The beer: great. Staff: great. Atmosphere: great. Food: Not so great. Pizza is your best bet, but not if you're short on time - can sometimes be an hour. Burgers are hockey puck-like & served ONLY ON CHIBATTA BREAD (since when does a burger need fancy bread? Can we bring back the sesame seed buns, please?). Go for the beer, have other plans for food.

First, a warning--there is very little parking near the pub. On a thursday night I had to cruise around for 15 minutes before I found a place to park (and even then I wasn't sure if I was legally parked--but I didn't get a ticket!)
The beer selection was limited, but the beers they did have on tap were pretty good. My favorite was the Pale Ale which had a noce hoppy aroma. But if you are a hop-head you may be disappointed--at ~45 IBU's it was the hoppiest beer they served. The Irish Red was very drinkable, but not really noteworth. I sampled a stout, which had a strong coffee flavor and was pretty good.
I notice a couple of reviews commented on the food. They do have a new menu. I had a burger and it was very good, but on the other hand, the fries that came with it were ice cold.
The service was pretty bad. I went to the bar and was basically ignored until I raised my voice. When I moved to a table in the main room, I was basically ignored despite a bevy of waitresses going by my table.
The pub is in a nicely restored building and is very comfortable. All in all, I had a nice experience and would go back again.

Had a nice lunch but the food was not outstanding. Very nice lunch menu though and I'm sure there were plenty of good things to eat there. This bar seems to be a college bar. The beer selection was limited but I tried the Pale Ale and the Octoberfest. Both were very good.

Truly a place worth going to. It totally surpasses the previous establishmnet in this place. The beer is very good, really liked the winter warmer, but all are very drinkable. the food selection is great. I will go back!

Now that Old Cap has been open a while, I feel confident in revising my original review upward.
Despite what some buffoons might write, good beer is available in Iowa. Yes, I know writers like "Jim" think we're all a bunch of stupid hicks, but he is badly mistaken, and there are plenty of us in the state who appreciate a good pint.
Strangely, Iowa City was cursed for the longest time with Old Capitol's unspeakably awful predecessor. That has changed for the better.
Old Capitol now offers a fine lineup of their own beers, along with several outstanding guest taps, including some hard-to-find Belgian brews. Be sure to stop by on Thursdays, if you can, as that is "Firkin Day," when a new cask-conditioned ale is unveiled at 5:30pm.
The food also is good (especially if you can make it to one of their special Cajun dinners), although the service can be somewhat spotty (sadly, that's a common problem with Iowa City establishments).
Grab yourself a pint and converse with some of the regulars, one of whom is quite possibly me.

I would definitely go back to drink beer, but would not order food ever again. The sandwiches were barely luke warm (supposed to be hot!) and the fries were overseasoned and cold. We had to ask for drink refills several times and never did get the dessert menu we requested three times.

Old Capitol Brew is in the wrong part of the country for the quality of beer and food they serve. Not that I'm trying to knock Iowa, I grew up here, but Midwestern culture is not known for it's high quality micro-brews. There are very few micro-brews available, and the list gets even shorter if you're looking for top-notch beer. Having spent two years in Boston, home to brewer/patriot Samual Adams and more micro-brews locally than can be counted on one persons hands and feet along. To get to the point, I became spoiled with great beer very quickly and when I moved back to Iowa, I despaired for a quality beer made locally that I could get from the tap. Old capitol hit the nail right on the head. Their selection is very good with 6 great beers that are always available and 2-3 seasonal brews. I have yet to have a beer there that I didn't like, and I'd have to disagree with one of the other reviews and say that the Nut Brown is one of my favorites. It has a unique flavor that gets an added dimension in the after-taste. The food is also some of the best that can be found in the area, including their burgers which I have found to always be cooked to my specifications (Med. Rare). Really, if you're looking for a great beer and some good food, this is the place.

Now having been open for some time, the OC Brew Works has had time to get set up with quite a few house brews. At this time they have 6 on tap and one seasonal; Red Ale, Stout, Belgian Wit, Brown Ale, Light Lager, and a Pale ale. The seasonal right now is a pumpkin ale, presumably left over from Thanksgiving. I've had a chance to sample all except for the Pumpkin Ale, and I must say, I'm very happy with what I've seen so far. The stout is by far my favorite, and the Pale Ale definitely is high on the drinkability scale. They are tapping an IPA on Thursday, Jan 20, and a bock on Tuesday, Jan 25th. I talked to the brewmaster and apparantly they are looking to get about 10 beers on tap fairly consistently with seasonals mixed in. On Wed's they have pitcher night, where you can get a pitcher of any house brew for $3.50. I repeat, $3.50!! That alone makes it worthwhile.

Old Capitol opened on October 31, 2004, taking over the brewpub formerly called Fitzpatrick's. Fitzpatrick's brewed some of the worst beers around, so I figured anything the new owners did would be an improvement. After almost a month, I feel confident that the new guys are on the right track. For now, I'll give them a "good" overall rating (I haven't tried the food yet, and the service seems a bit spotty right now) but I have a feeling I may revise my rating upward in the future, as Old Capitol works out their start-up kinks.
Right now, they only have three of their own brews on tap--a light lager (for the novice drinkers) a pale ale (not as hoppy as I'd like, but it scores highly on the "drinkability" scale and is a perfect beer for knocking back a few pints while hanging out with friends) and a nut brown ale (a bit thin and disappointing). Word is a stout will be coming on line in a couple weeks.
For now, Old Capitol makes up for the lack of their own beers by offering an impressive selection of guest taps. Well known micros (Sierra Nevada, Goose Island), regional favorites (Millstream, Capital) and imports you don't see mormally see on tap (Hobgoblin old ale, Entire Butt, Saint Bernardus, La Binchoise).
I wish Old Capitol well. If the beer keeps showing improvement, I may find my keister parked on a barstool here on a regular basis.

Only two microbrews were available - light and dark! Food was awful, burgers were extremely overcooked and were served on a dry bun with no extras (ie: bacon, BBQ sauce, cheese, even though listed in menu). We waited longer than an hour after ordering, for our food and if we weren't so hungrgy and had the ability to wait another hour, we would have sent our food back.
