Awesome! Great N/A Awesome! Awesome!
I started my night with dinner at Bricktown. However, they were closing at 8 due to lack of business. Not wanting to head back to the hotel and do nothing, I asked the bartender of someplace close, and they told me how to find the Lift, which isn't really that easy as it's underground. Instantly I fell in love with the place. The ambiance is great, the beer good (Millstrem beers on tap) and the service good, and knowledgable. I watched a local order a Hefeweisse (obviously not really knowing what he was ordering) and declining it in a glass. So the bartender rolled the beer to stir up the suspended wheat. Nice touch!

I've been back everytime I've been in town (which is every 3 or 4 months), and it is, by far, the best place to get a good beer in town. Apparently the Bricktown bartenders agree, as both of them walked in the door within minutes of their shift finishing! If you ever are in Dubuque, this is a must-see.

I was warned not to come here so I automatically figured I’d like it just as quick as I like any movie the critics hate. I was instead told to go to some dump down the street with a better beer selection but where no one would move even an inch so I could get to the bar and the bartender walked by me three times and ignored me. The few looks I got told me I “didn’t belong there” so I did everyone a favor and left and wandered back up Main Street to the Busted Lift. Was I glad I did.

This is downright the friendliest bar I have even been in, bar none (pun intended). Barmaid Teal (nice name) made us feel right at home, and even got to practice her Spanish with other half. The bar is located downstairs in and old mill (with a busted lift), and has the kind of ambiance only a “step-down” can offer. There is a smaller bar in the front room, and a much larger bar in the back where the band was setting up. I didn’t plan on staying at first, so the doorman agreed to let me in without paying the cover (try that in Albany). In three minutes I knew I was home, so I headed back upstairs and gave him the $6 for the both of us. They only have 12 or so taps, but a nice variety of good stuff – Flying Dog, Bass, Guinness, Harp, Millstream, Newcastle, Pilsner Urquell, Goose Island, Etc. The owner came by several times and chatted the place up, as well as everyone else at the bar. I’ve never met a friendlier bunch of people in one spot in my life. At one point I heard a freight going by out back, so I headed out with my beer to watch it (OK, I’m a train buff). The door person out back was slightly amused at my hobby, but didn’t seem to care that I walked out with a beer in my paw. Try that in Albany and 37 cop cars will show up and you’ll end up in the same jail cell along side a serial killer.

I came to Iowa to play ball at Field of Dreams. That was the highlight of my trip, but the Busted Lift was an added bonus. And I can’t wait to get back!

It's about time this establishment made it on to Pub Crawler! If you visit the Dubuque area, go here. This is, quite possibly, the best bar in the state--excellent beers, a friendly staff, and a great atmosphere. I wish they could pull it out of the ground and plant it in Iowa City, so I could visit more often.
