The Berghoff family owned a brewery in Ft. Wayne, Indiana in the 19th century. When the 1893 Columbian Exposition was organized in Chicago, the Berghoffs apparently decided to set up a beer and snack stand on the site of the Exposition. The food and beer were very popular, and so the family decided to open a regular restaurant in 1898. The Berghoff Restaurant, and its memorable german food, have been a fixture in Chicago ever since. In the main dining room, one can see some handsome paintings of the 1893 Columbian Exposition on the walls, an excellent piece of Chicago history. This is reputed to be the oldest existing restaurant in Chicago. At the end of prohibition in 1933, the Berghoff obtained the first legal liquor license in Chicago. It was recently announced that the Berghoff would be closed in February, 2006. One hopes that someone will see the wisdom of keeping this landmark restaurant in Chicago open, if the younger generation falters.

Lame lame lame. For tourists and Financial District power-lunchers only. Unexceptional house beer contract-brewed by unexceptional Joseph Huber in Monroe, WI, and guest taps are a has-been cast of the usual suspects: Corona, Amstel Light, Beck's, etc. Food is authentic German like Don Pablo's is authentic Mexican. For a better German drinking/dining experience, take the Brown Line L up to the Western Avenue stop and peruse the several German establishments in the Lincoln Square neighborhood (Huettenbar, Resi's, Chicago Brauhaus, etc.)

One of the nicest bars I’ve been in. Unfortunately, I am strictly referring to the woodwork, the tile floor, the ornate back bar and mirrors, and tin ceiling. This place could be a gold mine, but . . .
I hate to see places like this (try to) live on a reputation of a hundred years ago. You are not the only game in town anymore, and reputation doesn’t pay the bills. I knew we were in trouble when I first came in and spotted Jose, (aka Wayne Newton) and his cousin Carlos wandering aimlessly behind the bar. It amused me for a while until I really did want a beer and corralled their attention. Having to select from a total of five beers on tap, I just started at the top with a Red Ale. Being beered out, Better Half wanted a Mud Slide. Oh boy. I politely told him what went into one, and was met with three solid minutes of dumb looks and confusion. He finally got all the ingredients into the glass as I finished (gulp) the very oxidized and stale Red that was made about the same time Ulysses S. Grant was finishing up his house in Galena.
Never to have just one regardless of all indications the next will not be any better, I ordered the Oktoberfest. It had the proper maltyness to it and the flavor almost came through, and it might actually be a decent beer had the lines been cleaned since The Cubs last won the World Series. Unfortunately, it also had the same oxidized and stale nose and subsequent flavor.
I found someone that spoke English who told me the beer was made by Huber. I suspect if you visit the brewery in Monroe WI the beer ain’t half bad. In the meantime, I’m guessing the Berghoff is the place for the three-martini lunch. With that said, this is a beer site. Skip this place – there’s way too many good joints in Chicago to waste time here.

Great. Fantastic German food. Good old fashioned stand up bar; service is very business-like. Berghoff beer is solid, although hardcore fans of craft beer will think it's too light - it's all well made and tasty, but you won't find any of the bolder, hoppier styles. Still, I love the Berghoff.

This German bar and restaurant has stood at the heart of Chicago's Loop since 1887. It's still essentially a tied house to Berghoff Beers, although the beers are now contract brewed in Wisconsin by Huber. Lots of history, traditional German food. The beer selection is limited to Berghoff Regular, Dark, Amber, a weisse and a seasonal special (it was Hazelnut Winterfest last time I was there). Decor is heavy with old style bar fixtures. Beer is not exceptional like, say, a Goose Island or Flossmoor Station, but still tasty and, at $3.25 a glass, a good deal for a downtown bar. They also have Berghoff-branded root beer and whiskey.
