One of their ales (I don't remember the name but I don't think it was the Log Jam ale, it was another ale they brewed) might be the best beer I'd ever consumed. Used to buy out the coolers of Northern Michigan groceries' 22 oz bottles until they went out of business the first time. It was a downer for me since I considered their brew one of life's best pleasures. Then, I was soooo happy to find out it had reopened that I drove up north to the pub in 2004 just to get a taste of my favorite brew since they had not resumed bottling. Now, it's closed again and I am bummed. Just amazing beer. Period.

Sorry to see my closest brewery close down but that's business. I always liked the Oatmeal and Lake Trout Stout. Mike also had a St. Paula's Liquid Wisdom (sounds cool, huh). It was real good and real German. Never really made you smart though.

I'm not surprised this establishment went out of business again. It always seems to me that the owners only put forth half an effort to be the kind of place they could be. Hopefully it reopens and is managed by someone who puts a little more time and energy into their work. A good start might to have a new lineup of beers that are a little more lively than past efforts. Just my opinion...Hysteria

The Boyne River Brewery is closed again, I was the Brewmaster from 3/05 to 9/05. Hopefully, it will re-open in the spring with new ownership. Thank you for the nice comments about the beer, and it was fun to meet everyone who stopped in this summer!

Pale was ok, the Red was pretty good. Had the Nachos. They were very tastey. Rumor has it this place is for sale again. Too bad.

On a visit we stopped in for a sampler. The Pale ale was a medium body with a great after taste. The Brown ale had the hints of chocolate and coffee that I like. Their red was about on line with a Killians.
The Brewmaster was very kind and talked at length about his beers and gave the wife and I a great tour. Very friendly folks. Stop in and give it a try!

Their pale ale, IPA, and stout were okay, but nothing great. I also tried a red that was absolutely horrible. I was glad to see this place open again, but the brewer needs to improve the beers.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news every time I sign on but I drove by the brewery last week and there was a "for sale" sign in the window. Nor was anyone there. I did call the Boyne City Chamber of Commerce and they confimed that they were no longer in business. Want to buy a microbrewery?

There has been a lot of rumors that Boyne River has filed for Bankruptcy, gone out of business, stopped brewing beer. Nothing could be further from the truth. I stopped in to Boyne River Brewing on June 7, 2002 and talked with the owner. He said that they have stopped serving food but he was still brewing and bottling. Boyne River Brewing is still up and running and brewing excellent beer. I had a few of the pints of their pale ale at Latitudes in Bay Harbor the night before and it is an excellent pale ale.

I'll tout their Brown Ale anywhere - I consider it one of the best, period, and even in Michigan, a state with many good browns, it more than holds it's own. the other beers are usually good, too. The pub is charming and friendly and usually full of regulars ... i like the place a lot.

I was a little disappointed to find tha t this is a smoke free establishment. That means "NO smoking" I like a cigar with my beer. Something that some people may want to know, if they are traveling a long distance to visit. The beer was OK, but not fantastic. Had the Pale Ale and the Lake Trout Stout. The stout was very nice with a roasted flavor. The Pale Ale was nothing special. Nachos were hot and delicious.

Oatmeal Stout, Lake Trout Stout and Porter, all had the appropriate roasted malt flavor and were very clean tasting. The pale ale was highly hopped with cascade. The 10:30 ale was a very good light ale. The amber Laid Back Ale was too laid back and was rather bland. Overall a great brewpub that is worth a return visit.

A great northern Michigan beer experience. The beers are top knotch and the people are incredibly friendly. I visited with my family, including three small kids, and was offered an impromptu tour of the facilities. Their beers are definitely best experienced on the premises, however. The quality of their bottled beers can be hit and miss.

The beer quality is great/good depending on the style. A great pale ale, a very good stout, but others I tried were far less successful. The summer specialty "Nitwit" had too much banana flavor (I admit this is not one of favorite beer styles, though.) The amber ale was just bland, and the nut brown too sweet/yet bland (a common problem in my view--nobody except Samuel Smith's and Goose Island seems to get this one right.) The place has a great funky atmosphere and the food was excellent--many vegetarian options. Nice little outdoor patio. A fine brewpub overall. Review is based on visits to approx. 100 brewpubs in several states and countries.

I don't know anything about this place, other than I've had a few bottles of their Lake Trout Stout. It was pretty good, but not remarkable.

My parents moved to northern MI 3 years ago. Aside from the fact that I was seeing my family, Boyne River Brewing is one of the few saving graces of my journeys there. I'm not putting the area down, but being the city boy that I am... Anyway, I love this place!

An excellent brewpub. Relaxed and quiet enough to watch the Rose Bowl from across the filled room and still hear it. Playing one of their many board games was encouraged. The Porter that was available was their best yet. They need to sell that one in the stores.

Though I have not been there since October, I have found this one to be an outstanding, small brewery. The ales are hand crafted by the owner and you can often catch him at his craft. I plan to be there soon and will update you then.
