We've been here 3 times in the past 2 years. Each time, the food is OK, the beer selection limited to just 2 or 3 types and each one a bit off style and watery. I get the impression that they are brewing today only because that is what they have always done, it's more of an afterthought now. There's only enough seating around the bar for 8 to 10 people, if that. It's probably worth going to once if you're in the area and because another place, Motor City Brewing is across the street so you can catch 2 on one trip. The parking situation described by someone else is accurate, most of the spots are owned by TJam. There is a feud between the two places that somehow involves relatives or friends owning the 2 places leaving MC only a few parking spots, and they do enforce it.

On my last trip to Detroit, 11 years ago, I was disappointed to find the TJ&S closed for the day. I eagerly awaited the day that I would get to visit the pub, which finally happened May 2008. After a beer at the non-descript bar with the unfriendly staff, I realized that I should have just stayed at Motor City across the street. 3 beers? Are you kidding me? All you have is 3 beers? Maybe you should worry a little less about making ice cream, cookies (not worth $2), bread, and cheese…. Or don’t call yourself a brew pub.

As a frequent drinker at Motor City across the street, use to pop in often here for food.
Well, let me tell you....first, there is some kind of bizarre feud going on between this restaurant and Motor City regarding parking in the lot across the street. A security guard from TJ's will tell you if your not in the assigned (but not marked!) parking places for MC. Weird.
The couple that bought this restaurant from the two previous owners are over their heads. They can't handle this and the Bronx and it is reflected in the personalities of the employees and level of customer service. They don't have the personalities for this business.
That being said, there are always one or two interesting beers although information about them is often scarce, perhaps due to turnover or the feeling I get when I'm there that I should be grateful that they're there and serving me. Wow - I'll wait to hear of some changes before I ever return.

4 taps and I tried their stout and found it to be uninteresting, with little flavor to it. Didn't try the food but the menu looked good

Traffic Jam's beers/ales have greatly improved in the last year or so. The Pale Ale now is appropriately hopped and worth a trip. Earlier reviews that panned the brews were right, but this is no longer the case. And still great food, both interesting dishes and standard fare.

After a ten year hiatus went back. All the good sandwiches gone! Overpriced and pretentious menu. Bad service. Was there when it opened in the late 60's and it ain't what it used to be when Richard and his partner ran it.

We stopped buy on our way through town. The IPA was very mild/off style. The RYE was OK. They had two on tap. Ceaser salad was good as well as the turkey sandwich. The food is the reason to come hear.

Creative menu with a gourmet touch, but never pretentious. A lot of fun, and service is their top priority!

3 styles of beer, none of which were spectacular. Food was great, chicken nachos and cheese platter. the place was quite nice inside and I got to look around while waiting 10 minutes to be seated, and the place was not busy. They also serve Motor City products from the brewery located across the parking lot.

Beers are competent, and better than the typical generi-brew one gets from the franchised brewpubs. Huge variety of food, most of it quite good. Incredible Mac and (homemade) Cheese. Excellent(!) burger, LOTS of vegetarian and vegan options. Bread and cheese homemade. Good wine selection, with retail prices by the bottle, plus corking fee. And the atmosphere is _really_ cool.

Very intriguing place with a unique approach. The only have a few beers, of indifferent quality, but a really outstanding line of cheeses from their dairy. Go for the atmosphere and the cheese and the beer will taste just fine.

The TJ & Snug have a long history in the area near Detroit's Wayne State University, a "transition neighborhood" for more than 30 years. Originally a campus bar, it eventually became Michigan's first brewpub. On a recent visit we found the atmosphere comfortable and the food very good and reasonably priced. The beer, however, was only adequate, with no outstanding qualities. They all had low carbonation, which is appropriate for some styles but not all. The IPA was not as bitter and did not have as much body as the style would suggest. Still, in a metropolitan area in which almost everything seems to be in the suburbs, this is a nice place for dining and drinking in Detroit itself.

Their Oatmeal Stout and Porter tasted nearly identical. The Scotch ale was not a scotch ale. They only had 5 bears on tap and did not have any thing of quality. Food was OK, service OK. All and all you could find a much better place considering this is Michigans first Brew Pub

Their beer list announced a new Scotch ale. What came was sort of a pale ale--gold color, dominant hopes, very little malt taste at all. The server appeared to know very little about beer and the bartender insisted that this was what Scotch ale was supposed to be. It wasn't bad at all; just not a Scotch ale.

Oatmeal stout and the lager were very good. House-made bread and cheese are outstanding! This place is a must visit along with Motor City Brewing across the street.

The cheese plate went well with the beer. Not enough choices (3). Motor City, across the parking lot, "starts" the beer which is fermented in the same vats and the cheese.

Visited in July. Good food (great ice cream), acceptable service, disappointing beer (and only three of them). Cherry Wheat had barely a hint of cherry flavor, none in the nose. IPA tasted quite bitter but not at all hoppy. Java Porter had a nice coffee finish but a very slight body. Overall, I was distinctly underwhelmed.

More of a restaurant than a brewpub, but one of the best restaurants in the area. Not a lot of beers at any one time, but always very good. Afilliated with the Motor City brewing Works, across the street.

The Java Porter is a very flavorful and full bodied example of a North American porter. The IPA was suitably hoppy, but was a little light for my taste. I didn't try the Cherry Wheat, the only other draft. There was also 3 or 4 bottled brews from Motor City Brewing. The food was very original and good.

It's always great to see such a venerable institution in a struggling neighborhood. Traffic Jam not only makes great beer, but also their own cheeses, breads, and ice cream. Reasonable prices for great food. The beers are really nice, with a great IPA and Java Porter. The only complaint - a mere three beers on tap that are made at Traffic Jam. Liked this place a lot!

This place is unique, home of dairy brewed beer. They are Michigan's first brewpub. They make their own award winning cheeses and ferment the beer in the same open fermenters. Ownership is about to change. New owners should add some vitality to this Michigan landmark.
