Thanks for making me aware of the Beer Judge Certification Program ( http://www.bjcp.org ). I perused their program to certify beer judges, which is indeed impressive. As a casual beer reviewer, I will likely continue with some form of subjective ranking which may be of interest to PubCrawlers.

Rand,
I've seen you post many times on some Iowa and Nebraska brewpubs. Each time you post "scores" for the beers. Just curious, are these solely your opinion, or are they based off of an objective grading system, like the BJCP ratings? If they are, would you mind breaking down the ratings based off of aroma, color, flavor, mouthfeel, etc.
Of course, if they're just your opinion that's cool too. It just lets me know I'm looking at an individual opinion not an objective rating.
Thanks for posting so much though!
Tim

stout ale 3/10; Oktoberfest "Der Festen" (seasonal) 3/10; wheat ale "Dinkey" 2/10; Scottish ale 2/10. Rating is where 10 is best. Eight beers brewed in-house, and on-tap.

Dinner isn't until 5pm. We didn't know that but the hostess was nice enough to give my boy a free soda at 4pm. Our waitress was interested in our thoughts on the beer. The food was really good. Beer was good. The wife and I tried one of each including a seasonal pumpkin ale. The wheat ale stood out as having a strong citrus flavor, it was the best of the bunch. The pale, scottish, amber and stout were middle of the road.
If I am ever back in Ames I would go back.

I just went to Olde main this past week (aug. 11th) and I thought the beer was pretty ok, but the resturant and food was beyond horrible. The server was rude, the food was wayyy overly salty, the host staff didn't have a clue, and when I mentioned all this to what I thought to be the manager on duty, he was clueless. I will prob. come back and have another Scottish ale (good!) but the resturant seems to be in serious need of some help. I doubt I will be back.
Hope this is helpful!

Not too bad, but nothing to write home about. Stout is OK, others brews are thin with little flavor. Perfect for the Bud Light crowd -- they can believe they're drinking something high-class and exotic but won't encounter the unfamiliar flavors of hops and malt. Food has gone downhill since they changed chefs a few months ago. My wife ordered a "seafood salad" which was delivered with just greens and no seafood or anything else. Sent it back, and they tossed a few shrimp on it. We've been a few times but don't think we'll return.

Has only been open for 5 months, so they are still feeling their way a bit. The stout is very good. As well the scottish and mild brown are above average. The marzen could be really good if they could get some carbination in it. the other beers were a miss as far as styles, particulary the "pale ale", no hops at all and also colored like a lager, not good at all! The food was very good and the wait staff is friendly and willing to meet your needs.

This place has been improving since they opened. The beer was great when they opened, but soon started tasting off- it was as if the yeast was under-pitched, or there was a bacterial infection, and you could taste some of the unfermented wert flavor in the background, especially in their lighter beers. It turns out they were so busy for the opening months that they were either going to be out of beer all the time or they'd have to short-ferment everything to keep up. Maybe unfortunately, they chose the latter. I'm sure they would have had complaints either way- what's the worse sin at a brewery, being out of beer or serving product that's not great? Not a decision I'd want to have to make. At any rate, in the past month the beer has been tasting great, they've had some very good seasonals, and they're talking about expansion of their serving capacity. They just put on a seasonal Marzen lager that's tasty and makes me want spring to get here. If you stopped by during the first 2 months and were turned off by the beer, stop by and give them another chance. They're doing much better.

This is a new place, so I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but the beer was awful. I tried the American Pale Ale and the Amber, and was hard pressed to detect malt or hops in either of them. In fact, both tasted a bit like sanitizing agent. This seems to be yet another of those "good food/lousy beer" brewpubs.

A brand new brewpub opening 10/04/2004. Owners are allowing Jeff Irvin, a UC-Davis educated brewer, to be a brewemaster and not necessarily conform to a margin approach of brewing. There will be 5 regular selection, a seasonal, and a brewers special on tap most of the time. JJ, the head chef, has put together a great menu including Certified Angus Beef, lamb, pork, upscale pub fare and wonderful desserts. Atmosphere is great this a old world urban outdoor theme. Quite a nice establishment and a definite must visit for Big 12 athletic fans when in town for a visit. Heck, this place is nice enough just to plan a visit and enjoy a good beer and great food. Check out the local review. http://www.amestrib.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=12963665&BRD=2035&PAG=461&dept_id=238101&rfi=8
