Had the stout sampler. six different stouts. Thought I'd died and went to heaven. I usually have the IPA and then go to a stout but with this variety the IPA will have to wait till next trip

Finally made my first visit there last week. What a great place. From the staff to the food to the beer. I wish I lived closer and could bike there like so many people had done that day. Outstanding!

What a great find. One of the finest brewpubs we have been to. Great selection of beers, with a heavy influence on IPAs (not a problem with me). They have an extensive menu of beers they brew on tap. They also put out a high gravity collection in 25oz bottles. My only complaint is I wish you could get the high gravities on tap. Other than that, wow.

Finally got to stop at Short's. Very glad I made the effort. Don't let the fact that it's off the normal path up north stop you from getting there.
Super service. My wife and I were shocked by the friendliness of the staff during our two stops over a two day period. We're from the Kalamazoo area, and be assured, you do not get treated like this at Bell's where they've spent the last 10 years consistantly making you feel like a imposition on their time vs. a customer. All three staffers we came in contact with were great employees and enthusiastic about their jobs. Mr. Short should be very happy with the public is treated there.
Good creative food. They make their own Hummus & pizza's, tried them both - Good! We found some of their beers at restaurants in Petoskey, Boyne City and Elk Rapids. A list of restaurants is on their web site.

What a great spot. Great friendly, knowledgeable staff. All three staffers that we came in contact with were super to my wife and I. As I watched them around the bar, they were hustlin' and smiling with all the other customers.
What a breath of fresh air it is not to get that crappy "you're lucky I'm waiting on you" attitude that is so common at Bell's in my hometown. I actually heard a "thank you" for the tips I left on the bar at Short's.
Very good creative beers, they had 16 on tap that day, between the two of us we tried 7 of them, all good to great. Good menu.

GOTTA HAND IT TO ANYONE WHO TRIES TO START A BREWPUB IN A TOWN OF 1000 PEOPLE AND PUTS PEPPERCORNS, TOMATOES, STRAWBERRIES, ETC. IN THEIR BEERS. BUT IT WORKS. DEFINITELY IN THE BOONDOCKS BUT YOU WON'T FIND MORE CREATIVE BREWS ANYWHERE ELSE. PIZZA WAS GREAT TOO. I CAN SEE WHY THEY ARE EXPANDING. GIVE ME A CALL IF YOU NEED A SILENT PARTNER.

Visted Shorts in Oct on our upper Michigan pub crawl. As you may read in previous posts the beer is one of the best in Mich. and have to agree. Enjoyed the Huma Lupa IPA (IPA fan anyway), sampled many others. Their beer menu is extensive and they are trying new things all the time (check out their web site). Food selection is not that large but is good. Read in a beer magazine that Shorts is planning on moving to a new location, not sure where, but you may want to check before driving there.

Shorts is with out a doubt the best brew pub in northern Michigan! (I would say in the entire state but that would be unfair to the many I have not tried.) I grew up in Bellaire and my brother worked at the hardware store that occupied this building before Joe moved in. And I have to say that the place is beautiful inside, all work was done by friends and people that believed in Joes vision. When you walk in the your hit with the smell of magical brewing goodness. And the beers are outstanding. I have tried them all a few times and its tough for me to make a choice. Its now nonsmoking which is a plus. And the music is always a hit. If you are coming up north take scenic route and stop in. Micro-brew fans can't lose unless they pass this place up.

This place has one of the most amazing IPAs I've ever had. I think it's one of the best IPAs in the state, if not the whole country. It's also a very cool atmosphere. It's a must-visit if you are anywhere within driving distance.

It was nice to be back at Short's. I took a friend there for some brews, lunch and a game of chess. Jer told me the #5 was good and I went with that. Boy, was he right.MMMMMMM! We drank the Village Reserve and the Chocolate Wheat. For a steam beer, the Reserve was great. I got a growler to go for the Penn State/Florida State game. We tried to go to Traverse Brewing on our way home but they weren't open and don't post hours. :( Oh well! Thank you for Short's.

Short's is probably the best new brewery in Michigan. The food, atmosphere and staff are comforting and easy-going. Try the Black cherry Porter, Bellaire brown or even something different with the Soft Parade. Live music and a diverse crowd. I visit Short's atleast twice a month. Anyone up for a road trip????

Had a great time on a Sunday afternoon at Shorts, it is kind of nice being on a first name basis with the bartender (Megan). We had met the brewer several years ago when he was brewing at Jackson and it was very nice of him to take the time even though he was quite busy to sit and talk about his business and beers. He is doing a great job brewing some very interesting beer, every offering was top notch. The music on a Sunday afternoon was very entertaining and the food was delicious. Overall a very good location, and its just down the street from one of the nicest B&Bs in Michigan.

Megan, our Bartender, was awesome. The beer was fantastic. I've traveled to more than 500 brewpubs around the country and this is one of only 5 to actually have a bartender to introduce themselves to me. The food was excellent. On the beer side I enjoyed the IPA and Amber and the Nicie Spicy, their version of a wheat beer was good and interesting...Pepper in a wheat beer, who knew. In the state of Michigan, this ranks up there with Michigan Brewing, Bell's and Dragonmead and it has food.

This spot is quickly my favorite Micro of North Michigan. Nestled in the town of Bellaire that invites you to a beautiful area that is bustling with tourists. It is a beautiful area to have a great Brewpub. This is made all the better with Joe Short who gained a large and strong following from his brief tenure at Zig's. When he left to start his own place in Bellaire, we watched for the opening. Now that it is open, we have finally visited his place. In short (pun intended) this place is great. Plenty of room, great setting, very knowledgable staff, and best of all, great beer. This place is a must to visit. The Huma Lupa IPA is outstanding. Just as good as it was at Zig's. The Anniversary Ale is a clone of the Imperial IPA from Zig's called Machu Picchu. I could go on, but let me say this is worth many, many visits.

13 taps and I thoght I was in for a treat. However, the serve yourself and the overall feel of the place was not my cup of tea. on to the beers...The nicie spicie had a citrus flavor with a slight pepper after taste The Chocolate wheat was a very strong oatmeal like stout that settled smooth. The Bellaire brown was flat to me almost like a light. The Pale ale was also fruity and not as hop flavored as I would like.
This is probably a great place for a younger crowd.

Well this may be a first for me. I didn't go to the beer. It came to me courtesy of a growler from the bar.
I've heard many good things about Joe Short's new pub. I've several friends who've been there and all speak highly of the place. It's summer and the entertainment being booked there is top-notch.
The stout and amber I've sampled are both good. The second batch of stout was better than the first. This is an indication that Joe's getting his act down. He uses enough grain and only slightly over hops the brews. He's learned his lessons well from Larry Bell (yes THAT Larry Bell of Bell's Brewery.) He trained down in Kalamazoo and brought some yummies back North with him. A small point: the amber was a bit more like an IPA. It's that hop thaing I spoke of earlier.
Bottom line? If you're in NW Lower Michigan, make the trip to Bellaire and give Short's Brewery/Pub a try. I 'spect you'll find it well worth the trip.

I was part of a large group touring the state. Everyone that stopped at Short's had a good time. They have 16 taps, with 8 serving brews at the time of our visit. Very unique and excellent beers like Chocolate Wheat and Nicie Spicie. I didn't try the food but heard it was very good.

I was ashamed of my last review and it's lack of detail, so here goes. I tried all the beers availble. The Pandemonium Pale Ale, was very good, well balanced. The Chocolate Wheat was very dark & roasty. Village Reserve.Bellaire Brown was nice and malty, with a little nutty flavor. Nicie Spicie was quite dry and had a nose of black pepper. For a spice beer, usually not on the top of my list, was quite tastey. The Soft Parade is an explosion of fruit. This beer is dry and tart. It is billed as 11% alcohol, but taste like it has none. Be very carfull this beer is wonderfull and lends itself to over-indulgence!!. The Huma-Lupa-Licious was very hoppy. Quite fuity/floral in the nose. A HopHeads delight. The find of the day for me though was the Village Reserve. It was, as billed, Clean, Dry & Hoppy. ALL the beers were very good. At least three, in my opinion, were exceptional. As far as the food, we tried 3 different sandwiches, #1, # 3 & #8. The specialty pizza and the Strawberry Habenaro Salsa. As it was with the beer, the food was exceptional Keep up the great work.

I've tried four of the beers at this establishment. The pilsner was not what I expected. It seemed more on the order of a summer blond. It was OK but just not my taste. The fruit beer is very good, crisp and a bit on the dry side. The India pale ale is outstanding and at 7.2% ABV it's definitely to sip and savor. The regular pale ale is one of the best efforts I have ever tried. Perfect balance between the big hops up front and then a nice malt finish. I understand it took the bronze medal at some big international competition. Try it and you'll understand why. The food is a little bit of a letdown however I go to these places for the brew. Sure would like to see a little improvement in this area. Finally, the atmosphere and ambiance are great. Living in Gaylord I'll be a frequent visitor.

Congrats to Joe. This brewery has been in the works for a long time. Joe has done a great job with the interior. Stained glass, mosiacs in the floors, stone work, wood work, you name it, this place is a work of art. Even has a stage inside. It will give that place in Kalamazoo a run for the "coolest" brewery. As for the beer, I tried all 4 or 5 beers on tap. Sorry, can't remember the proper names, but they were all very good. Crisp, clean, well balanced. The food was also very good. This place is a must vist. Good luck!
