Our last visit to the Dell's brought us to the Essen House, new to us and a pleasant surprise. Drawn by the lure of live polka music this large open German beer hall feels like old Munich in the Dell's. Staff makes you feel immediately welcome. Great selection of German beers also some micro brews. The ducks, chickens and ham hocks in the front window rotisserie make your mouth water. We had large steins of beer and a snack platter of cold meats and cheeses. Sure to return whenever in the area.

This is apparently a fairly new German restaurant patterned after the Essen Haus in Madison. This place is located in a little German village area in downtown Wisconsin Dells, with its beer garden open to a plaza with a glockenspiel that tells the story of the Pied Piper on the hour. We found about a dozen German beers on draught (a good list with few suprises) and even Okocim Pilsner from Poland. The menu mentions a large selection of unnamed bottled imports and micros but I did not investigate further. I was satisfied with my draughts of Franziskaner Dunkel Weiss and Kostritzer Schwarzbier. The menu offers a nice selection of German dishes, plus pizza, burgers and such. Our entrees were good but not outstanding. There is also live music in the evenings. The Essen Haus offers an alternative to many of the other bars and restaurants in Wisconsin Dells where Leinenkugel’s beers may otherwise be the best draught choices available.
