Hats off to Ryan and Collin Ashley:"Two of the most Unlikely Cowboys ever!".Please do not pass up the opportunity to try some of their world class beers if you are in the Phoenix area. The brewpub is fairly new(opened in Aug 2002),however, Ryan is a very accomplished brewer with multiple GABF and World Beer Cup medals to his credit. Some may have tasted them in Europe where he received his degree in brewing sciences or at his former place of employment (Mickey Finn's in the Chicago area)..I was fortunate to be able to try all of their beers recently on two separate occasions. Kolsh was light and crisp with a clean malt character. Hefe was out of this world. Bannanna, nutmeg, and clove evident in the nose and then just burst on the palate. Truely authentic german style wheat without the lemon! Pilsner was smooth and dry with a hint of noble hop bouquet. Amber has great mouth feel and body. Munich and caramel malts impart a sweet nutty character that is perfectly balanced by the cascade hops.Dopplebock was phenomenal. Belgian tripple was equally as good. The belgian candied sugar gives a nice sweet mellow mouthfeel and just a hint of alcohol and pineapple come through.Oatmeal Stout(nitro) was soft and creamy with rich flavor imparted by the chocolate and roast malts. The real kicker was out of the hundreds of brew pubs we have been to this is the first one my wife actually wanted to come back to!(Bonus!!) It is also quite evident that the attention to detail is carried over to the kitchen as well. Attention to detail is evident from the moment you walk into this place. Beer is taken very seriously here and sets the standard for craft brewers in the Arizona area.

Ryan Ashley, brewmaster and partner, along with another brewer, Collin, show a passion and enthusiasm for providing excellence in beer, food and service. The hefeweizen was the best I've tasted in sometime. And the rest of their brews were top notch. Stopped by there at the suggestion of one of their competitors - that surely says something about The Unlikely Cowboy.
