New ownership. Still great brews, but without all the monks running around telling everyone to quiet down. Also they stopped playing all the monk music too. Basically the same great place ... and nobody there is taking themselves too seriously. Marked improvement! A must after first stopping down the street @ Mc Sorley's.

Under new ownership, Burp Castle has improved in recent months. Twelve beers are on tap (plenty of Belgian) and the bottle list is currently about twenty-five quality bottles brands.

It's a Belgian beer bar without any Belgian beer! Half the draft lines were empty and none of the beers were Belgian

Lisa, why do you bring up your husband and his ancestry when you post about a bar that you never even went into? The selection of beers here (and at suster bar, Brewsky's) has been going downhill in recent months. All the good stuff is gone! No Chimay! No lambics! No fruit beers! The bottle list hasn't been updated in months and all that's left on it is the stuff that no one wants to drink. These bars used to be pretty good, but no more.
Oh, one last thing for the owner: It's July! Fix your air conditioner!

My husband Frank Jordaens, a direct descendant from Jacob Jordaens, flemish artist, has not had the privelege of tasting at your bar, but we are so looking forward to it. An average beer drinker can not appreciate the taste of a real beer, belgian ale. I join you in a toast with my husband, belgian Frank Jordaens, to your unique opportuinty to educate the public in the art of tasting beer, how beer was meant to be tasted, in in truest form, belgian style ale. Thank you

A lot of Belgian beers both on draft and in bottles in a great Belgian-themed bar. A great place to go for a quiet beer (emphasisi on the word 'quiet).

I was disappointed. I tried two draft beers and they were both flat. They didn't try real hard at keeping the monastery theme either.

This place is too much! Yes it is expensive but worth a visit. The idea of being within a monastery and drinking beers with monks is too cool. Take a hundred bucks and have a few pints with the brothers.

Tony -- caps lock. If you don't know anything about beer, you should probably stay away from good beer bars. I am glad, however, that you know how kangaroo urine tastes.

THIS PLACE WAS AN OVERPRICED GIMMICK AND JOKE FEST. THE BEERS WERE DISGUSTING.I SAMPLED AT LEAST 6 DIFFERENT BEERS AND I WOULDNT EVEN USE ONE OF THEM IN MY CAR RADIATOR IF MY ENGINE WAS OVERHEATING.THE MUSIC AND THE MURALS WERE DEPRESSING AND THE FREAKS IN THE BAR FIT IN WELL.ASIDE FROM THE FACT THAT 3 KANGAROO URINE TASTING BEERS COST ME $19.00 IS A SHAME THAT EVEN THE LORD COULD FORGIVE.

Burp Castle is, without question, the best source of common and rare brews I have ever seen. Only serious drinkers need enter, as there's no food and the atmosphere is sedate, with quiet classical music in the background. The bartenders (dressed as monks, no less!) are cordial and very helpful with recommendations when you don't know what to try. This will happen to you, as there are up to 700 different brews on hand at any given time.
They've been known to have problems getting certain stock during the summer though, but there are always more than enough selections to keep even an adventurous taster busy. Just the dozen or so beers they have on tap should be enough to satisfy your curiosity.

My boyfriend and I visited here in January 2001. There were 2 guys "working" behind the bar. Actually they were speaking to the one other customer in the place. Someone had some serious body odor...so bad that the whole room smelled! and no, it wasn't us :P We sat at the bar for 15 minutes and no one asked us if we wanted anything. We walked out. Yes the beer is expensive, but its just the kind of beer it is, its expensive anywhere. I had no complaints about the prices. I really wanted to try the apricot. Our experience was less than satisfactory. Probably won't ever bother giving it another shot. P.S. I'm a NJ transplant in Iowa, so its not like I'm Miss Midwest being offended by "rude" NYC service.

Great beer, nice mood, wall paintings by a Ukrainian artist are nice as well. But the prices are just to stiff to sit down for any length of time. 15 feet from Brewsky's.

Excellent selection of belgians and served by a knowledgeable staff (monk.) Only complaint is the prices are just ridiculous... $10 a pint is just stupid. 2 of us had 4 pints each and rang-up $80 !!!!!! Highest prices I have ever seen in the U.S. or outside too

If you hate the sports bar atmo of many beer bars, this place is a haven. However, you'll pay for the privilege of keeping the yahoos away. Beers are severely overpriced, so go for the top of the line instead of ordering a Polish beer that's $1.50 at the deli and $5 here.

A must visit for anyone in the area. My favorite was a Weihenstephaner Hefe Weiss. Try not to talk or laugh to loud or the monks will SHOOOOSH you! And you know who you are LL.

Outrageous Belgian Beer at outrageous prices. $10 for a pint of Belgian Lambic is a bit much! Despite this, any beer fan should not miss this spot.

Closed by the city Jan. 11 for a license violation of some sort -- likely that they were operating without one, but I'm not certain.
Hopefully they can re-open very soon (they were still closed as of 1/19).

Still enjoy coming here because it has the largest array of Belgians on tap in the city. But for a more extensive Belgian bottled selection (with 6 taps), try Belgo, during the week, on Lafayette south of Astor Place -- about three blocks or so from Burp Castle. Eat and drink at Belgo's and wind up your evening with a glass or two of your favorite lambic at Burp castle. They mesh nicely that way.

We took our business colleagues from Australia to show them what a real beer bar looks like. We were not disappointed! We tried many Belgian styles that we can't get in Atlanta and closed the place down. They even had Lindeman's Framboise on tap. This has always been our favorite NYC spot for beer.

Fabulous, famous for the serving attire. Wide selection of beers, most of which are different from Brewsky's on a given night. Almost distracting, the way the Monks won't actually talk unless it's absolutely necessary (and even then...). Must see to believe.

A nice place to unwind, listen to classical music and sip a belgian. Patrick, the serving "Monk" knows all there is to know about beer. If you want something sweet, strong, light, dark, etc. his suggestions will steer you in the right direction.

Burp Castle is a fabulous bar with tons of atmosphere. The outside looks like an actual castle! Your waiter is a "Monk" who brings you a very extensive beer menu, featuring Belgian Ales. There is a current listing of the 12 or so beers on tap, including Belgians. Very cool place.
