Discrimination....dare I say...I was in town on business as I often am, and I always frequent Helmer's. I never go on a Friday but this time I did and found the place packed. The only table was in the corner, I asked the owner Joan for that table and she said it was reserved, I said I would wait, 10 minutes later a couple walked in and right in front of me Joan asked them "a table for 2" and she seated them right at the corner table. I guess if you are single you are not spending enough for her...I will never go back, so now she lost a regular customer and hopefully more...Jim

I am revising my last review with a more positive opinion.I went back two more times and was pleased with just about everything. The nasty server was seemingly gone and this time,my patronage was appreciated. As always a great ,Euro/American micro offering with many choices on tap.Food was delicious, portions heaping! The atmosphere is still subdued, with an older crowd, but all elements seem to work now.

Do not go to this place expecting to have a good time. With one of the best beer selections in Hoboken, above MileSquare in choice. With a restored, original grand wood bar,you would be highly impressed like i was.The menu is a good selection of true German dishes.Ive been here about 6 times or so with many different friends with the same result,The staff is very unfriendly.Last time i ate there ,I recieved the worst service in my 40 years! This place needs a change of thier old, crusty staff and somewhat of a makeover. You better bring the party with you ,cause you wont find it at Helmers.

Helmer's has been one of my favorites for years... from the first time I had lunch there.. (the open faced sliced steak).. Get there early so you don't miss out on the homemade dumplings or desserts..

Unassuming neighborhood restaurant. I'm not sure of its history but I wouldn't be surprised if it's been there for generations. The VFW-style decor belies Helmer's real substance - good food, no-nonsense service and a spectacular array of bottled beers along with an impressive draft selection including many quality locals (e.g. Climax, Ramstein, etc.). While the focus is German, the beer selection is anything but limited. Along with refreshing and hard-to-find Berliner Kindl Weisse to start, we were also able to find some real Belgin gems from Cantillon and Hanssens. Check out their website for the selection and, by all means, drop by for a long, leasurely lunch.

The beer selection is one of the best in the tri-state area, especially for deutsch biers. It is Richard the bartender who turned me on to d.b.a., where he said i could find my beloved cask conditioned ales served on a handpump. I will forever be in his debt. Thanks! Beers are always fresh and delicious.

Helmers is one of my favorite haunts in Hoboken. It offers an outstanding selection of German beer in bottle and draught.
The menu consists of old-world German country food. It would be quite difficult to find similar dishes in Germany today. Everything is prepared to order and always delicious.
A must for fans of quality German beer and food.

One of Hoboken's best. REAL German food and the best selection of German beers around. Excellent for small groups - or larger ones if you book.

The selection of German beers is wonderful, varying the selection seasonally. The food is great, love the smoked platter.

A true gentleman's preserve. Great beer selection on tap and in the bottle. Some of the hardest to find Germans beers around (bottle). The food is great german food. The decor is turn of the century. The back room is great for large parties; makes you feel like men to drink and eat back there. Only shortcoming is the prices are slightly high, but still not bad.
