I haven't been to this place yet, but have heard good things. My brother is a home-brewer that went on to win a contest that allowed him to brew with a Portland brewery and have his beer on taps all over the Portland area. One thing he told me was a down-fall to many establishments is not paying to have their beer lines professionally cleaned. I have had stouts that tasted like Hefeweizens and Barley-Wines that tasted like yeast. When investigating I have found that these places DON'T clean their lines. A simple, but not cheap step. However, it is necessary to keep all of your clientelle. I think anyone who has a connection with this lovejoys joint should belly-up and tell the owners. They WANT to know. Trust me, I'm a Chef and anyone in service wants even the worst news. It is far too often that an owner/operator is the last to know...

I used to frequent Lovejoy’s about once a month. About 2 years ago, I noticed that the beer did not taste as good. So I didn’t go for several months, but when I did the beer was still bad…..then another few months past, still bad. When the threat of closing past with new owners keeping Lovejoy’s open, I thought I would see if there was any improvement in the taste….no such luck. It was worse than ever. Also, there is a smoking ban in Austin bars and restaurants. It was obvious that they choose to cater to the smoker, since when I looked around before leaving, I would estimate that ¾ of the clientele were smoking without reprimand. Since I am a non-smoker, I have 2 reasons to never go there again.

Tonight I had the most terrible Love Joys experience ever. I've been to this bar more than a few times and never had problems but I guess they've hired a new bartender. I was with a group and a gentleman with tattoos on his face waited on me and was super funny and nice. Another gentleman with anger issues waited on a friend of mine. He actually pressed his hands roughly against my shoulder because my friend only tipped a dollar on a two drink tab. My friend ordered a drink the bartender gave him a double and was super pissed that he only tipped once in total. LETS BE HONEST!!! Anyone in the SERVICE industry will tell you that sometimes you have customers that suck even if you have these customers you do not go to their table and cause a scene because you feel that you were not tipped enough for doing someone a favor. Perhaps this gentleman has lived with his parents in Westlake too long. YOU ARE NOT OWED ANYTHING FOR GIVING SOMEONE MORE THAN WHAT THEY ASK FOR!!! I only hoped for a positive experience tonight but that didn't happen. I'm sorry I even thought to take my friends there.

I love this place!! If you like to stare at copper kettles and sniff your glass before every sip, this place is not for you. There is no rule saying that they have to make beer that homebrew contest judges will like. Opinions here are not supressed and are encouraged greatly, but it is just that, your opinion. For every homebrewer that comes here and hates the beer, there are 5 non brewers that come here and love it. A homebrew contest judge may be great at judging styles of beer and color of beer and aroma and gravity and bitterness but is he the best judge of what people actually like to drink? Maybe not. This place rocks!!! It is still a dive and it still has atmosphere. It's ok if you don't have piercings or tattoos, don't be scared, but if you want to drink nationally acclaimed, award winning, style conscious, popular beer, maybe you should try Bud Lite!!!

I have been coming to Lovejoy's for over 10 years and remember when it was really a dive and had a lot of atmosphere. I think I was one of the only non-pierced or otherwise alternative people there. It was great and I loved it. I also remember the beer was awesome, even thgouh they went through several brewers. The last great brewer at the place was Sam Healy, a biology grad that I heard moved back home to NY. While the place has cleaned up some it is still a great bar to hang out in and they do carry some good bottles and commecial drafts, but the quality of the house beers is severely lacking and has been for several years. As a homebrewer and BJCP judge I can tell you others with some background have the same conclusion. Something is wrong. Several beers each time I go appear contaminated and have a belgian-like bacteria induced taste which has to do with sterilization of equipment most likely. All of the beers seem much weaker than I remember 4+ years ago - which just means they are using less ingredients, maybe due to cost (they were recently sold to another owner). At any rate, as much as I love the place and keep going back ever two weeks or so hoping for a different result, the beer is still very sub-standard. A trip to the Draught House or North by Northwest would be more worthwhile for a beer lover. In sincerely hppe things change at Lovejoys, I honestly don't know many poeple that love good beer that head there now when in Austin.

Alright, here's why I like Lovejoy's: Good beer, good liquor, good people, plenty of snack foods (peanuts, trail mix--which you can't have at 90% of bars these days and I've flat out gotta have), and none of this teeny-bopper dancefloor crap. This is a BAR. Plus, I really appreciate the unique brews they put together out of Lovejoy's. If you like coffee, you have to do the Expresso Stout, and if you like blueberries, you have to get the Folsom City Blueberry brew. The bartenders are cool and the ID-guy at the door is even always a great guy. Bottom line, it's a good experience if you're there to drink and talk, rather than bump around with a bunch of children on some dancefloor.

Had the sampler. Nothing stood out. The barlywine was more of a pale ale and the cask conditioned was strange. Had better at other establishments. It is a place I could hang out.

My favorite Austin bar. Good mix of people, laid back atmosphere, good on-tap beer selection. However, until Austin becomes 100% it can get a little smoky after 10, not that I care. I think it adds to the atmosphere :)

heeyyyy, ray mcneill here...as some of you know, i own a pretty funky brewery myself, in fact, the funkiest i've been to prior to lovejoy's. The beers here were remarkably good considering they had nothing more than a glorified home brewing set up (though I've seen better equipped breweries in peoples homes, and i've known homebrewers that made better beer, but most of them were also professional brewers... digressing too much). That place is downright FUNKY. Cool scene, quasi goth pub brewery??? Difficult to pigeonhole this place, but I made friends instantly with whomever I spoke, including bartenders... Definitely check it out

I appreciate Lovejoys for all the things it isn't such as sterile, pretentious, trendy, and predictable. The house beer is very good along homebrew lines but not great in the larger craftbrew sense. There's nothing wrong with a little 5 barrel brewhouse but unless my eyes deceive me the draft system is fed by banks of Cornelius kegs. The strong beer styles that draw me in such as barleywines, Scottish styles or British style strong ales rarely meet the standard for the style. Good enough, but not on par with the style parameters and local competition. Lovejoys is a grunge bar with a decent hobbyist for a brewer, nothing wrong with that.

Lovejoy's is what funky weird Austin used to be. Leave your cell phone and penny loafers at home. This place is where real Austinites go for a good beer, good juke tunes, and interesting people. You might even see Leslie there.

Visited Sunday nite after Thanksgiving. Sat at the bar. Among their own brewed product, good IPA interpretation as it was some Red IPA--very good taste. The Stout was good although a tad less noteworthy than the IPA. Good joint. Smoky.

Character, Character, Character! Did I mention that this place has Character. They just need to remove a couple couches and add a stage. Great beer and great music are hard to find in this town.

If you do not like pierced people, tattoos and smoke, stay away. If you like fun, good pub-brewed beer and an outstanding commercial beer line, this is the place. Best beer was a cask conditioned pale with good malt and hop balance. Commercial beers included Arrogant Bastard, Delirium Tremens on tap.

Don't be intimidated by this dark, smokey place. Go on in, sit down on a couch, enjoy the murals on the wall, and have some very good beer.

I truly wish that there were more places like this. it really makes going out to have a pint or 2 a worthwile experience. Best beer, selection, ambience, jukebox & prices in town! Anxiously awaiting Lovejoys II (in Cherrywood perhaps?)

The murals on the wall are worth the visit! Yes it is a dive, but a dive with character. The Dennis Hopper IPA could be a little hoppier, the AJ Porter is smooth and a great session beer. The Sampsons Pale Ale Cask is served at the perfect temperature. They also serve some bottled and have about a dozen other taps along with a full bar. I visited during the SXSW concert season and had a great time.

I like Lovejoys. Chip brews some good beers. I like all of his dark beers, not to mention the Sampsons pale ale. There is also a rather good selection of "hard to find" imports. I haven't found another place in town that regularly stocks the imports that Lovejoys has.
