Back in late '99 and early 2000 I worked in Austin during the week. A bunch of us coworkers quickly became Wednesday regulars here. We got off at 4:30 and went straight to the Draught Horse and patiently waited for it to open. Dubbelbock was always good, Steam Engine Porter was great, and the time we got one too many pitchers of Saint Arnold Christmas Ale was a classic. hee hee The redhead serving the brews never smiled and it was a sport to see if we could get her to smile. One guy got the corners of her mouth to turn up for a second, we all clapped and cheered. We liked the homemade pizza alright, we'd always tip the pizza maker for every slice even though the sausage gave us real bad gas. ha ha The atmosphere was old English, serene and secure, we liked watching the light streaming in the windows move as the evening progressed. Darts in the corner, lively conversations inside and out. Great pub.

I've been to the Draught House twice in six years of living in Austin. I just don't get the popularity of this place. Fortunately the few times I've been here there were no lines at the bar, if there were there's no chance I would have stayed. There's too many places with good beer, good beer selection, good food and much friendlier staff to justify standing around this place. If sitting in an asphalt parking lot on lawn furniture is your idea of a good time, this place is for you.

I have visited The Daught House a few times and get the same everytime. As stated in a previous review, the "Beer Nazi" is very rude and does not make you feel your business is appreciated. The beer selection is great and the bar set up is great. Lines can get really long to get a beer as the make you stand in one line. It can make it out the front door at times. Be careful as to how you act because the "Beer Nazi" will accuse you of being too "tipsy" and will not serve you. Personally, I will not continue going to this bar. As a consumer, it is nice to feel my money is just as important as everyone elses.

I visited this brewpub on 9/1/07 and had the following brews Schwarz Weizen, Gose Wheat, Hop Gold, Wilson's ESB and Red Planet. I was disappointed to find that they no longer serve sampler flights. I had to purchase a half pint of each brew in order to sample all the brews. The plus side to this visit was a special on Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale. Buy the brew and keep the glass.

If you can avoid the beer Nazi or drink there so much that she starts to like you, this place is great! I even like the beer Nazi because she adds to the atmosphere of the joint. The beer flows and they have some awesome specials. Free pizza? All you can eat brats? Are you kidding me? This is my idea of heaven!
But for godsake, know what you want BEFORE you get to the counter and have your ID ready, for the Beer Nazi waits for no one. (NO BEER FOR YOU! WAIT WHOLE YEAR!)

This is the best drinking place I have found in the U.S. so far and I just counted my life list and its up to 72 micros. Only problem is choosing what you want from about 70 taps, but who is complaining! There were about 5 of their own beers that were quite good but its hard to stand out when you have 65 others around you. Food was not special unless your there on Sat. night for the free bratts, they were outstanding. The staff and patrons are very friendly and when they are busy I have never seen so much beer poured. They sell so much Guiness they have 2 taps, Austin must also be the Irish capital of Texas

This is a great low key place to hang out. Especially on a week night, they have alot of week night specials.
We love this place and go there almost weekly.

Stopped in on a recent weekday night. As usual very busy. I sat at the small bar-sort of strange as all the taps are right in front of you rather than at the back of the bar. Service was prompt-they were busy but the bartenders did chat for a minute when they had a bit of time. I had the house Saison-a little darker than most saisons I've had but very drinkable. I had the Live Oak Treehugger-a very nice barleywine I wish came in bottles for the cellar. A nice stopover a couple of times a year when I visit Austin.

It's a very homey place, full of the charm you would expect from a pub surrounded by a mix of neighborhood and niche office spaces.
The home brews are arguably the best in town. The selection, very excellent. You sometimes have to wait in line for a while to grab a brew, but the atmosphere seems to make the wait time fly. Random merit: parking lot hang out. Ya' just gotta stop by to see how cool it is.
The one failing, a rather snobby and generally irritated staff. They know their stuff, and they'll share their knowledge, but it's obvious they'd rather you just bugger off for now. ;)

My wife and I stopped in here at the mid-point of a recent walk around Austin. We sampled a couple of house beers and found them to be excellent. This was a nice little neighborhood pub and fit well with Ray Oldenburg's definition of a great "third place". It also compared favorably with our benchmark microbrewery of The Lucky Labrador up in Portland, Oregon.

I visited this brewpub on 12/17/2005 and had the following brews Hops Gold, Amber Waves, Smoked Porter, and Marley's Gnarley Barley Wine. The barley wine is served in 10 oz glasses and is limited to two per person. The house brews were all within acceptable parameters for their style. The brewpub also has numerous taps of commercially available brews. Well worth the stop when in Austin.

By myself in the pub for quite a while until the after work crowd started trickling in. Server was knowledgeable but very cynical. 70 beers on tap with a great diversity of beers from all over the world and the US and Texas plus their own great beers brewed in the small brewery hidden in the corner. They had four house beers on when I was there: vanilla porter would have been a great porter if the vanilla had been left out, ESB, licorice dubbel was pretty well done and the pale which was my favorite. Take the time to look around as there is a great breweriana collection. No kitchen!!!

Great place for Gathering with the hommies and i like the fact that you can drink in the parking lot. Ya gotta try the Grand Cru!! Or if you like it dark, the Belgium black. Both of these beers are HHHHIIIIGGGGHHHHH in alcohol content so they limit you to two. On Thursdays they are only 2.25 which is an excellent price for the delicious sweet buzz. Me likes alot. Beer Selection? What beer Selection I think they have like only 72 beers on tap, so if you cant find something that tickles your fancy somethings wrong with you. I havent yet had the Pleasure of trying there food. But my boyfriend says there wed free pizza is great. I dont know It might just be because its free. HA. And I cant complain about the service, Ive heard that it sucks. Ive only had one woman pour my brew's and shes the sweetest thing so I think that overrides every one else.

Definately a neighborhood bar. Come early or bring your lawn chair as it can get very crowded. They have a decent selection of cider on tap for Austin.

How many hundreds of taps? I forgot, since about tap no. 20, I passed out. I seem to remember the food was great (what else would you expect from an Austin Brewpub?) Great local atmosphere; really refreshing from a displaced Austinite coming from NYC. BTW, I tried 20 or so different brews the last time I visited.

I've only been coming to the Draught House the last year or so - though I had come here when it was in one of its earlier incarnations 15 or so years ago. I really like this bar now. It has really improved over its earlier forms (from the pre-brewpub era). I was a Posse East regular for 20+ years, but as I've grown older I was looking for a good neighborhood bar with good beer, reasonable prices, and an average age of clientelle greater than 20-something. This bar is it! Great beer (and I love most of their local brews! - Posse never had that), great selection, and nice mix of clientelle. I find it to be totally unpretentious, and most of the bartenders with whom I've dealt here are superior and friendly, without being pushy. I only wish they had a true beer garden, but the neighbors complained when they tried.

I decided to go here based on the selection. I'd seen reviews that indicated that they had a great selection of beers from all over but that their house brews were only OK. The first beer I had was a Pilsner Uquell on draft. It was the first time I've seen Pilsner Urquell on draft so I had to try it. It was it's typical self but I didn't notice the usual peppery saaz so much. I then tried the house Double IPA. Wow, that was great. I was told it was both double alcohol and double hops (they limit you to 2 pints on this one) and it came out more like a very intense IPA with the kind of hop/malt balance a Pale Ale might have. The aroma hops is what really got me. I couldn't quite place it but it might have been an offshoot of Cascade but not the original Cascade. It had the citrusy Cascade quality but a very distinct mintyness that I haven't experienced before. Worth a try for anyone. The next beer I tried was a Palauner Salvator. I was a little disapointed but this had nothing to do with the establishment as they had so many to chose from and I'd never seen this one anywhere... on tap or in the bottle. The food was a little disapointing. Mostly just your appetizer/gameday type food and not a good selection.

I've been going for 10 years. Wednesday's FREE pizza day is most absurd. Thin crust style with toppings to spare! Half of the staff are unfriendly and act too cool for school, but the other half make up for them and then some. GREAT LOCAL BAR!!!

Excellent home-brews. Cheap prices on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Haven't tried the food. When the weather is nice, you can hang out in the parking lot. Closest thing to a neighborhood bar in Austin.

This place is really pretentious, it could be one of those neighborhood dives with great beer if peanuts didnt cost $1.75 a handful and the Domestic Beer wasnt watered down. Not to mention the people are an older relive UT 1958 group.
