Great Great N/A Great Great
After a hearty lunch (and a few brews) at Widmers Gasthaus, I took a pleasant 20 minute walk and found my way to the evolving "Historical Mississippi District," home to a burdgeoning array of establishments, one of which is Amnesia Brewing.

And it is as unpretentious as they come: a converted warehouse with a covered beer garden where patrons quaff craft ales while watching the "Historical Mississippi District" pass by. Inside, you find a large area with a few picnic tables and a small bar off to the left.

In the back is the brewery, a 7 barrel direct-infusion system (I hope this is correct.) The beer list* is pretty expressive - I enjoyed the Dusty Trail Pale Ale (5.2 abv) and a delicious Desolation IPA (6.2 abv). For $7.00 you can get your beer to go (in a quart mason jar).

* Their Copacetic IPA was featured (and drank) at the OBF

Include efficient service along with some great music in a relaxing atmosphere and you have what Portland is known for: a friendly local pub.

If you are taking Trimet, the No. 4 bus from downtown goes right by. It's also a short (10 minute) walk to the Lompoc 5th Quadrant (Review Coming). A wonderful afternoon at Amnesia - one that I'll never forget.

The IPA is the best. Ordering only at the bar is weird. I am looking forward to sitting outside during the warmer weather.

I've been to Amnesia a few times. Weekdays are ok at Amnesia, but on my last visit a on Saturday afternoon, my entire experience was lousy. Yeah, the beer's good, and yeah, these a good selection of beer, but what good is that when the service is so lousy?

After waiting in line 5 minutes (there is service only at the bar and when I went, there were only two servers), a male bartender took my order. But then someone came up to close out, and instead of getting the drinks I ordered, he helped the other customer. Right after the bartender took my order, a second bartender asked if I needed help. I said no, but after it was obvious that the first bartender wasn't returning with drinks any time soon, I asked the second bartender if he could get my drinks after all. I got attitude back. "That's why I asked."

We ordered two sausages and watched as everyone who walked in after us got food. Order screwed up. Right down to the kraut on the dogs, which were poorly cooked.

Had to wait 10 minutes in line if I wanted another beer. What good is good beer if it takes so long to get it?

Bottom line: Food's lousy. Service is awful. Amnesia either needs to drop the food menu or hire more help. With dozens of full service breweries in Portland, I won't be going back to Amnesia.

Who knows if the beer or food or atmosphere of this place are any good?

Not me, because they don't let in kids. My wife and I were turned away on her birthday after making a special trek to try this place out because we had our 12-week old infant with us, sound asleep in a Baby Bjorn.

So I guess we'll keep taking our beer money to the other brewpubs in Portland that let in kids. Wait -- isn't that all of the rest of them?

At any rate we certainly won't bother with this family-hostile place again.

My husband and I love this place. Casual, good food and awesome beer! We love the fact that they offer peanuts, goldfish or pretzels for a minimal fee as most places do not do this any more. I fancy the Copasetic IPA but all the beers I have tasted there are good.

I love this place. The beers are borderline awesome, the outdoor area a nice place to soak up the sun and a few brews, and dog friendly. (After New Old Lompoc, the next nicest outdoor BP in town, I think). On my last visit I had my elderly mom, and a very-frightened Lab with me, and the bartender and grill tenders went out of their way to make everyhbody feel welcome--and I'm a fat old surburban guy, not an urban hipster. This is an excellent place and deserves all the good that can come their way.

Went to 13 brewpubs/breweries in one week 4/29-5/6, so I cannot write too much for each one, but "Beervanna" is the appropriate name for Portland. Every BP, beerbar we went to was top notch and friendly with great to awesome beers and service with few exception- the ones filled with smoke. But overall, compared to east coast, Portland is THE place for real beer lovers to spend at least a week. And we only did 2 McMenamins. Fly to Portland, grab an offcial beer map, hop on public transit (every BP was on a bus/tram/train line or a short walk) and have a beer blast!

Just went Sunday afternoon. I only had time for one beer, a Sunshine IPA. Not a typical IPA, but quite good sitting in the sun on the patio out front, which is a nice place to enjoy a beer. If you're from out of town, get some good directions. I probably liked it more than my "good" indicates, and will be back to check it out further.

First trip to Amnesia - aptly named b/c I had almost forgotten how it was 20 years ago when the first brewpubs sprung up. Great place. They only had 4 beers on, 2 IPAs, a porter, and a pale. The porter was pretty good, but it was hot so I chose to try the IPAs. One of them was a "sunshine" IPA - really closer to a pale, but who cares. Great nose, lighter flavored but plenty of hops - very well balanced (am I the only person in the NW that is tired of everyone creating hoppier & hoppier beers that are so incredibily unbalanced???). The other IPA ("Demolition?") was even better - really full bodied, assertive and balanced. Great place, will definitely be back the next time I am in town!

A little funky but sincere. The Christmas beer a little rough to start but mellowed into richness. IPA is fragrant, well-balanced, taste without over-powering.

These guys are doing a good job with their beers. It's good to see another new brewery enter the Portland scene, that's what keeps it vital. Definately worth seeking out and supporting on a regular basis !!!
