This place was great. Very laid back atmosphere and friendly staff. You never know what kind of music will be playing either. I've heard everything from Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson to Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers. There are plenty of college students but a fair number of older patrons as well. Insurance agents, engineers, all manner of people who enjoy good beer, good friends and good times. The food is good, bar fare. I like the Buffalo burger, BBQ sandwich and most everything else I have tried. They give you plenty of food for the price as well. I don't know what the one guy below did, but, it must have been pretty bad for the owner to go off on him. He is usually about as easy going as it gets. I suppose some who over-indulge could push enough buttons eventually. Who knows. Anyway, I recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a good beer at a good price and just have a good time.

No idea what the reviewer below me was thinking. The River Mill sometimes have several smokers in the bar but I've never been overwhelmed. Service only applies to bartenders because you head up to the bar to order your food and drinks (no wait staff). Definitely the best beer selection in town and the bartenders really know their beer. Have been in serious beer-nerd discussions with at least two of the bartenders. I love trying every local/craft brewery they get. Go on Mon Tue and Wed nights between 7 and 9 for pint night (every pint of beer 1 or 2 dollars) or any night for good, cheap food. Love the BBQ chicken tacos.

I wouldn't recommend the place. First of all it's where everyone who smokes in Blacksburg goes and the ventilation is horrible. I know smokers who even complain. Second of all don't even slightly complain if the service is bad like I did and the owner of the bar totally freaked out on me and a friend. I will never go there again. I can tell by these reviews that they are old. The original owner was a cool guy, then new owner = stay away.

Great time. New River Pale Ale was fresh and the Celebration Ale on tap was also good. Burgers rocked. Honest place with good folks. Can't speak for other places in Blacksburg as there was no reason to venture any further after tipping a few at the Rivermill.

Huge and awesome chili dogs, massive 20 oz. pints of some spectacular beers (New River Pale, Tupper's Pils, and Blacksburg Brewing beers), cool weathered atmosphere...what more could you ask? How about college town prices, like $2.25 for a 20 oz. New River Pale! Maybe you wouldn't take your mom here, but damn, a great place to go hard on your liver and easy on your wallet.
