the Phoenix area, THIS PLACE IS A MUST !!!!!!
