This bar/restaurant is comfortable- dress up or wear jeans, doesn't matter. The staff are attentive and good-looking for the most part. Most beautiful female servers in the tri-state area. The bartenders are fast, the lights are low, and the music is loud. You can order anything from a pint of beer and chicken wings to a pomegranate martini and steak diane. The place has four large rooms and two bars at opposite ends. There is a dance floor in one room, a pool table in another, and plenty of seating everywhere.

Wow. I just read my last review. I guess all I can say is what a difference a couple of years make. The Bayou is no longer another storefront on Restaurant Row – it’s a destination. It’s taken me months to post this but it’s only gotten better.

You only need to pass through the doors once and you’re no longer a customer – you’re a good friend. Rit and Nick, who as a team are the finest two publicans north of Key West, keep uncanny track of your secret desires and what best to introduce to your taste buds on any particular evening. And they do it with class, style and flair. If you are three back in the crowd, don’t worry, you won’t wait for a drink.

Just a sampling of what’s on right now: Harpoon IPA, Rogue Dead Guy, Rogue Mocha Porter, Amstel Light, Bass, Magic Hat #9, Victory Hop Devil, Dos Equis, Wachusett Blueberry Wheat, Anchor Steam, Smuttynose IPA, Blue Point Toasted Lager, Murphy’s Red, Brooklyn IPA, and Hennepin. Hennepin on tap? Oh my. Good thing I bring a driver. And as I can now say I am a "regular," I have not gotten a bad beer here in the years since.

The food here has a Mexican flair to it and is incredible in quality, portion size and price. You have to try the steak Fajitas – we keep coming back to those as much as we love all the other dishes.

On Friday afternoons they have great bands in what I’ll call the main bar from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. The place has been added onto over the years with the main restaurant sandwiched between two separate bars and spaces. The back bar is where the late-night action is with bands there as well. With the nice summer evenings we’ve been having, the outside patio has been packed.

I would not know the owner here if he drove over me, nor was I ever in his other place in Glenville. But it’s obvious he had a plan and stuck to it. The Bayou is a jewel not just for downtown Albany, but for the region as well. If this place had a Overall greater than "Awesome" I'd rate it as such.

Awful bouncers. Be warned... they will short change you at the door and/or fight with you for no reason. Bar has potential but it is squandered by poor staff selections. Hopefully management will realize this and fix the situation.

While Bayou is a good venue to view live music on the weekend my main complaint deals with the bouncers/staff. I've had very negative experiences on a couple of occasions at Bayou. Be forewarned not to sit anywhere near the tables next to the exits. My friends and I had been sitting at one of the tables all night and were being tended to by one of the cocktail waitresses when my buddy picked up a drink that was on our table and was prompted thrown out of the bar. Apparently, the drink was for the bouncer, to which we had no knowledge since our table contained several of our drinks. After getting thrown out of the bar my friend was punched in the face five times and knocked into the street by several off-duty police officers who were friends with the bouncers. All the while, the four on-duty Albany police officers (including Officer Noonan)did nothing to stop the beating even when we pleaded with them to do something.

Beer Quality Beer Selection Food Service Overall
So So Great N/A Good So So
33 Taps and some pretty decent beers, until you put your lips to the glass that is. This is a Coors Light cell-phone bar, evidenced by all those around me. The rest of the stuff has been laying around growing old, and is barely drinkable. The Smithwick’s was stale, as well as the Harpoon Summer. I left the Red Hook Rye on the bar as it was so bad (I’ve had this fresh and it’s terrific). At $4.25 a pint for these, it’s unacceptable. The beer list is way in the back behind a video game, which shows their priorities. And sit at that end of the bar and you’ll leave smelling like a chicken wing from the grease and smoke wafting out of the kitchen.

This place survives only because it’s on “restaurant row.” It gets busy after the free Alive at Five concerts on Thursday’s and also for Friday Happy Hour, with again, mass quantities of Coors Light being poured. They have an annoyingly loud mélange of Jazz/Blues/Southern rock playing that makes polite conversation impossible. The bar maid’s pull the handle of the tap you point at, but other than that have no clue what the beer is. Order a silly mixed drink and they giggle on cue.

Skip this place and go across the street to the Big House (for now), around the corner to the Pump Station, or grab a cheap cab to the Lionheart. I do hear the food is decent at the Bayou, but that’s not whey we’re here.
