After an hours drive from Spokane & then another 25-miles across open wheat-fields and little else on a hot August day, you can imagine our relief when we finally entered little Odessa, Washington. A farm community with a heavy German ancestry, we were there to visit the Rocky Coulee Brewing company open Fridays only between 2-10PM It was at best, an inconvenience in an otherwise well-planned Eastern Washington beer run. We had planned to reach Dayton, Waitsburg and Kennewick that same day before stopping for the night and this little, out-of-the-way town was putting a serious crimp in our day. Also, it was a bit hard to find -- set on the other side of railroad tracks in a very small warehouse & hidden by a huge grain processing plant. Houses, mobile homes and that plant provided the only view. But the beer! Oh, the beer!!! Waitsburg and the rest almost didn't get their turn that day. Tom Schaefer does not brew a beer "he wouldn't drink himself" but does cater to his local clientele and that means (get ready hopheads!) no IPA's. Germans, you see, like their Pilsners and Ales and that's what you get here. A Golden Wuss (Tom's only concession to the Bud drinkers demand and he's not happy about it!);a Fireweed Honey Blond; Creamed Copper Ale; REd Eye Ale; Brown Ale and Dunkel are your choices and any of them will satisfy any taste-buds in any season. He also makes a "beerita" for the ladies because "they don't drink beer but their husbands do and this is the only place in town." The local tavern closed their doors a while back and Tom listens to his customers. The pub offers free pretzels, a small (200 sq. ft.)place to sit w/4 tables and an outdoor seating area. Tom is a farmer first but the Dr. says he has to "get off the damn tractor" and he wants to brew full-time so perhaps we can look forward to a time when Rocky Coulee will be open 5 days a week early afternoon to late evening. In the meantime, a day trip from Spokane or up from Moses Lake and surrounding environs will put you in Odessa where you can talk w/Tom or Lynnette, enjoy his wonderful beer (he brewed for a time at Spokane's Northern Lights Brewery) and become, for a brief time, a part of a different community. Have a Dunkel for me...or three!
