Went there on a weekday while in NYC for our Honeymoon.
The beer selection was really nice, and I was shocked at the cheap happy hour prices and presence of beers from the NYC area that I hadn't heard of.
Definitly worth hitting the happy hour. The history part doesn't hurt either (though the cost to look at a few old rooms didn't interest us and we passed this up for the bar).

If you go for the history--you won't be disapointed. If you go for lunch or dinner--be sure to dress appropriately. They were very relieved that I just wanted to go to the bar--I was dressed in shorts and a golf shirt. As I turned to the bar I glanced in the dinning room and saw all the suits and snootiness and couldn't help but wonder what old George (Washington, not Bush) would think. The bartender was friendly but far more interested in talking to her boyfriend than really working the bar (earning a tip). I didn't eat but had a few brews from their varied but 'safe' list of beers (I couldn't imagine anyone in the next room ordering an arogant bastard ale). On tap were the likes of Majic hat #9, Mich light, New Castle, Stella, Bass Blue Point summer ale, Sam Adams etc. The bottled beer was similar--Becks, Amstel, Carona. The bar menu looked appropriately priced for Manhattan. It was fun to stop in for a beer and then go on. That's all I can recommend.

Nice little tavern with a large history. The number of taps is good but not great. The 2 beers I sampled were both top notch quality. Burger & fries were tasty. I went on Saturday afternoon and the place was steady but not busy. Like the other reviewers have mentioned, it must be a weeknight place.

In response to the post below: If the establishment carries the word 'Tavern" as part of their name, it is obviously about the food and beer. The food sucked, the service sucked and the beer was ok.

This place is not about the food or the beer necessarily. It's about history. To hang out in the same place that a few founding fathers hung out is pretty cool. If you're not a history buff then go somewhere else.

Many plusses in addition to a nice beer selection: easy to reach, on several subway lines; very attractive old building and bar; excellent free popcorn, crackers and cheese, pretzels, etc. But, bartenders frequently inattentive and you need to go before the after-work hordes arrive. Some weekend closures - check first if planning to go on Saturday or Sunday.

Frauces is a Historic Inn dating from the Revolutionary War. Washington gave his farewell address to his troops on the front steps. They have a small museum upstairs. The food is good and the bar is a Wall Street after work hang out. Tuesday nights they have $1 beer specials of slightly obscure Mega brews. Last night was Shaefer.
